THE HISTORY
536-540AD
WESTERN EUROPE
Mercenaries:

THE KINGDOM OF REGET
King Cynfarch Oer
Diplomacy: Hebrides (ea) Shetlands (ea)
King Cynfarch marched into the Highlands. He met an Ui Neill party. The Kings sister, Adwen, was betrothed to a Ui Neill prince. Aengus, they were married with much ceremony and the Ui Neill spent huge amounts of gold on the wedding festival.
THE SCONE REBELLION
While Cynfarch was away north in the highlands his Powysian allies
had offered to help him root out the last of the Druidic heretics in Scone.
However Prince Arthwys had marched the main Powysian forces back south
into Gwynedd. All that remained was the Aengle allies of Powys. The Aengle
jarl did march his 2,000 warriors into Scone. The Reget Garrison commander
assumed these were just the first troops to arrive. After all this wasn’t
even close to enough troops too militarily convert the heretics. The Aengles
started arresting heretics and closing churches. A notice was posted outlawing
the heretical practice. It was long before unrest turned to riots, and
then to open rebellion. Within a few short days scone was in chaos. Street
to street fighting developed and in one of these bloody engagements the
Aengle Jarl was killed. The upset Aengles declared they didn’t come
north to fight for Reget. They left carrying the body of their leader with
them. Powys wasn’t happy to learn that the Anglia lowered its status from
ally to tributary.
It was all the Reget garrison could do to hold the city. The fighting ruined large sections of the city. Only the arrival of the King back in the region stopped the revolt. Reget forces were able to get the city back under control but the Druidic Heretics were not stamped out.
King Cynfarch tried to rule from Albion but his scribes pointed out that as a “centralized” monarchy he needed to be in the Capital to effectively rule.
Prince Llyr Marani took a bride in the Hebrides, rumor claimed she was a fairy woman. Then the Prince traveled to the Shetlands for some more talks.
Lord Dyfnwal left the Shetlands and traveled to Holland were he took command of the Reget garrison.
Young Urien, Cynfarch’s son, took his place as a Prince of the Realm.
THE KINGDOM OF POWYS
King Pwyll
Diplomacy: none
King Pwyll remained in Iona. He attempted to Rule but his aides reminded him that as a “centralized” Monarchy he must rule from the Capital in Caer Swys.
The Queen did give birth to a son in 537 and a daughter in 540 AD
Lord Brugyn sailed north and explored the area’s around the Faearoes...he died while on the journey and his men returned home under their new leader.
The City of Ipswich was built in Anglia.
Prince Arthwys returns to Gwynedd and conducts a census, he passes away from illness in 539AD
Princess Brawstudd, wife of the deceased Perddul and daughter of the
deceased Meirchon Ghul, King of Reget, passed away at the age of 53 in
536 AD
THE KINGDOM OF DUMNONIA
King Gwydre
Diplomacy: none
King Gwydre ruled from Glevum. Prince Magunnus meanwhile landed his armies in the Orkneys and after a short fight pacified the Isles. He then militarily converted the region stamping out the Druidic heresy. A garrison as left and he returned home with his army and fleet.
Lord Derfel, a hero of the Saxon wars, had accompanied Prince Magunnus and returned home as well. He took ill and passed away in 439AD at the age of 71.
Missionaries completed the conversion of London. The city is now completely Catholic
In Spain the Dux of Galatia invaded Portugal. In a bitter and hard fought campaign the Dux was able to triumph and pacify the area. Barely.
Gwydre’s son Tristan was appointed Heir. On a sadder note his younger
son Talisien died of an illness at the age of 26 in 539AD.
THE KINGDOM OF THE UI NEILL
King Connal
Diplomacy: Connaught (f) Mumu (ea)
King Fergus and Prince Aengus traveled to the Highlands. Accompanying them were large number of Irish colonist to settle the region.
Aengus married Adwen, sister of the King of Reget. After much merry
making King Fergus returned to Ulaid. He died there in 539AD
THE CELTIC CHURCH
Patriarch Mungo
Diplomacy: Albion (ab) Anglia (ab) anjou (ab)
Before leaving Caer Swys, Mungo undergoes’ weeks of fasting and prayer to bless a special crown for the kings of Powys to wear, inlaid with special relics of the Celtic saints (including the now dead Columcille) and the apostles of the New Testament.
Mungo preaches a series of sermons encouraging the people of Powys to remain loyal to King Pwyll and the royal line of Powys 'that second House of David, bringer of light to the Saxon darkness.'
Mungo then travels to Iona where he proceeds to rule his ecclesiastical realm, ensuring that the gradual union with Rome shall cause no upset.
