United States of Asia (Yamato) Onabi, First Minister of the Diet
Diplomacy: Kazan Retto (nt), Okinawa (a)
Speaker Tojaro poured gold into improving the island of Shikoku. New terraces, sewers, and pathways sprang up all over the region. But Tojaro's poor health got to him at last in July of 1058. Speaker Onabi took the helm.
Admiral Jumanji set out on another expedition to explore the difficult waters northeast of the Kurils. Once again, storms and bad luck sent him back empty-handed, and short a few warships. But the studly Admiral Akira showed off his seamanship yet again. He set out east from Truk, and returned after mapping out the route to Ponape.
Meanwhile, Admiral Toyota sailed the shiny new warships over to Korea, and spent several months shuttling the infantry garrison there back to Japan. Then he patrolled the seas, protecting the USA's rich trade routes.
The Marianas cut ties as a result of Moluccan diplomacy. In economic news, bigger cities bode well for future Japanese prosperity. New residents moved to Hagugori, Besuboru, Jenna, Edo, Ise, and Heian. In Toyama, the city of Hejudo straddles the sea zone border.
The Lu'an Chinese Kingdom H.U. Lee, Supreme Monarch of Lu'an
Diplomacy: Hsuing'nu (ne)
H.U. Lee's quick trip to Hsuing'nu didn't do any good, since the terrain is incompatible with closer ties. But he did order the expansion of a few cities: Pienching, Kaifeng, Peking, and Yen-Ching.
Things did not start out well for the army trying to conquer Shensi. The commander, Y.A. Chang, found himself the target of a whispering campaign. The nasty rumors were that he "buttered his bread on the other side" and that he was skimming a third of the men's pay to build himself a summer mansion in Ta'ting for himself and his companion. Chang tried hard to stamp out the lies, but they only spread faster and got better. Several thousand men deserted him before the incident was over.
So it was a somewhat reduced Lu'an army that sieged Chang'an right away in the spring of 1056. Y.A. Chang led seven thousand sappers, five thousand horsemen, and over ten thousand spearmen against the Shensi capital. Inside, Qin Guan had only a handful of cavalry and infantry, plus two thousand siege troops and some good city walls. Y.A. Chang prevailed, nearly wiping out the Shensi defenses, although taking moderate losses. But then Chang was nearly squashed by a catapult stone launched by the city's defenders. This was to much for Chang. He completely lost his nerves, grabbed a horse, and sped east toward the capital. The stunned and now leaderless Lu'an army had to call off the siege and return to garrison in Shensi, which turned out to be a bad place to camp out...
The Shensi Chinese Kingdom Qin Guan, King of China
Diplomacy: None
Once again assassins struck at the royal family. But Qin Guan's security forces were more than a match for the Lu'an agents.
While Qin Guan was getting his butt kicked in Chang'an, L43A travelled north to Yun to retrieve the garrison there. He and the Prince of Lanchou returned to Shensi in July of 1057. Together, they commanded over twelve thousand swordmen. The Shensi charged into the disorganized Lu'an formations. The more numerous Lu'an inflicted dreadful losses on L43A. Almost half of the Shensi army was killed, wounded, or fled the field. But L43A did drive the Lu'an garrison out of Shensi and back to Houma (which, it turns out, was rather a better place to be...).
Happy with his victory, L43A set about reorganizing his army to bring back the wounded and runaways. But he is not too good of a leader, and when winter came he had not yet succeeded. And by spring of 1058, he had much bigger worries...
The Mongol Horde Batu, Kucha Khan
Diplomacy: Yumen and Suzhou (nt)
Lupo was happy. The Chinese were embroiled in war with themselves. A few years ago he had fooled them all with his long migration west toward the Shahdom of Merv. Now the hammer would fall. He would wake the Chinese from their rut!
