Yuang Xi (M???) |
United States of Asia (Yamato) Onihiko,
First Minister of the Diet
Diplomacy:
Manilla (hs), Koguryo (a)
Speaker Onan focused Japan's efforts on economics. Hagugori, Besuboru, Heian, and Hejudo expanded. Dozens of new avenues, sidewalks, and marketplaces were added to Kumamoto and Edo. And scores of new transports were added to internal trade.
Admiral Akira (the one who has so many successful explorations that he lost track) and the Lord of Okinawa set forth on an ambitious exploration of the sea around the Kamchatka Peninsula. But in the winter of '72-'73, a horrible ice storm raged across the northern Pacific. The entire fleet was lost. Okinawa rebelled.
To make matters worse, Admiral Hamaguchi and Lord Cheju'do disappeared near Mindanao, never to be seen again. Cheju'do degraded to economic allied. And the other explorer, Admiral Jumanji, failed to find anything southwest of the Marianas.
Diplomatic results were mixed. Hitachi ticked off Manilla, but Toyota wrangled a full alliance in Koguryo.
Jumanji Onan lost the election to Onihiko.
The Kin Horde Ogadai,
Khan of Kin
Diplomacy: Tumet
Horde (a)
Khan Takhat moved south to help the Mongols deal with the upstart Chinese. Before they got there, Takhat and his Sungari ally died. The ally was replaced, and Takhat's son Ogadai became the Khan of Kin. He picked up the Tumet Horde on the way south.
It took until September of 1072 before the Kin arrived in unsuspecting Yun. Over the course of the next three years, they looted and pillaged their way through Yun, Bao Ding, Yen, Shangtung, and Tsainan. Ogadai shared the proceeds with his men. The cities were left alone to save time. Significant numbers of leaderless field fortifications were swept aside by the several dozen thousand nomads. Fortunately for the Kin Horde, Lu'an leaders were otherwise engaged...
The Lu'an Chinese Kingdom
Soon Ho Lee, Supreme Monarch of Lu'an
Diplomacy: Spoiled by the Mongols.
Satisfied that the Mongols would stay away, Soon Ho Lee ordered new citizens to Pienching, Kaifeng, and Yen-Ching. A modest number of new castles and forts were added to the southeastern regions. Soon declared that everyone would mourn the passing of H.U. Lee for five years. Services were held in Songahm Temple.
Then Soon and M.K. Lee grabbed the army and headed off to Kansu to talk politics. He had only been in Kansu for three months when the clouds were first sighted. Dust clouds from the west. The Mongols had returned to China. The fifty-odd thousand Mongols swarmed over the mountains and set upon Soon and his army of not even twenty thousand. In the open fields of Kansu, the Lu'an infantry and sappers were decimated by the Mongol horse. Soon withdrew his remnants to Shensi.
Winter of '71-'72 stopped the fighting. But in the spring, the Mongols were on the move before Lu'an could brush the snow from their tents. Batu showed up in Shensi May 1072, while Soon was still trying to regroup his army. The Lu'an army was completely crushed. M.K. Lee became a Mongol prisoner, and Soon Ho Lee fled east in search of defensible terrain. Batu's Shan Khan ally died in the battle, and was replaced.
The crushing defeat put Lu'an into a panic. Shensi, Shentung (& Chengtu), and Hsuing Nu (& Kalgan) rebelled. The Mongol Horde marched on...
The Mongol Horde Batu,
Kucha Khan
Diplomacy: None
After the victory in Shensi, Batu took the time to gloat a little and explain his motives.
"This Talmasp War is being waged in memory of our venerable lieutenant and aide Talmasp, whose life was cut short by Chinese treachery. We must teach them a lesson!"
The Mongols had no trouble looting Shentung and sacking Chengtu. Honan was more of a problem. Well, not Honan, exactly, for the very rich region was looted with ease. Pienching posed the problem. The huge city was defended only with walls and supporting militia, but the Mongols are entirely unskilled in the art of siege warfare. It would cost them dearly. It took four all-out assaults on the city before the Mongol numbers prevailed. In the meantime, both Batu and his first son Negas had perished in the melee. Batu's second son Wolf had to take up the cause.
By the time Wolf got done regrouping the horde and sacking Pienching, it was already July of 1074. Hopei and Kaifeng were next on the list, so the Mongols commandeered some boats and barges to cross the Huang Ho. Like Honan, the rich region of Hopei was sacked with glee. Kaifeng posed a challenge. Wolf led the Mongols against the walls for no less than five months before he was forced to retreat in disgust to Honan. The year 1075 was drawing to a close.