Many of the Clergy actively preach that the Church should unite with the Catholics. This causes some unrest and protests but nothing overt as of yet.
In Amorica brother Donngal continues to aid the Armorican King in establishing Abbeys in his realm.
Father Brendan was sent north with some Church vessels to find the Picts and possibly begin converting them...his ships were last seen sailing northwest and were never heard from again.
Brother Aelfric establishes a new religious house in Albion. He preaches
to the heathen there. He tries to preach to the masses and win converts
in Scone, but with the unrest and rebellion in the city he was unable to
do so.
Aelfric is one of a growing number of Saxon monastics, brought into
the fold during the great preaching
Campaign by the Celtic Church following the demise of the old Germanic
kingdom in Britain circa fifteen
years before.
THE KINGDOM OF NORWAY
King Knut
Diplomacy: Oopland (t)
Norway was quiet, King Knut sent diplomats to oopland. He and the rest of his realm then watched with interest as the Danes converted to Catholicism and then trampled much of the Svear kingdom.
Knut’s Queen finally gave him a daughter in 538AD
THE KINGDOM OF THE SVEAR
King Olaf
Diplomacy: none
King Olaf feared an Invasion from Norway so moved most of his army north into Kopparborg. As a result he was unprepared for the Danish invasion from the south. SEE: THE DANISH INVASION
What warriors that weren’t sent north were sent over seas to Livonia SEE: THE DVINA CAMPAIGN
By 540AD the Svear have been pushed out of their Dvina lands and have been reduced to a single region in Scandinavia. King Olaf has some tough decisions to make in the years ahead.
THE KINGDOM OF DENMARK
King Magnulf
Diplomacy: none
And it came to pass at the end of 535AD, King Caenwulf passed from this world. His son, Magnulf Caenson took the throne without interruption in the day to day running of the nation. Early in his rule, there were no great difficulties, until word of the Teutonic Horde uprising in the East. Nestled just North of the Danish lands, this mass of humanity threatened to break up the nation that King Magnulf’s father had struggled to build. Diplomatic messengers were sent to the ClanChief of the Teutons, but had not yet returned.
One morning a court page announced the arrival of the Merovingian ambassador with a priest.
“Tell me, boy,” asked the King, “ why does an Eastern Orthodox priest come with our Roman Catholic friends?”
The page stammered, “ The priest is not from Constantinople, your Majesty.”
The ambassador and the priest from the Holy See in Rome were ushered into the King’s presence. “We need to speak privately, your Majesty,” said the Merovingian ambassador. He leaned close to the King’s ear and whispered for a few moments.
“I shall speak with these men alone,” said the King. The court was cleared, and for several hours hushed voices were heard behind the heavy oaken door, occasionally interrupted by booming protests from King Magnulf. At one point the King’s brothers, Leodi and Frodi, were sent for and joined the discussion. At long last they all emerged. The exact words spoken behind that door were never revealed, but rumors began to be spread in Odinsmunda of a combined attack against the Danish homeland between the Teutons and the Roman Catholics. “The combined might of the Roman Catholic nations that invaded the Visigoths plus the Horde might be too much for the Danish army to withstand!” “There would not be time for Constantinople to respond!” “But we have always been peaceful with our Catholic neighbors. We are practically more Catholic than Orthodox.”
Over the next many days, several messengers were sent to the East, some mysteriously heading Southward through Bavaria. Word soon spread that the horde had agreed to a deal that would save the Danish homeland, at the likely expense of the Danish lands in the East. At long last, King made a speech to his people that would forever change the destiny of Denmark…
“My people, My Danish people. Denmark has always had good relationships with our Roman Catholic neighbors. We share many similar hardships in this part of the world. We have had peace for many years. My father converted to the Eastern Orthodox Church 40 years ago to encourage trade with the Eastern Roman Empire and to allow expansion to the Dvina and Dneiper Rivers. But now the Teutonic Peoples have arisen. They have laid claim to our Eastern Realm. They, like us, are people of the woods and streams. Denmark has extended its reach in a blind ambition to act as a blanket over the Southern Baltic Rim. Now comes the time to pull back the blanket and return the lands to the people. By doing so, we will lose contact with the ERE and the Eastern Orthodox Church. We shall be an island of Eastern Orthodoxy, in a sea of Roman Catholicism. But, my people, our neighbors are more like us than the Orthodox people. We are truly Roman Catholic. The Royal Family of Caenwulf will convert to Roman Catholicism and place Denmark, not in a sea of conflict, but rather a bath of brotherhood.”
