United States of Asia (Yamato) Onan, First Minister of the Diet
Diplomacy: Akita (f), Leyte (ne)
Urbanization increased in Hagugori, Besuboru, Heian, and Hejudo. A vast flood of gold poured into Koguryo, improving the region's dikes, canals, and cartpaths. Over 100 new heavy transports took to the water to augment the nation's internal trade. Despite all this, Onabi lost the election and was replaced by the likeable and folksy Speaker Onan.
Admiral Jumanji failed in his attempt to explore the route to Palau. But no one was surprised when the infallible explorer Admiral Akira returned from the north with a complete map of the Cape Lopatka sea zone. Other explorations occurred, successfully in the Molucca Sea and Gulf of Tonkin, unsuccessfully in the Sulu Sea.
The Kin Horde Takhat, Khan of Kin
Diplomacy: Sungari Horde (a)
Khan Takhat covered a vast stretch of ground, sweeping east into Manchuria and picking up the Sungari, then north and west, past Lake Baykal, and ended up in Yenisey. Most of the regional khans he met agreed to let him pass, but didn't join him.
The Lu'an Chinese Kingdom Soon Ho Lee, Supreme Monarch of Lu'an
Diplomacy: Shentung (ne), Yun (ea)
Continuing the gradual economic expansion, the Lu'an Kingdom extended the royal road from Yen-Ching to Kaifeng. The sacked city of Chengtu was rebuilt. Tsing'dao, Pienching, and Kaifeng grew larger.
H.U. Lee of the Lu'an Kingdom and Khan Batu of the Mongol Horde exchanged letters.
Khan Batu,
It is with distress
that I hear of the looting of former Shensi lands by you and your
troops. The Shensi were conquered by the Lu'an. We intend to expand
our kingdom into former Shensi lands, as I'm sure you are well
aware. Kindly refrain from further looting of Chinese regions and
cities. If you do so, we will pay you a reward of 30 chests of
silver.
Sincerely,
H. U. Lee of the Lu'an Kingdom
H.U. Lee,
Were it not for my own actions, you would
still be fighting the Shensi today. I will take whatever I please
from these lands. You are welcome to take these regions after I am
done with them. Be grateful that your own economy is
undisturbed.
Sincerely,
Khan Batu of the Mongols
Khan Batu,
Perhaps you misunderstood my request. The
Shensi are gone because of my actions, not yours. I want you to
leave China now.
H. U. Lee
H. U. Lee,
No, I think it is you who misunderstand.
I will stay as long as I please. I will go where I want and when I
want. I advise you not to interfere.
Khan Batu
Since Batu sounded ornery, H. U. Lee laid plans. He assigned appropriate missions to his leaders and espionage service. Then Emperor H.U. Lee and M.K. Lee both headed for Yun to woo the region. In a freak accident, young H.U. Lee was killed by falling off his horse. Soon Ho Lee became emperor.
The Mongols did indeed get ornery. They began looting their way through the former Shensi regions, depleting Shan'si, Huang, Shensi, Kansu, and Yanzhi. As they rampaged, Lu'an agents attempted several actions against them. Most failed, including the attempt to capture Batu. But the one attack that did hit home was painful: Someone assassinated Mongol lieutenant Talmasp and destroyed all his records, eliminating the small Mongol bureaucratic unit.
M.K. Lee had an easy time talking to Yun. C.Y. Sen should have been successful in Shentung, but he accidentally threw up on the local warlord's dinner plate. C.Y. Sen didn't recover from his illness.
The Mongol Horde Batu, Kucha Khan
Diplomacy: Tangut Khan (a)
Batu wasn't happy about the disrespect he was receiving from the east. He thought about teaching them a lesson, but decided to wait and see if the Lu'an attacked him while he looted the former Shensi lands. Neither side wanted to be the one to fire the first arrow. So war was narrowly averted.
After filling their bags again with what little gold remained, the Mongols headed west and north, to the open steppe. Suzhou and Yumen were pretty sparsely occupied. In Tangut, Batu discovered that his big, bad horde isn't as big and bad as he thought. The Tangut Khan laughed at him and attacked. Batu's brilliant son Negas only needed a little help from Lady Luck to defeat the Tangut. Afterwards, they joined up as an allied horde.
Next the Mongols visited the Gaxun-Nur, who agreed to non-paying tribute. Disappointed, Batu moved southwest across the silk road, ending up in Tsinghai with a couple more non-paying tributaries, but no more allies.