Reduced to a few dozen thousand horsemen, the Mongols camped out in Honan and counted their large pile of gold.
The Chin Kingdom Che
II, Divine Overlord of the Middle-Kingdom, Lord of the River, Son of
Heaven
Diplomacy: Tangchou
(ne), Kienchou (f)
Che II wanted to improve trade with his brothers in the north. So he ordered a royal road built from Nanking through Taichou, and north to the Grand Canal. Unfortunately, the Kin Horde ruined the road that Lu'an was working on. Che III ruled in the capital (YAWN), scattering a few public works and beefing up his large cavalry forces.
Che II and Prince Che Ho talked to Tangchou, trying to regain their complete allegiance. They figured Tangchou would love Ch'in again if they married Min Li off to the region. But it was not to be. The stars just didn't line up right this time.
Bacphan Zhuangzu Fei-Tzu
Yensung, Overlord of South China
Diplomacy: None
Fei-Tzu Yensung ruled from Tonkin. He nearly tripled the cavalry corps, in case any hordes (nomadic or otherwise) showed up. Over a hundred new transports put to sea, to support the internal trade routes.
The
Celestial Kingdom of the Jade Buddha Po
Po, 6th Incarnation of the Blessed Jade Buddha, Light on the Path to
Nirvana, Illuminator of the Human Soul, Thinker of Deep Thoughts,
Mayor Shangri-La
Diplomacy:
Kwangsi (ch), Kwangtung (ch), Nanling (ne), Tz'uk'an (mn),
Gouangxi (mn), Kweichou (mn)
Po Po sent his lieutenants Sing Sang and Sing Song II out to strengthen the control web.
Po Po again sent his minions forth to integrate Hinduism with Buddhism. This time, the efforts fell on deaf ears.

The Glorious Katoomba Imperium Aran,
Chief Hee Nalu-sen
Diplomacy: Toowomba (f)
Ayr (ne)
Chief Aran sent more settlers to the region of Murrumi. He then concentrated on wooing Toowomba. He was so overjoyed at the recent progress of negotiations that he offered his only daughter, Arya, in marriage to his Toowomban ally if only they would fully join Katoomba. Lord Toowomba decided that becoming a prince of Katoomba would be cool.
Boran (the heir) ruled from Saibai. The new lieutenant, Eoman, helped administer, and was presented with a lovely wall hanging made of woven eucalyptus branches.
Doran just couldn't get his point across in Ayr.
The Molucca Seahold K477,
Arikara of the Molucca Te Anu
Diplomacy:
Seasayap (t)
Oriental agents were discovered attempting to infiltrate the espionage services. They were fed alive to the sharks.
K477 released the region of Dolak from the Seahold. He also sent new citizens into the city of Seasayap.
The Javan Federation Yono,
President Sirivjavan
Diplomacy:
Johor (fa), Angor (t)
Yodhi lost the election to Yono. Yono sent new citizens into Kadaram. Forest-clearing continued in Utara. New sewers and baths made Sirivjaya a cleaner city.
Missionary work in Johor was arduous. Happily, Ginshinkon was able to get a military alliance from them. Jankraya finally noticed that the city of Angor was uncontrolled. His visit there was a smashing success.
The
United Monarchy of Burma His
Majesty the King Tran Vinh, Monarch of all Burmese People
Diplomacy:
Lampang (fa)
Tran Vinh ordered major public improvements in Ava. The region got new irrigation canals and other agricultural enhancements. Then the Monarch himself traveled to Lampang (while Pram Vinh ruled from Pagan), to woo the region. With Kri Vek's help, the region agreed to a military alliance.
Tri Koo and Shu Kan made moderate progress converting the Hindus of Arakan.

Palankala Daldrum,
Guardian of the Ganges, Divine Wrath of Kali
Diplomacy:
None
Daldrum took another five year vacation. The Kutai wouldn't bother to plow through the powerful Xanthi Xanadu just to get at his unassuming nation, right?
Then reality reared its ugly head. In November of 1071, the Kutai did indeed come crashing into Maghada, just in time to winter in the region. There were a small handful of field forts in the region, but no more than a speed bump. The Kutai began what could only be described as a systematic looting of Palankala. Maghada, Nadavaria, and Kalinga succumbed by the end of April 1073. By the end of September, the horde was crossing the Ganges from Nadavaria into Palas itself. Here, they finally found the Palan army, who had been sitting around, hoping that the Kutai would not come.