With that the order was given. There was no initial response to the announcement by the Roman Church or the Eastern Orthodox Church. Interesting, the ensuing rift with Sweden had less to do with religion, and more to do with King Magnulf’s paranoia. At a feast celebrating the harvest, King Magnulf tasted some cheese imported from Sweden. He thought the cheese was “a bit off”. Believing this an attempt on his life, perhaps an Eastern Orthodox response to his proclamation, he sent messengers to the Teuton ClanChief, and went North to lead his forces into Sweden. What he did not realize was that word had not yet reached any of the Eastern Orthodox nations of the Danish conversion to Roman Catholicism.
THE DANISH INVASION
536AD: King Magnulf gathered up the army in Denmark and ferried across
to Zealand and then into Skane. He then marched north into Halland where
he gathered up the large Danish army already there.
It had taken all the spring and most the summer to move his forces into position. The King still figured he had time to conquer Smaland before the winter snows came however. Crossing into smaland the Danes found the region almost completely undefended. The local militia came out to resist them but the powerful Danish army completely over matched them and the region was soon pacified. Lord Chundi was granted smaland as a fief. Over the winter the King and Baron Chundi discussed the up coming campaign and the Baron raised a feudal levy from amongst the smalanders.
537AD: The King, along with baron Chundi, march north into Uppsala again the region was poorly defended and easily pacified. King magnulf sent Baron Chundi back to his fief. A large garrison was left and then the King began the long march back south,a cross the ferries and into Denmark. Revolts were happening as a result of the news of conversion to Catholicism.
It was the spring of 539AD before the King was back in Denmark and ready
to deal with Rebels. Prince Leodi had been ruling for his older brother
and now filled him in “Well...most of the eastern lands have rebelled,
only Poland and Polotsk have remained loyal. Lord Sven was able to
crush the rebels in Kauyavia but then we had a report that he died from
some ailment. Pomern was looking like they were gonna rebel as well but
our agents were able to snuff out the leaders before they could so that
land remains loyal for now. Even Holstein has revolted.” The King
frowns “ They will obey me” he then leads his armies south. In Holstein
the rebels fight a hard struggle. The struggle was made more intense because
Pagan Saxons had traveled north to help the Holstein rebels. Led by Aesc,
Magnulfs rebel uncle (see Newsfax#3) the Saxons fought hard against the
Danes. Magnulf was able to overcome them and pacify Holstein. The surviving
Saxons returned home. Magnulf doubted he had seen the last of them.
Having taken heavy casualties Magnulf decided to remain in Holstein. The
large garrison he had left in Uppsala meant he didn’t have enough troops
to suppress any more revolts along the Baltic Sea.
THE KINGDOM OF THE LOMBARDS
King Hermann
Diplomacy: Gebal Al Tarik (nt)
The dust had barely settled from the Lombard migration to Iberia; in
fact the wagons weren’t even unpacked yet when King Hermann called his
warriors together once more. The warriors groaned inwardly, bracing themselves
for another long-winded speech. But then they remembered why they followed
Hermann in the first place. Hermann spoke:
“Okay, we cut them in half but they didn’t quite die! So now we must
finish them off...by letting them march east to be somebody else’s problem!
We are allowing the Goths to migrate, under strict conditions, punishable
by death, but if they do what they are supposed to they will leave Iberia
alive.”
The Goths did live up to their agreement and were soon away, Granada and Madiera had been transferred to the Lombards and the Goths had gathered in Aragon then marched away northeast across the Pyrenees and out of the Lombards concern.
The Lombards then settled down to finish the conquest. The Arian populations
in Andalusia, Granada, and Murcia were looted then enslaved. The Goth capital
of Seville was sacked then its people were also enslaved. Lombard tribesman
each evenly colonized the regions. Seville was also colonized.
THE KINGDOM OF ARMORICA
King Geriant
Diplomacy: none
Armorica continued its peaceful policy of conversion through diplomacy. The King helped establish an abbey in Anjou.
Temporary panic ensued when the Goths migrated through Limousin. The
Armoricans had secretly brought that region into the realm. The Armorican
cavalry there skirmished with the Goths, trying to by time hoping for reinforcements.
When it became evident however that the Goths weren’t looking to fight
but simply wanted to travel through the outnumbered Celts let them do so.
THE KINGDOM OF THE MEROVINGIANS

The construction of a fortified city, Gildengard, along the Rhine in
Lorraine took place as well
THE KINGDOM OF BURGUNDY
King Donatein
Diplomacy: none
King Varocher passed away early in 536AD. His son Donatein became King without issue. The people of Nivernais revolted early in his reign, although it seemed to be for some other reason than dynastic succession. The Merovingians quickly courted the rebel region.