The Mongol Horde hastened east along the silk route. They flew through the shocked region of Yanzhi and into Kansu, where they were rudely greeted by a respectable collection of field fortifications. The staunch defenders inflicted thousands of casualties on the nomads, and even killed Khan Lupo and captured General Khul. The new Khan, Batu, had to regroup the horde and attack again before clearing a path forward. This took until November of 1057. So it was already April of 1058 before the horde came crashing into Shensi.
Batu found a small, disorganized Shensi army trying to rouse themselves from their winter naps. L43A and his six thousand swordmen were quite shocked to see tens of thousands of nomads bearing down on them. The outcome was never in doubt. Barely one thousand Mongol losses, and the Shensi were obliterated. The Prince of Lanchou became a prisoner, and L43A escaped to Chang'an.
But Chang'an was not a safe refuge. Far from it. All forty thousand of Batu's warriors started cutting down trees to construct ladders and assault towers. Before long, the Mongol Horde was swarming at the walls of Chang'an. There were enough defenders to hold off the storm for a while, and the horde did take some losses. But by August of 1058, the Shensi capital was in Mongol hands. Gleefully the nomads sacked the city, carrying away everything that was not nailed down. Khan Batu personally opened the treasury to make sure no one would skim from the riches therein. Then the horde turned back to the region of Shensi and looted it, gathering up the few valuables that had not been destroyed or lost in the recent heavy fighting. With the capital in ruins and their army completely destroyed, Shensi China almost collapsed. Shock waves rippled through the kingdom. Kansu, Yanzhi, Wu Hai, Ningsia, and Ordos rebelled.
The mighty Mongols split up into three groups to plunder several Shensi regions. The Shan looted Ningsia and Wu Hai, the Turfan looted Huang and Ordos, and Khan Batu headed back to Kansu to loot the region and sack Luh-erh. After swarming the walls of Luh-erh, Batu released General Khul, and looted Yanzhi. After all this, the horde re-united in Suzhou late in 1060, loaded down with Chinese gold and valuables.
The Kin Horde Takhat, Khan of Kin
Diplomacy: Nope
Just in case northern China was feeling bored, the overpopulated steppe of Ordos, Kin, and Tumet produced the Kin Horde. Takhat rallied his nearly fifty thousand nomads in the region of Kin, promising them a better life in distant lands. Or maybe not-so-distant lands. Heh, heh.
Tangchou China Foo
Wong, Divine Overlord of the Middle-Kingdom
Diplomacy: None
Foo Wong's army realized that they were starving as well as 99% unpaid. With help from someone's secret agents, they killed Foo Wong and split up. Many of them became mercenaries, but most returned to Ch'in, where gold and food are both plentiful. Shentung returned to Shensi, and Tangchou became independant.
The Chin Kingdom Che II, Divine Overlord of the Middle-Kingdom, Lord of the River, Son of Heaven
Diplomacy: Kienchou (ne), Fukien (t)
Che Wei declared himself Che II and conducted a comprehensive census of his new realm. He was elated to witness the return of two-thirds of the army that the traitor Foo Wong had taken into his "Tangchou" rebellion. Che II expects that he will build a kingdom even greater than the one he inherited from his revered father. His oldest son came of age and became Crown Prince Che III.
Lin Piao caught the flu in Kienchou and died before getting a better agreement. And in Fukien, Tsu Lah reported some progress after long and difficult negotiations.
Bacphan Zhuangzu Fei-Tzu Yensung, Overlord of South China
Diplomacy: None
Emperor Fei-Tzu Yensung tried hard to sire an heir to the throne. He had two daughters but no sons. Che Ho continues to rot in his prison cell, hoping that Che II has not forgotten him in all the excitement in northern China. General Chou conducted a census of all Bacphan citizens, to improve tax collection. The Dalai Lama sent some funds.
The elderly General Wu had a nice little retirement ceremony. Fei-Tzu unvieled a statue of the general in a park in Tonkin. Wu bored everyone with his stories about the olden days.
The cities of Shantou and Vijaya expanded.