The Chin Kingdom Che II, Divine Overlord of the Middle-Kingdom, Lord of the River, Son of Heaven
Diplomacy: Tangchou (ea), Kiang'si (h), Kienchou (a), Chinling (f)
Che II increased the sizes of Amoy, Mukden, and Chunking. Tremendous new agricultural improvements have been added to Kweichou, Jiang'xi, and Taiping. Che II remained in Tangchou. The torturous negotiations began to wear him down, although the region agreed to increase tribute.
The forest dwellers of Kiang'si drove Li Pao away with sharp, pointy things. Tsu Lah did better in Kienchou. And despite his crude manners, Prince Che Ho found Chinling to be any easy sell.
Bacphan Zhuangzu Fei-Tzu Yensung, Overlord of South China
Diplomacy: None
Fei-Tzu Yensung didn't feel like doing anything.
The Celestial Kingdom of the Jade Buddha Po Po, 6th Incarnation of the Blessed Jade Buddha, Light on the Path to Nirvana, Illuminator of the Human Soul, Thinker of Deep Thoughts, Mayor Shangri-La
Diplomacy: Tz'uk'an (ab), Lingsi (ab), Lingtung (ab), Salween (ch), Om'chu (ch), Gouangxi (ne)
Po Po looked over all the men sitting idle in Lhasa. Obviously, they needed something to do. So he declared an enormous postal road be constructed, from Lhasa, through Salween, Tz'uk'an, and Nan Chao, into Gouangxi. The Zhuangzu were pleased; their administrators would have an easier time reaching Nan Chao now.
With a kindler, gentler approach, Buddhist emissaries discussed religious integration with their Hindu counterparts. This time, they were a little better received. Hinduism is becoming more tolerant of Buddhism.

Hanoori (M???) |
The Katoomba Riders Aran, Chief Hee Nalu-sen
Diplomacy: Toowomba (a), Ayr (ne)
Hungry for new lands, Chief Aran dispatched colonists to Murrumi to settle the region up to (0/2). He remained in Toowomba, gradually convincing them to deepen their relationship with Katoomba. Doran just didn't click with the Ayr wilderness.
The Molucca Seahold K477, Arikara of the Molucca Te Anu
Diplomacy: None
K477 meditated for five years, listening to the rhythm of the waves upon the shore.
The Javan Federation Yodhi, President Sirivjavan
Diplomacy: Aceh (h)
Yaraja lost the election to Yodhi. Yodhi sent new citizens into Kadaram and Tarai. Laborers slowly began clearing the forests from Utara.
Minister Jarakoni had the distinction of converting the remaining pagans in Utara to Buddhism. Ginshinkon went to Aceh to woo the locals. They hacked him to bits and fed him to the sharks.
The United Monarchy of Burma His Majesty the King Tran Vinh, Monarch of all Burmese People
Diplomacy: Tz'uk'an (aw)
Word had been received. Palankala was preparing to attack! Tran Vinh called for the royal maps, hoping the messenger was wrong. As his leaders and generals answered his call, the Monarch began to plan Ava's defense. The orders went out, and the armory was emptied to equip Burma's forces. Tran Vinh declared a mass conscription of boys and old men to swell the Burmese army threefold.
As the pages buckled on his armor, the Monarch and his generals considered possible axes of advance for the Palans. Which way would they come?
Privately Pram Vinh (the heir) would ask: would they come at all?
In a bid to establish a land route to China, Van Kei visited Tz'uk'an. He made the mistake of referring to Tz'uk'an as a backwards, stone-age region. They threw him off a cliff.

Palankala Daldrum, Guardian of the Ganges, Divine Wrath of Kali
Diplomacy: None
Satisfied that he had the situation under control, Daldrum stayed in bed. A lucky accident exposed some infiltrators from Lhasa in the ranks of the military.
The Chola Mandalam Kakatiya, Mandala Chola
Diplomacy: Chela (a)
King Kakatiya ordered the expansions of Banavasi, Kollam, Tanjore, and Madros. He also built new transports for the inter-city trade routes. And in Seylan, news canals and farms increased the agricultural output.
Kakatiya wanted more heirs, but his two sons are far outnumbered by his daughters.
Hamralipti discussed alliances with Chela. He wanted to marry the leader's daughter and have children, but only Kings and Heirs can do those things.
Xanthi Empire of Xanadu Palpatyn VII, Grand Poobah of the Xanthi Zieterund, Rajah of the Rajputs
Diplomacy: Surashtra (c), Sahis (ne)
Blissfully unaware of Zoltan II, the Grand Poobah ordered the expansions of Kyoko, Reichan, Limu, Beth (around a new fortress), and Lyssa (around a new fortress).