The Palans had several thousand mixed cavalry, 20,000 mixed infantry, and dozens of field fortifications. The Kutai still had several dozen thousand horsemen to rampage across the open fields of Palas. Unlike the Xanthi, Palankala enjoyed two good commanders, Dhala and L931, who hoped to make up for being badly outnumbered. They used castles to guard their flanks when the horde swarmed forward. Zoltan II was unable to find a weak point. Wave after wave of fearless cavalry charges shattered against spear, pike, and heavy lance. Zoltan had to withdraw in disgust. Also, his Betpak Khan died in the fighting, and the Betpak melted away, disillusioned.
Back in Nadavaria, Zoltan II decided to seek the path of least resistance. The Kutai looted their way through Gaur, Assam, and Samatata, finally ending up in the forests of Gtsang by November of 1075.
The Kutai Horde Zoltan
II, Kutai Khan
Diplomacy: None
Zoltan II cut a path through Xanadu, then Palankala.
The Chola Mandalam Hamralipti,
Regent for Nareem, Mandala Chola
Diplomacy: Chela
(f)
King Kakatiya ordered the expansions of Banavasi, Kollam, Tanjore, Madros, and Polonarva. In Madurai, news canals and farms increased the agricultural output. A great deal of gold was shipped away to somewhere.
Kakatiya was overjoyed to be the father of another girl and three more boys. But then, in August 1075, he died. Since Nareem is not of age, Hamralipti is acting as regent. Hamralipti's is a poor administrator. Kakatiya rebelled. The other landlocked regions stayed in the empire (for now).
The ally from Chela married Nareem's sister, bringing the region fully into the Mandalam.
Xanthi Empire of Xanadu Palpatyn
VII, Grand Poobah of the Xanthi Zieterund, Rajah of the Rajputs
Diplomacy: Surashtra (ne), Sahis (fa)
To defend against the Kutai invasion, Palpatyn VII needed gold. Lots of gold. So he called for a five-year "emergency defense tax". Luckily, economic depression did not occur. Xanadu raised an additional 20,000 mixed heavy and medium cavalry. In addition, Palpatyn was able to hire all 30,000 of the mercenary cavalry, infantry, and sappers.
Palpatyn VII saw the realization of his worst fears when the Kutai immediately moved on Xanadu. They arrived early in May 1071 to find a large Xanthi army supported by dozens upon dozens of castles and forts. In a case of appallingly bad timing, Ramesevka (the only decent Xanthi commander) died of the flu. This left only Palpatyn VII and Princess Delia, both of them militarily inept, to lead the defense of Xanadu. Xanadu espionage actions were unsuccessful, including the assassinations attempts on Zoltan II.
Things were still not looking all that bad for the former Champans, however. They still had a superior force, because of all their fortifications and heavy cavalry. The excellent troop quality of the Kutai and their far superior commanders counterbalanced the Xanthi forts and armor. The two armies were almost evenly matched. But May 1071 turned out to be one of those times when the Fates choose a victor. Zoltan II had a wonderful time encircling and outflanking the slow, poorly led Xanthi infantry and heavy cavalry. Kutai horse archers felled many Xanthi spearmen before they even got to the line of battle. Palpatyn VII led a somewhat successful but completely uninspired defense. The Kutai didn't suffer nearly as many casualties as the Indians. In a stunning defeat, Palpatyn VII had to retreat behind the high walls of Xanth. Zoltan II chased down nearly half of the stragglers before they reached the mighty city.
Palpatyn VII fretted about the what would come next. Would the Kutai storm the city walls? Maybe they would try to starve him out; he had no agro reserve. Ah, but the Kutai had no warships to block resupply by river...
As it turned out, there was no need to worry. Zoltan II looked to the east, to Palankala. He dazzled his horde with tales of rich peasants and small armies. And so the Kutai moved east, through Jaunpur (without looting Xanadu regions), and into Maghada.
So Palpatyn VII ventured out to gather up the lost and runaways from his army, and retake control of his regions. Xanadu itself was heavily damaged by the large battle. Since Princess Delia died in 1075, and Palpatyn didn't have a son yet, he named his younger brother Arin as a Prince.
Sultanate of Sind Shah
Zahim, Mansurashah, Protector of the Indus, Barrier of Allah
Diplomacy: None
Sultan Zahim awoke with a start from a dream. His
sleep had been fitful at best in recent weeks, due to a nagging sense
of doubt. "Is the path I have chosen for our people truly the
path of Allah?" he wondered. In this dream, he was sure, were
the answers to his questions. Without a word to his advisors or
court, the Sultan set off to visit a holy man who was rumored to live
the life of a hermit in the mountains of Ghazni.
The trek was
arduous, and fraught with danger. Still, Zahim persevered. At long
last, he reached the mountaintop on which the holy man was reputed to
live. "Oh, great seer!" the Sultan cried, "A humble
servant of Allah has come in search of wisdom!"