The Celestial Kingdom of the Jade Buddha Su Yin, 6th Incarnation of the Blessed Jade Buddha, Light on the Path to Nirvana, Illuminator of the Human Soul, Thinker of Deep Thoughts, Mayor Shangri-La
Diplomacy: Nakhon (mn)
Po Yin sent the usual monetary assistance to China and Southeart Asia. He also directed the addition of new citizens to Lhasa, and upgraded the region's fortifications. Missionary work in Assam and Palas went well, despite Palankala's opposition.
But other actions did not go so smoothly. Po Yin's proclamation
(see India) did not seem to be supported by anyone else, though Palankala
did withdraw. In all three Hindu nations, Buddhist representatives
tried to build relationships with local leaders. But the people didn't
appreciate the foreigners. Miscreants vandalized Buddhist homes, and
the peasants clamored for an end to Buddhist interference. The backlash
reduced Buddhist influence across all of India.

Mercenary QRs | c03,s04,i03,w03 |
Mercenary Leaders | Kolaga (M25B) |
The Katoomba Riders K863, Chief Hee Nalu-sen
Diplomacy: None
K863 played on the beach. He also ordered a new port city, Wennaroo, in Cooma.
The Molucca Seahold K477, Arikara of the Molucca Te Anu
Diplomacy: Marianas (fa), Kepeluan (nt, revolted), Sabah (fa, revolted), Sarawak (fa), Timor (ne)
H477 convinced Marianas to ingnore the Japanese claim and ally with the Seahold. P989 had trouble in Timor because of the incompatible terrain and religion.
Te Rangi died in December of 1060. The venerable king's passing triggered unrest in the Seahold. Sabah and the Marshalls became independant. In Sarawak, L2A9 rebelled but the new ally in the region was loyal, and cut off L2A9's head. In Kepeluan, L25B declared himself king of Molucca. But he was unable to convince any regions (besides worthless Kepeluan) or armies to join his rebellion. So he decided to name himself Kolaga and become a mercenary commander. So H477 was able to take over his rightful position as king without anyone trying to slit his throat.
The Javan Federation Yaraja, President Sirivjavan
Diplomacy: Utara (fa)
Nobogoro concentrated the nation's efforts largely upon a single region: Utara. Conversions efforts there were intense, and General Jarayao talked with the region's leadership about joining the Javan Federation. In 1060 Nobogoro died of a fever, and Yaraja became president.
Luzon rebelled because of communication problems over the long distances. Hainan stayed in for now. Tarai is the name of the new port city in Utara.
The United Monarchy of the Avans The Celestial, Virtuous, and Benignant King Tran Vinh, Monarch of all Burmese People, Munificent Potentate of Pegu, Dispenser of all Avan Goodness and Benevolence
Diplomacy: Sagaing (ea), Manipur (f)
The Virtuous Dispenser of Goodness cursed and spat. He was mighty pissed at Surin for leaving the kingdom. "Who do those punks think they are?! They can't just rebel from the United Monarchy like that! I'm going to go over there myself and bring their sorry behinders back in chains!"
And so he did. A mostly infantry army, ten thousand strong, marched down the imperial highway to Narathu, then trudged east all the way to Surin. The population in Surin was not too keen on the idea of becoming slaves. An army of a few thousand men defended the region, and they even scrounged a few forts. The first battle was a draw, but native losses were heavy. In the second battle, Tran Vinh eliminated the local militia. Then the roundup began. The Avans shackled everyone in the region and led the slave procession back west to Pagan.
The aging General Malin barely had time to complete the census before he died. Tran Vinh was glad to be rid of the untalented geezer.
Despite the distance, Siam remained in the kingdom. Bangkok,
Honan Phen, Thaurin, and Narathu got larger.