Pasan and Darth couldn't sway the Surashtrans very far towards Xanadu. Princess Delia had bad luck in Sahis, and the rampaging nomads didn't help matters.
In 1070, Palpatyn VI and Ramesevka heard of the Kutai rampaging their way from Und toward Xanadu. They gathered up their large army and moved to meet the threat...
Sultanate of Sind Shah Zahim, Mansurashah, Protector of the Indus, Barrier of Allah
Diplomacy: None
Zahim built more field fortifications just to be on the safe side.
The Kutai Horde Zoltan II, Kutai Khan
Diplomacy: Who needs it?
Zoltan II gathered his khans about him. "It is time to move on India. The farmers there have grow fat, dumb, and happy. They shall now feel our power!" So he rode east and then south, crossing over the Tien Shan, two depopulated regions, and the Hindu Kush / Karakoram Range. His horsemen didn't do too well at 10,000 feet altitude and above. They got cold and hungry. Some deserted. Some starved. But there were still plenty left to set upon Und.
Apparently Zoltan II vastly underestimated the time required to traverse regions that are uncontrolled, depopulated, and mountain-bordered, for it was already April of 1069 by the time his horde finally burst into Und from over the high northern mountains. They had no trouble slapping the region's militia aside and looting the region. Punjab was next on the menu, receiving exactly the same treatment, although it had more forts than Und. The Kutai next looted Sahis with ease.
In July of 1070, the Kutai arrived in Tarain to find a much larger welcoming party than they had ever experienced before. A small collection of fortifications was supported by 20,000 mixed cavalry and 60-80,000 infantry, and they had even had time to dig in a bit. Zoltan II was unconcerned. Even after the torturous journey he put them through, his force was approaching 150,000 medium and light horsemen. The Kutai pressed the attack. Neither side could come up with any surprises. The Kutai numbers carried the day. Worse yet, an arrow wound to Palpatyn VI's gut caused a fatal infection. Short nearly ¼ of his army, Ramesevka had to withdraw to Uttar Pradesh. Just for fun, the Kutai ripped up the royal road that the Xanaduians were working on.
The Kutai didn't stop to loot this time. In October of 1070, they barged into Uttar Pradesh. There they found Ramesevka hiding behind another small collection of field forts. Again the Kutai attacked. In a stroke of bad luck, both the Naiman Khan and the Kama Bolgar Khan lost their lives while bravely leading their men against those pesky forts. Unfortunately for Zoltan II, both sub-hordes quit the Kutai Alliance, with the horsemen heading home or becoming mercenaries. But the Kutai numbers were still overwhelming. Ramesevka had to withdraw again, this time with with swarms of Kutai cavalry hacking at his retreating army.
Both armies licked their wounds. Zoltan II had expected easier pickings, while the Xanthi Xanadu had taken a beating.

The Shahdom of Merv Ibram ben-Uthman, Shah of Bactria
Diplomacy: Tadzik (t), Persia (ea)
Ibram called for a new fortress in Khurasan.
The silver-tongued Minister Kalash found it easy to convince Tadzik to send money to Merv.
Good thing Ibram is a good administrator. Otherwise Persia would be at risk for rebellion, since it is 6 AP's from Merv. It would be closer if there were a postal road over the mountains or if Dasht'kavir were controlled (claimed does not count for control).
The Abbasid Caliphate Mu'hammid Al'rahi, Kaliphat Rasul Allah
Diplomacy: Selucia (fa)
Mu'hammid Al'rahi oversaw the extension of the royal road from Baghdad to Kamizak. He found new citizens for Raja, Kraznovia, Alzaj, and Kirkuk. And a shiny new port fortress sprang up in Cilicia.
The heir Abu Hanifa died of the cough, so Prince Gilad became heir. Lord Habib and Lord Bukhari talked Selucia into the highest possible status for a steppe region.
Imam Al Muslim Shahil, Siadat Kuran, "The Sustainer"
Diplomacy: Egypt (ca), Faiyum (ne), Cilicia (ne), Alzaj (ne), Algeria (ca)
Shahil founded some new religious sites.

The Rus Empire of Anatolia Igor, The Second Czar of Rus Anatolia
Diplomacy: None
Igor and General Derzinski took around 10,000 infantry to Lydia, Troy, and Colchis. At each stop, they bludgeoned the populace into accepting Roman Catholicism. In Troy, they found that the Patriarch of Constantinople had built a nice church for them to loot. Satisfied, the force returned to Paphlagonia.