The King cuts lose Switzerland and it fell into the realm of the Western
Roman Empire.
THE KINGDOM OF BAVARIA
King Horsa

Bavaria was on the defensive fearing Teutonic hordes no doubt. The Queen
gave birth to 2 sons, in 537Ad and 540AD.
THE KINGDOM OF THE CROATS
King Ptreskov
Diplomacy: Romagna (f) Slovenia (t)
The Croats colonize the region of Lombardy. Breathing room now that the Lombards are in Iberia.

Emperor Alexandros was angry, he was forced to accept a harsh peace, he had no choice. Yet the patriarch of the Orthodox Church was arguing with him constantly to reject the terms and keep fighting. “Priests” Alexandros muttered. In the end he signed the treaty.

Alexandros abided by the treaty. He ceded the lands.
In the west the Empires forces were on alert watching the borders.
There seems to have been a misunderstanding over when the treaty began because the Emperor was not pleased to learn that Coptic missionaries were active in Rhodes. This seemed to be a violation of point #9 of the treaty.
The Emperor’s younger brother Constans died in 537AD.
THE EASTERN ORTHODOX CHURCH
Patriarch Dorian
Diplomacy: none
Patriarch Dorian wasn’t happy. He had argued with the Emperor to continue the fight...but...he hadn’t been able to persuade him.
Then word came from the North that the Danes had rejected the Orthodox
Church and attacked the Orthodox Svear. The missionaries sent north into
the eastern Dane lands were unable to win converts in such a chaotic atmosphere.
Some were even martyred.
THE ORDER OF ST GEORGIOS
Grand Master Leonidas
Diplomacy: Kyklades (ch) Bithnia (ch)
Leonidas ordered churches founded in the Kyklades and Bithnia. Some
troops were also raised to help defend the Western lands of the Empire.

THE KINGDOM OF GREATER ARMENIA
King Vahan
Diplomacy: Pontus (f)
Finally peace Vahan thought. His family returned home, but what a price to pay...ceding Armenia to the Persians?
Vahan sent diplomats to Pontus. A new Capital would be needed. The diplomats
in Abasigia were unable to convince the Orthodox folks in Abasigia to raise
their status for a Monophysite monarch.
THE HORDES OF TEUTONIC TRIBES
Chief Wulfhere
Diplomacy: none
The tribes of the Teutons gather in Prussia. Their combined council
meets to decide the fate of the tribes.
Wulfhere, ClanChief of the tribes addresses the council:
"For years they have come, tilled our land, chopped our trees.
More and more they come. We try to share but it is getting hard.
Our peoples have lately become unhappy with the ever-encroaching stink
of civilization. Now we find that we are fully encircled by these
effete land-wasters. They have even built their smelly cites right
next to us! It has become intolerable! Our people are yelling
for action. Ah, but just what sort of action? That is the question.
We must act soon as the people are getting restless."
"Obviously, the more we understand the world around us, the wiser our
decision will be. I have shown you the power of this art called writing.
It is useful for sending messages across distances. Others have noticed
us. It is interesting how suddenly the masters of civilization have
decided to talk to us. We have heard from far away lands and far
away people, like the Roman Pope and the Emperor of the East Romans.
They all seem worried now that they see how many and fierce we are."
"Many have said, 'We should take back our lands, our peace, our quiet,
we should use our strong arms and sharp spears to do this.' I am
not fond of this plan. It makes of the bearers of chaos, instead
of the champions of order. Some have called for an attack on the
Danes. But while we argue, we argue like brothers. I think
we find can some common ground. We have offers to travel dry deserts
and wide steppes to fight for someone else's gain. We have offers
to settle in lands that no one would want. We should do none of these
things. We should find a home where we can grow and start our own
nation. Let us write to our neighbors and see what can be arranged."
And so it was.
---------
Later, Wulfhere calls another council.
"We have signed a peace treaty with Denmark and the Svear. They
will give us the land we want and become our partners in holding down this
corner of the world. We will get help developing our own civilization.
We can become the protectors of order, and the saviors of civilization."
"And how are we going to do that?" sneers the eldest of the tribal
wise women. "And what will happen when the next horde rises up?"
"I have a plan," Wulfhere replies. And he told the council his
plan. All the members were uncharacteristically quiet as they thought
about what he said.
“Won’t those churchmen object?”, asked the crone.
“Bah, even they will see that it is the only workable solution – even
if they are too weak-willed to do it themselves. Besides – we’ll
be heroes!” The approval of this sentiment was thunderous.
--------
The Teutons are all assembled, ready to take up their quest to save
civilization. A messenger arrives out of breath, urgently wanting
to talk with Wulfhere. “The Svear have repudiated the treaty", he
pants. "They are at war with the Danes.”