1/1056 | The Dalai Lama issued a sweeping proclamation:
"Lords and Kings of Asia, Today is a watershed moment for our region. We in Lhasa have just received final confirmation of the conversion to Buddhism of the Kings of Xanthi Xanadu and Chola. The Peaceful and Celestial Realm is heartened with joy at the onward journey of the word of Buddha, and will do everything within its power to assist the citizen's of these great kingdoms on their road to discovery of the Pathway to Nirvana. By accepting the Path, the Kings of Chola and Xanthi now live under and benefit from the edict of Kuo Mojo, first incarnation of the Blessed Jade Buddha: "Follow the Buddha, and the Dalai Lama shall offer you his Shield, so that your journey might be safe from the Darkness..." Our region has lived peacefully, for the most part, for over a hundred years, and this has allowed a great prosperity for us all. This was, is and will be the Dalai's will. Those that have rejected the Buddha, and who attack his followers with wanton violence derived from earthly and base desires, will soon discover just how strong that Celestial Shield is. Go in Peace, Po Yin, 5th Incarnation of the Blessed Jade Buddha, "Light on the Path to Nirvana, Illuminator of the Human Soul, Thinker of Deep Thoughts, Mayor of Shangri-La" |
Po Yin was disappointed to hear a defeaning silence all across India. The Hindu populance of the subcontinent was not enthusiastic about this plan. If indeed the Cholans and Xanthi did intend to convert, they gave no public sign or acknowledgement. So Po Yin was not really surprised to hear that his attempts to bring Hinduism closer to Buddhism also fell on deaf ears.

Palankala Daldrum, Guardian of the Ganges, Divine Wrath of Kali
Diplomacy: None
In fact, only Palankala seemed moved by the statement from Lhasa. Emperor Daldrum ordered a complete withdrawal from the Cholan regions. General Dhala gathered up the garrisons from Pandya and Chola and travelled north along the coast. He liberated Kalinga from Cholan control, dropped off some infantry in Palas, and marched up the road to Maghada. There he defended the western border.
New citizens moved to Tamralipti, Bihar, Bhuphaala, Dharaharama, and Maghadara. And Tamralipti received many new sewers and baths.
The Chola Mandalam Kakatiya, Mandala Chola
Diplomacy: None
Kakatiya was happy to see the Palans taking their army home. He went to Kollam to oversee the return of the conquered regions to Cholan control, and to reintegrate the intelligence and government agencies returned by Palankala. But the captured agents and bureaucrats had been shipped off to Tamralipti long ago, and that's where they stayed. King Kakatiya sent Daldrum a note requesting their return.
Admiral Hamralipti took the several thousand light spearmen and conquered Sri Lanka. He then loaded his men up onto ships and moved them to Pandya to defend the kingdom.
There was a little unrest in the nation over the Dalai Lama's proclamation, but nothing came of it.
Xanthi Empire of Xanadu Palpatyn VI, Grand Poobah of the Xanthi Zieterund, Rajah of the Rajputs
Diplomacy: None
Palpatyn VI fathered a girl and a boy. He also shuffled around some trade fleets to get better coverage on the most profitable routes.
Maybe it was the rampaging nomadic hordes in Asia that convinced Palpatyn to concentrate on defensive measures. He emplaced new fortifications in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, and Tarain. In Jenni, Amchan, Madoka, and Kayal, new fortresses were build right next to the cities, and all four cities grew to emcompass their fortresses.
Sultanate of Sind Shah K347, Mansurashah, Protector of the Indus, Barrier of Allah
Diplomacy: None
Shah Nasser died of the cough before his eldest son even reach his
fifth birthday. L347 seized the throne, exiling Nasser's family and
children. The shock drove Carmania, Kutch, Surashtra, Ghazni, and Sahis
out of the kingdom.

The Kutai Horde K653, Kutai Khan
Diplomacy: Balkash Horde (a)
Zoltan's nose twitched. "Is that gold I smell?" He headed west again, still looting everyone who didn't join him. Osman, Saraba, and Betpak were drained of valuables. Khan Zoltan had great results in one area. The Balkash pulled up their tent stakes and joined the mighty Kutai Horde. Next, the regions of Tarhain and Turgay got looted. The only grey cloud on the horizon way when the allied Yumen Khan died, his successor took the entire Yumen sub-horde and slipped away to set out on their own. Some returned east, and some settled locally. Now numbering over 100,000 horsemen, the Kutai headed for Otrar, the frontier of the growing Shahdom of Merv...