The Patriarchate of Constantinople K695, Ecumenical Patriarch of The Holy Orthodox Catholic Apostolic Eastern Church
Diplomacy: Thrace (ca)
K695 hopes he will receive better guidance soon.
The Byzantine Empire King Marcus, Imperator Romanus Orientalis
Diplomacy: Dalmatia (ne), Serbia (ne), Dobruja (aw)
King Phillip directed the expansion of Sparta to become a more significant port. Sadly, it is on the Aegean Sea and thus not within trade range of the Moors. Ah well. Anyway, he sent the leaders forth on diplomatic missions to some of the rough-and-tumble neighboring regions. The mountainous regions of Dalmatia and Serbia rebuffed the Byzantine overtures.
And in Dobruja, Lord Arelius barely escaped with his life. The pagans there took their revenge internally, by stamping out the Eastern Orthodoxy that had been growing within Dobruja.
Kingdom of Russia Ivan II, the Wanderer, King of Russia
Diplomacy: None
Ivan II ruled over his small kingdom. He scraped up enough money and manpower to construct a new port city in Rhzev. He named the city Dorogobuzh, after his favorite hunting dog. Sadly, both Princess Svetlana and Minister Gustav died of the flu during the harsh winter of '67-'68.
The Polish Kingdom Marko II Brodzinski, King of Poland
Diplomacy: None
Marko was a little worried about the Kutai, but not too much. He worked mostly on economic matters, though he did prepare his leaders and intelligence service for action. Lord Stiffen preached Catholicism in Galich. With the Papal help, almost all of the region's populace has been converted.
Prince Heinrich went slaving in the northeastern forests near Russia. He returned with a couple thousand slaves.

Gunther Schultz (M???) |
Denmark Altan, Imperator Danmark
Diplomacy: None
Altan postponed the crazy Arctic explorations for some other time. He and Zoltan (the heir) kept fathering girls.
The Imperator decreed that investments in infrastructure and public works be made for the good of the people. He was not one to forget the defenses of the realm, however. A new port fortress appeared in Jutland, on the North Sea. Stability was the trend, as the royal family prepared to consolidate their recent gains.
The Lombard Kingdom of Italy Luigi Orsini, Rex Sognari
Diplomacy: Switzerland (a)
Ludovico sent new citizens to Gerace, and thousand of woodsmen to Switzerland, where they cleared the forests to allow room for crops. He also equipped several thousand new heavy cavalrymen for the main army, in case the Kutai headed his way.
They did not, but what did happen was just as interesting. King Ludovico died in September of 1067, and Giovanni of Napoli declared that Luigi was unfit to take the throne. Giovanni volunteered to take up the task of ruling Italy. He traveled to Milan to confront Luigi. Giovanni tried to convince Luigi and Paolo's troops to join the cause, but failed. All Giovanni got was a trip to the gallows.
Because of the instability, Corsica, Tyrol, Cyprus, Calabria, Campania, Naples, Sicily, and Swabia rebelled.
The Roman Catholic Papacy Innocent VI, Il Papa, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ
Diplomacy: Bavaria (ne), Lorraine (mn), Thuringia (ab), Franconia (ab), Milan (ch), Ile de France (ca)
Innocent VI sent more missionaries to Galich to help Poland convert the region to Catholic. He increased religious sites in Turquis, Poland, and Italy.
Kingdom of Turquis Ottoman II, King of Turquis, Champion of the True Faith, Lord of the Franks
Diplomacy: Provence (ne), Languedoc (f), Lyonnais (a)
Ottoman II couldn't get Provence to friendly. But other diplomatic efforts were more successful.
New citizens moved to Amiens, Caen, and Solomanville.
The Island Khanate of Khitan K669, Thunder Lord, Khagan of the Khitan
Diplomacy: Cornwall (ne), Nottingham (f)
K669 (still the nameless one) remained in Nottingham, and had good fortune in his discussions. He was saddened by the fatal illness of his second son. Minister L477 had bad luck in Cornwall.
Khitan technology has developed to the point where they could become a Civilized culture if desired.
Ummayad Caliphate Al Cordoba Tarique, Caliph al Cordoba, Infidels Bane
Diplomacy: Gebel-Al-Tarik (fa)
Tarique ordered Bilbao and Naranjo to increase in size. By day he ruled the nation, and by night he spent time with his wife, and groaned at the news that his streak of non-male children had reached six girls in a row.
Khufu and Ali preached the purity and rightness of Allah in Catalonia. They made a little headway.
In Gebel-al-Tarik, Abulla was able to wrangle a military alliance. Then he checked Table 2-22 and saw that he might as well go home.