"If your
motives are pure, then enter the cave of souls, where a true servant
of God may hear the voice of Muhammed," came the reply.
Three
weeks passed before Zahim emerged from the cave of souls. His heart
swelled with awe at the glory of Allah. The words that were revealed
to him would guide his actions forever, he vowed. "All children
of Islam are as sheep to a flock." The power and simplicity of
these words could move mountains, thought the Sultan.
Barely able
to contain the joy welling up within him, the Sultan began the long
journey home. Gone were the unnatural images of sheep which had
tortured his sleep for so many nights. Ahead, the was sure, was a
bright new age for Muslims everywhere.
The Sultan awoke in his
chambers. A divine vision is a rare gift, he realized, and the will
of Allah cannot be denied.
Zahim gave General General Ramin a few thousand cavalry and sent him to Sahis. Rahim attempted to force tribute from the region, while Minister Nasser preached Islam. Sahis fielded their 2600 cavalry and foiled the attack. Rahim and Nasser had to retreat to Sukkur.

Diplomacy:
Bulgaria (nt), Rhodes (ea), Cyprus (ne)
King Marcus ruled, and sent two of his leaders forth to expand the empire. Lord Arelius made a bad impression in Bulgaria, and the region reneged on their feudal alliance. But he did smooth things over a little bit in Serbia.
In Rhodes, Prince Theodore was a smashing success. But upon his arrival in Cyprus, he was told in no uncertain terms by the Fatimid garrison commander that the island was under new management. Theodore had been suspecting something like this after seeing the swarm of Egyptian warships parading through the Aegean.
The region of Constantinople forgave the Byzantines for conquering them, and became a willing Tributary. But the city of Constantinople remains Pacified.
Kingdom of Russia
Ivan II, the Wanderer, King of
Russia
Diplomacy: Veposkava (f)
In the spring of 1072, gold was discovered in Livonia. A flood of settlers, merchants, and workers moved into nearby Dorogobuzh to seek opportunity.
By disbanding some troops, Ivan II managed to scrape together enough for a port city in Veposkava. Could he call it something nice and easy, like Ivangrad? Nooooo, he had to call it Kuz'movka.

The Sonoma Kingdom Winter
Eagle, King of Sonoma
Diplomacy: None
The summer of '73 brought monsoon season, and unusually heavy downpours in Salinan washed away some agricultural projects. Winter Eagle placed a couple dozen transports on the new trade route with Aztec.
The Aztec Empire
Tepid Lizard, God-Emperor, Divine Ruler of Mexico
Diplomacy:
Achi (f), Yucatec (ne)
Tepid Lizard spent his time ruling the empire, and becoming a proud papa, four times.
Tula and Acapulco got new citizens. A new port city, Quetzal, was constructed in Cuyutec. This permitted trade with Sonoma. Unfortunately, since the Aztec's trade range is only 2, they can't allocate any MSP to the new trade route. Then, to the horror of both Tepid Lizard and Pachamac, the GM noticed that the Incan trade range is only 2 as well. So the trade route between those two nations was closed. This upset Tepid Lizard greatly. He ordered an extra 100 virgins sacrificed to appease the gods, to no avail. perhaps he should acquire the region of Huave, and build a port city in Achi on the Golfo de Nicoya.
The Andean Incan Empire
Pachamac, Emperor of the Heavens
Diplomacy:
None
Pachamac once again embarked upon many grand projects. Valdivia and Iquito were cleared for agriculture. Iquito was colonized to 2 GPv. Massive productivity enhancements were constructed in Iquito and Valdivia. The Galapagos were settled to 1 GPv. Settlers formed a port city there, called Cusi. And the royal road was extended from Aguano to Quispe.
Quiro Mapuche Amrokno,
the Chosen
Diplomacy: None
Amrokno ordered workers to continue clearing the land in Oic. The work is not done yet, but the end is in sight. Meanwhile, he ruled over Mapuche and spent time with his wife. They added two boys and a girl to their family.
Admiral Duh-Ha sailed south from Quiroci to explore. He mapped out the Magellan Passage, but was unable to do the same in Cape Horn. But he did find that the Magellan Passage (or should it be called the Duh-Ha Passage?) connects to the Falkland Sea. So he sailed up the eastern coast to Kniso. Duh-Ha became the first man in history to sail from one coast of the Americas to the other. In Kniso, he received a hero's welcome. Sadly, Duh-Ha died soon after his triumphant arrival. Amrokno dedicated a marble statue of Duh-Ha in the center of Kniso's town square.