The Shahdom of Merv Ibram ben-Uthman, Shah of Bactria
Diplomacy: None
Not overly concerned about the nomadic threat, Shah Uthman went looking for more slaves. In Kuldja he found them. But this time Uthman was not content to merely raid for able-bodied men. No, he deployed his twenty-some-odd thousand mostly cavalry army to round up the entire populance. Kuldja exploded in revolt. Five thousand men took up arms against Uthman. But they were crushed like bugs. The rest of the hapless peasants got herded into holding pens. But before Uthman could move back to Otrar to defend the frontier, mumps ended his life. The leaderless army milled about in Kuldja. Ibram ben-Uthman became Shah.
Two Shahdom leaders were in Otrar when the time came. A scout came galloping into regional headquarters. "The Kutai are coming! The Kutai are coming!" Prince Aden ben-Uthman discussed the situation with General Nasheth. "We have no field fortifications. We will be outnumbered by at least ten-to-one. We should withdraw to the city." Nasheth agreed. The small Merv army withdrew to the respectable walls of Tashkent. A messenger sent to call up the allied army in Bactria was rebuffed. The ally refused to send his army to certain death. So the defenses of Otrar were few when the Horde arrived. But Merv had an ace in the hole...
Prince Aden had been a little off in his estimate. The Shahdom's Otrar garrison was outnumbered by more like a few dozen to one. Khan Zoltan brought his enormous thundering Horde into Otrar late in 1060, looking to add to his growing pile of booty. But it was not to be. Somehow, an assailant found him alone and slipped a knife between his ribs. As the life drained quickly from his body, Zoltan called out to his son H653. "Son," he rasped, "avenge my death!" H653 swore to his father that the Shahdom would pay for their insolence. Thus satisfied, Zoltan closed his eyes for the last time, and the year 1060 came to a close.
The Abbasid Caliphate Mu'hammid Al'rahi, Kaliphat Rasul Allah
Diplomacy: None
Mu'hammid Al'rahi is looking for a new hand to guide him. In the meantime, he upgraded the defenses. A new corps of heavy horsemen and many new fortifications should make the empire a safer place.
Imam Al Muslim Shahil, Siadat Kuran, "The Sustainer"
Diplomacy: None
Habar died, and his protege Shahil became The Sustainer. Everyone took a five year vacation.
The Fatimid Empire of Egypt Kodo'Fah, Guardian of the Holy Places, Emperor of Egypt.
Diplomacy: Zeila (fa)
Kodo'Fah extended the imperial highway from Egypt to Mansura, bridging the Nile. He also added dozens of new transports to existing trade routes, and even decided to switch the Abbasid trade from land to sea. After all, Table 2-24 indicates that the trade route is only getting 85% throughput, right? But Mu'hammid Al'rahi in Baghdad refused to go along with the switch, pointing out that as a consequence of Section 12.1, step 2c, sea trade only averages a 75% throughput, and can only increase for one partner at the expense of the other. Kodo'Fah reluctantly gave up his plan, and he placed those transports on internal trade.
And in Alwa, decades of missionary work finally paid off, as the last
of the region's Christians converted to Sunni Islam in a major missionary
effort.

The Rus Empire of Anatolia Igor, The Second Czar of Rus Anatolia
Diplomacy: None
Boyar took some time off. Probably too much, as he keeled over in 1058. Igor took the throne without incident.
The Patriachate of Constantinople K695, Ecumenical Patriarch of The Holy Orthodox Catholic Apostolic Eastern Church
Diplomacy: Thrace (mn)
Levillus followed Boyar's lead, both in vacationing and in dying in the year 1058. K695 is his successor.
The Byzantine Empire King Phillip, Imperator Romanus Orientalis
Diplomacy: Attica (a)
King Phillip set up puppet governments in Bosnia and Serbia so he could remove the garrisons from those regions. Now that the Eastern Romans are eliminated, he demobilized some portions of the army to build bridges and dams in Thrace. Finally, he directed a count of all the citizens of the Empire, to improve tax collection.