"So who do we side with?" young Frothgar asks the ClanChief, his father.
“Are you kidding? Who do we have the closest kinship to?
Who gave us land? Who would still be our neighbor even if they lost
the war? We fight for Denmark!”
"But father, we took weeks making very meticulous plans, and this was
in a land of peace. Don’t we need more time to plan a war?"
"Yes, son, but we don’t have it. Go, now, and tell the other
Clans. This fight might not be as noble, but there is a cause, and
benefits, and, of course, loot.”
THE DVINA CAMPAIGN
536AD: Wulfhere leads his tribe south, as they cross into Mausauria
the Polish tribes in the area confront them. After some discussion the
Poles grant the Teutons free passage through their lands. The Teutons then
turn east and by July enter the lands of the Kuran. This smaller tribal
group agrees to ally with the Teutons. Their combined Tribes now cross
the Dvina and attack into Livonia. Quickly pacifying the poorly defended
region they then wait out the winter as snow begins to come.
537AD: In the spring the small city of Holmgard is stormed and taken. Large garrisons are left in the region and city as the Tribes continue their march northeast. These lands encompassing Novgorod, Kalinin and muscovy are the lands of the Slavic Est’s. This large tribal group allies with the Teutons as well. Chieftain Wulfhere marries a Est wife (she gives birth to a daughter in 539AD).
The Est and Kuran are sent back to Livonia. There they loot the region and begin enslaving the people. In July Prince Asulf of the Svear entered Livonia to try and liberate his people. His small 3,500 man army was overwhelmed and the prince killed. A mere month later Lord Ragnar arrived from Smolensk and his 3,000 warriors met the same fate.
The Teutonic tribes continue south and winter just east of Smolensk.
538AD: Smolensk is over run in the spring, the region is looted then enslaved.
The Est and Kuran sack and enslave Holmgardr then march into Rhzev and pacify it.
539-540AD: The Teutons march north herding there many slaves.
The Est and Kuarans Loot and enslave Rzhev and do the same. The end
of 540AD again unites all the tribes in Livonia.
THE KINGDOM OF THE GOTHS
King Dameric
Diplomacy: none
Dameric was able to broker a deal with the Catholic forces that would allow his people to continue to exist. He had to leave Western Europe however.
So abiding by the treaty his Goths gathered in Aragon and then began the long march away. Things went fine until they reached Limousin. There they encountered, to their suprise, forces of Armorica. The Armoricans had obviously been here awhile as well, field forts existed and everything. Small skirmishes between the two sides occurred. The Armorican cavalry was outnumbered and the Goths wanted to simply get past so the skirmishes were light and eventually the Goths slipped away. They were met at the border of the Frankish realm by escorts and were guided through Frankish territory without incident. As they traveled through Thuringia and Meissen groups of Saxons began joining them. These refugees had been trying to flee the fighting between the Pagan/Orthodox alliance against the Catholic Loyalist Danes. Small groups joined them all the way east where they stopped to re group in Turov.
Dameric obviously will have to weigh heavily what course next to take
since the Teutons have been ravaging the Dvina River area.
NORTH AFRICA
Mercenaries:

THE KINGDOM OF EGYPT
King Aetius
Diplomacy: Jordan (ea) Crete (ea)
Aetius was delighted with the treaty. He had to do very little actual fighting but received some nice lands out of the deal.
He was concerned it might be a ruse, remember those abadonese muslims, so he sent garrisons north into the new lands and remained on alert with the bulk of his forces.
Reports out of Mansura talk of Islamic missionaries converting a small portion of the population to Islam.
THE MONOPHYSITE CHURCH

THE KINGDOM OF THE VANDALS
King Octa
Diplomacy: Zirid (t) Cheliff (a)
While ordering the port city of Skikda built in Kabilya, the King also ordered the Isle of Corsica cut loose from the Kingdom as well. Sacrifices must be made it seems.
The Vandals were also the beneficiary of the Goth trade fleet that sailed
into Carthage and asked to serve King Octa.
THE ARIAN CHURCH
Patriarch Taborus
Diplomacy: Skikda (ab) Sicily (mn)
The Arian leadership listening to its fellow priests began the process of reform. A stronger Church was the end result as the minority groups feeling they were listened to felt more a part of the Church than ever.
Taborus also sent a messenger of to the King of Egypt declaring that
Egypt owed the Arian Church compensation for having to bury all those dead
Syrian Muslims. Taborus recommends Egypt pay a 2% Tithe to the Arian Church
until such time as Taborus feels the costs have been recouped.