Synem got to cruise around in the shiny new warships, looking for pirates. They didn't come out to play.

The Algerian Caliphate His Royal Majesty, Hasan Asad, "Zaban Nogreh", Lord of the Rif, Lion of Morocco, Sword of the Prophet
Diplomacy: None
Hasan Asad called for Lord Jeffar.
"Jeffar, get in here! All my neighbors have a census and we don't! What's up with that? Don't we need one?!"
"Um, your royal majesty, a census would be rather costly and time-consuming. Shouldn't we concentrate our efforts on traditional areas and avoid this census fad?"
"No. I want one. Do it!"
"But your majesty, I have recently acquired some additional lands which will require attention these next few years. Can't Lord Garak do it?"
"You slug! Do I have to seize your lands?! Get to work!"
So Lord Jeffar got stuck with doing the headcount. This improved tax collection and manpower production. Lord Garak shuffled papers in the capital.
Al-jazair expanded.
The Songhai Herdsmen Onwardi, Chieftain of the Herds
Diplomacy: None
Shaka kicked the bucket in 1066, leaving Prince Onwardi to ascend to the throne. King Onwardi did nothing.
The Kingdom of Tchad Bob, King of the Dead, Omar Kanembu
Diplomacy: None
King Bob continued his long reign, enduring the death of Prince Femi but enjoying watching his grandsons grow to manhood. He had Kinnsasha, Mao, and Ngazargumu expanded.
Kingdom of Nigeria E655, Regent for K000, King of Benin, Darkknife

The Iroquois Nation Red Stone, Prime Chief of the Council
Diplomacy: None
Red Stone gave up on his risky northeastern exploration scheme concentrated on the northern frontier. He has grown fond of the fur caps, mittens, and coats that keep the cold away. Every year he trades his coat in for the latest style. Red Stone sent settlers to Albany and Tiagnami, colonizing both regions to 1 GPv. He and his heir each sired a couple offspring.
Iroquois technology has developed to the point where they could become a Civilized culture if desired.
Anasazi Republic Gaagii, Chief Executive of the High Desert
Diplomacy: Caddo (c, rebelled), Tahue (nt)
Gaagii grew weary of the slow pace of cultivation in Comanche. He ordered new citizens to move to Dzilth-na-o-dlith-he to speed the process. Little Turtle stayed in Caddo, but the distant region rebelled again. Buffalo Walks and Fist in the Wind talked to Tahue, and convinced the region to rejoin Anasazi.
The Sonoma Kingdom Winter Eagle, King of Sonoma
Diplomacy: None
Winter Eagle gave the surplus agro away to the people again. More settlers flooded into Ipai, building a port fortress with a city (Morpheus) around it. Now if Tepid Lizard would build a port city in Cuyutec, trade could be opened.
Unsure what to do with the flood of manpower coming from the heartland, Winter Eagle put them to work constructing countless sidewalks and sewers in Mokelumne.
The Aztec Empire Tepid Lizard, God-Emperor, Divine Ruler of Mexico
Diplomacy: Otomi (f), Yucatec (fa)
Tepid Lizard himself went to Otomi and sweet-talked them into signing up. General Delxa worked on smoothing over the hard feelings in Popoluca. Tepid Lizard married his cute young sister off to the Cuyutec ally, making the region friendly.
The ally from Achi died. Achi dropped to an economic-only alliance.
Chichen Itza, Tula, Tlalixcoyan, and Acapulco got new citizens.
The Andean Incan Empire Pachamac, Emperor of the Heavens
Diplomacy: None
Pachamac remained in Cuzco overseeing his growing realm. He named Huayna's oldest son, Guaritito, as third in line of succession in the Incan Empire. Unfortunately, the sickly boy drew his last breath in 1069.
Pachamac struggled to find jobs for the rising tide of manpower generated by the nation. He sent them off to colonize Aguano to 2 GPv, Iquito to 1 GPv, cut down most of the jungles in Iquito and Valdivia, and build a port city in Iquito called Quispe. After all this, there was still enough gold left over to fill up the entire region of Aquano with hundreds of canals, qanats, bridges, and local roads.
Quiro Mapuche Matarok, the Chosen
Diplomacy: None
Marok sent a few settlers to begin clearing the forests in Oic. He then died, and Amrokno had to quit goofing off and take over the job of ruling the kingdom. He did find time to father a child. The boy was born in February of 1070.
Admiral Aldur sailed south from Quiroci, attempting to round the legendary southern tip of the continent. He was beaten back by ferocious storms.
Aeden grew larger.