The ally in Dobruja died of a fever, and the region rebelled.
Kingdom of Russia Ivan II, the Wanderer, King of Russia
Diplomacy: Novgorod (f), Veposkava (ne)
Ivan invested in government and other internal matters. Gustav used his silver tongue to convince Novgorod to fully join the kingdom.
The Polish Kingdom Marko II Brodzinski, King of Poland
Diplomacy: None
Bram II conducted a census from the imperial capital of Warzau. The stress must have been too much for him; he died late in 1057. His son Marko II arranged a nice funeral. Marko mourned only a short time before taking the throne. In Galich, Lord Christepher began the long task of preached Christianity to the pagans.
Meanwhile, Lord Stiffen gathered up five thousand men and went raiding in the eastern forests. He hit Lithuania, Potolsk, Kur, and Daugava. The Potolsks hacked up many Polish men because Stiffen got lost in the region for a week.
The feudaly ally in Galich passed on to his eternal reward, but the region kept it alliance with Poland. The ally in Moldavia galloped his horsemen up the Danube and raided the plains of Banat and Alfold. But Marko II shares his father's dismal administrative skills, and this caused Moldavia to revolt from the empire by the end of 1060.
The cities of Stuttgart, Warzau, Praha, and Odessa got bigger.

Denmark Altan, Imperator Danmark
Diplomacy: None
Altan clapped Prince Aginor on the back. "Aginor," the Emperor rumbled good-naturedly, "truly you and General Thor are the best explorers in the world! Anyone who can get to Iceland can surely get a little farther west. And this time, bring me back some goodies!"
Prince Aginor rounded up his flotilla again and set out into the icy seas. He and Thor reached Iceland by summer. With a shout, the troops swarmed off the ships to scavenge valuables from the locals. Aginor was embarassed at the pittance stolen from the penniless fishmen and shepherds. But he had better things to do, so they set off to the west, mapping the route to something called "Gronland."
Well, they didn't get far before an storm hit the fleet. Half of their ships capsized. Death came within minutes to all men dumped into the frigid waters. Prince Aginor returned in shame to Gormavn. He hid from Altan for a full day before getting the courage to admit he had lost half the fleet, and only had one bag of silverware to show for the raid on Iceland.
Altan heard bad news from Uppsala as well. The missionaries there got caught stealing pagan idols. The resulting backlash reversed years of hard work converting the region.
The only good news was that Brittany and Westphalia stayed in the empire despite Altan's miserable administrative ability.
Grand Duchy of Slovenia (f.k.a. Verona) Leonardo Maquina, Grand Duke of Verona, Defender of Italy, Chosen of Christ, Shepherd of the Faithful
Diplomacy: None
Leonardo ordered the expansion of Neuvopatria.
The Lombard Kingdom of Italy Ludovico Orsini, Rex Sognari
Diplomacy: Romagna (ea), Apulia (nt to Slovenia)
Ludovico ordered economic improvements. New citizens moved to Palermo, Naples, and Gerace. He started trade with the Byzantine Empire. And a vast multitude of canals, aqueducts, bridges, roads, and swamp drainage projects were emplaced in Romagna.
Maximo Galliando didn't find any suspicious persons in Venice. But the local authorities caught him snooping about and threw him in jail for two weeks before the situation got straightened out.
The lord of Swabia got Apulia to weaken their ties to Slovenia. In Romagna, Prince Verona had an easy time, since Italian gold was pouring into the region for public works
The war hero Prince Berenger died after eating some bad meat. Ludovico held a nice funeral, recalling Berenger's daring exploits during the siege of Constantinople.
The Roman Catholic Papacy Innocent V, Il Papa, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ
Diplomacy: Provence (ca), Burgundy (ca), Lombardy (ne), Ile de France (mn), Bavaria (ne), Thuringia (ch), Kauyavia (ne), Little Poland (ch), Milan (ne), Franconia (ch)
Innocent worked on his control web, hoping to increase his income at the same time. He hopes an ambitious hand will come soon to guide him.
Kingdom of Turquis Ottoman II, King of Turquis, Champion of the True Faith, Lord of the Franks
Diplomacy: Provence (t)
Ottoman II opened trade with the Island of the Khitan and with Algeria. He took all his leaders down to Provence to diplomacize the **** out of them. It worked.
The rapidly-growing royal road now reaches out to the city of Lyons.
The Island Khanate of Khitan K669, Thunder Lord, Khagan of the Khitan
Diplomacy: Cornwall (t)
K669's patience paid off when the government expanded. L477 did a good job getting buddy-buddy with Cornwall.
K669 sent settlers to tame the depopulated wilderness in Mercia. He had almost forgotten about the city therein. "Hmmm," thought the Thunder Lord, "conquer Nottingham or convince them to join? Hmmm." Meanwhile, a very large cavalry army escorted thousands of Khitan citizens as they booted the English out of their homes in London and Portsmouth, taking over all the important jobs, businesses, and residential areas in the cities. The English became the cities' lower class citizens.
The Tangut Khan III died, and his horde finally fully integrated with the Khitan. There are no more sub-hordes left for K669 to worry about.
Ummayad Caliphat Al Cordoba Tarique, Caliph al Cordoba, Infidels Bane
Diplomacy: Old Castille (fa), Gebel-Al-Tarik (ne)
Mustapha ruled over his kingdom, but death caught up with him in November 1058. His son Tarique had a great time in Old Castille. Not only did he become king, he also secured a military alliance with Old Castille, and became father to two sons and two daughters.
General Ali's diplomatic advances in Gebel-Al-Tarik fell on deaf ears. The independant-minded mountain men will be hard to convince.
The ally in New Castille died, and the region regressed to an
economic-only alliance.

General Gefera died soon after completing his task of gathering up the mighty fleet garrisoned in Cheliff. When King Al-Jazir died in 1058, the heir Hasan Asad was not yet of age. General L653 took up the job of regent.
The Songhai Herdsmen Shaka, Chieftain of the Herds
Diplomacy: None
Shaka took a few years off. This upset Bob in Tchad.
The Kingdom of Tchad Bob, King of the Dead, Omar Kanembu
Diplomacy: None
Bob increased the size of Ngazargumu. He also reduced the status of Salamat [GM: "What, he has Salamat? Hmmm. He's got Kreda, too."] Workers built a royal road halfway to Gao in Sudan. But Songhai didn't build the other half as expected.
General Moisu attempted to decrease religious fervor in the nation, but support for the old gods, while already low, did not decrease any further.
Kingdom of Nigeria
Korfan, King of Benin, Darkknife
Diplomacy: None
Korfan decided he needed more slaves. A LOT more slaves. He and his generals took twenty thousand spearmen north into Kwararafa. The region erupted in rebellion. Six thousand armed locals tried to stop the Nigerians, but Korfan's outstanding ability carried the day. He saw right through all the traps that the Kwararafans set for him, and he wiped them out with his heavy infantry battalions. All the region's population were rounded up and whipped into line for the march on Kafin.
Kafin fared little better than Kwararafa. They were able to trick Korfan a couple times, and eliminated a couple thousand of his men. But in no time at all, the region was enslaved just like their southern neighbors. After returning south, the huge slave herd labored mainly for canals and roads in Ife, but also to cut down more trees in Yoruba.
The cities of Onitsha, K'Kau, and Kaffa expanded.
Kingdom of Angola K645, Wise Leader and All-Around Nice Guy
Diplomacy: Kongo (nt)
K645 ruled over his fledgling kingdom.
Great Zimbabwe Lorkaunk, Shaka Zulu
Diplomacy: Melela (f)
Lorkaunk went with both of his lieutenants to Melela. After a few years of negotiations, the region agreed to fully integrate into Great Zimbabwe. The heir Adawendo ruled from Harare. He donated all of the surplus grain to the nation's populance.
King Lorkaunk felt Death approaching as his hair turned white. He decided to be remembered by posterity as a Great Man. Hence he began the emancipation of the slaves. But no progress was made, because he forgot to multiply the costs by his Imperial Size as mentioned in the paragraph right under Table 9-1. Lorkaunk kept right on ticking for these five years, however, and will be able to fully fund the emancipation soon if he still feels it's worth the cost.
Harare and Thabazimbe increased in size, and Thabazimbe smells better now with all the new sewers and baths. A fortress sprang up in Transkei, perhaps to discourage the fearsome Cape Kingdom from attacking.
Makura and Melela stayed in the empire, despite the difficulty of communications through the dense jungles of Gorongo and Melela.
The Divine Cape Kingdom The All-Knowing, All-Seeing K517, God-King of the Cape
Diplomacy: Namaqua (t)
K517 assured Lorkaunk that he is a peaceful God-King, interested only
in developing his poverty-stricken nation. He sent L165 to Namaqua
to talk them into a closer relationship.

The Sonoma Kingdom Winter Eagle, King of Sonoma
Diplomacy: None
Winter Eagle directed the usual massive grain giveaway. The population has come to love their generous leaders. Winter Eagle's eldest son came of age.
Winter Eagle had more manpower than he knew what to do with. But he found an excellent way to consume vast hordes of laborers. Ipai was not only colonized to a (1/6) North Amerind region, but settlers fanned out over the region and cut down the forests to make the region suitable for cultivation.
Anasazi Republic Borogrove, Chief Executive of the High Desert
Diplomacy: Caddo (ne)
Mome Rath built some nice aqueducts for Naghazi, but his poor administrative skills cost him the election. Borogrove has better-than-average skills, yet still Tepehuan, Tahue, Mescalero, Tonkawa, and Caddo are beyond his grasp. Perhaps if he built some postal roads, the couriers could maintain better communications with the southern and eastern reaches of the republic. Despite these problems, no region rebelled. The only problem was that the distance made diplomacy very difficult in Caddo.
Naghazi expanded.
The Iroquois Nation Red Stone, Prime Chief of the Council
Diplomacy: None
Red Stone returned to Erie and directed the arrival of new citizens in Kolomoki. His administrative skills are not bad, yet still he had trouble controlling Abitibi, Gronland, Yamasee, and Chatot. But the dice were kind to the Iroquois Nation for once. All four regions stayed.
The Aztec Empire KA71, God-Emperor, Divine Ruler of Mexico
Diplomacy: Maya (a)
Ometepec send his leaders forth on more diplomacy missions. In Maya, The Cuyutec and Otomi allies achieved a full alliance. In Popoluca and Yucatec, Delxa and Shining Pearl worked to reduce bad feelings.
The cities of Chichen Itza, Acapulco, Tlalixcoyan, and Lucatec expanded.
The imperial heir, Four-Jaguar, died of malaria. His younger brother PA71 took his place at Ometepec's side. A few years later, the venerable Ometepec finally kicked the bucket. Some regions protested KA71's ascension to the throne. Yucatec, Huave, and Kekchi left the empire. But everything (and everyone) else held together.
The Andean Incan Empire Pachamac, Emperor of the Heavens
Diplomacy: None
Pachamac mourned the passing of his son, but he knew his empire would need a strong leader to follow in his footsteps. To this end, he named his eldest remaining son (Huayna) as heir. Pachamac then settled in to rule over the nation.
Huayna set out ensuring that he would have an heir of his own. He celebrated the birth of first a boy and then a girl.
Pachamac put the vast riches and manpower of the empire to good use. He sent new citizens to Cuzco. Wairajikira and Chimu received countless terraces, canals, and local roads. And a great horde of settlers descended on Chimu and cut down most of the forests to make room for maize to grow.
Quiro Mapuche Marok, the Chosen
Diplomacy: None
Marok meant to tell his leaders to do something, but he got distracted.
