United States of Asia (Yamato)
Tojaro, First Minister of the Diet
Diplomacy Suifenhe (nt), Sikhote (nt), Amgu (nt), Tumin (nt, rebelled), Toyama (f)
Speaker Kengujo saw to the smooth running of the government. Realizing that military cooperation was adding a tremendous burden to the government, he released numerous feudal allies from their military obligations, while still offering them protection under the United States of Asia. Anshan, Hokkaido, Leyte, Sakhalin, and Silla were reduced to non-paying tributary status. Then, in the summer of 1048, Kengujo caught a pox and died. Tojaro took his place. No vice-speaker replaced Tojaro, in accordance with the new Table 6-2.
To be frank, Tojaro is not too good at administering large areas: Leyte and Tumin rebelled. Amgu stayed in for now.
Another huge diplomatic trip set out, this time on a massive six-leader whirlwind tour of the Sea of Japan. In the meantime, Admiral Akira took a couple dozen warships and mapped out the route to the Marianas islands.
Years of patient investment paid off. The Japanese society has been transformed from agricultural to free. A new city, Besuboro, graces the Inland Sea coast of Kagoshima. The cities of Jenna, Anjiro, Edo, Kobi, Ise, and Heian all expanded.
The Kingdom of Mongolia
K218, Kucha Khan
Diplomacy None
K218 invested in infrastructure to try to offset his miserable administrative abilities. Open for a Player.
The Kutai Horde
K725, Kutai Khan
Diplomacy Yumen Horde (a), Tuhnwhange Horde (fa)
From Karatao the Kutai set out to the west on an ally-gathering trip. K725 didn't make any friends in Naiman, Kerait, Uigur, Hsia-Hsia, or Tangut, although they did pledge non-paying tribute. But in Yumen, the local khan submitted to a full alliance. This success was quickly followed by the Tuhnwhang khan agreeing to a feudal alliance. The horde of far more than fifty thousand rested in Turfan.
Mao Chaing II, Supreme Monarch of Lu'an
Diplomacy None
Mao Chaing II didn't know what to do. So he saved all his gold (including the big pile sent from the Dalai Lama) and manpower and read all the books in the university library, which took five years.
New player.
The Shensi Chinese Kingdom
Qin Guan, King of China
Diplomacy Lanchou (ne)
Shensi spent its time on a variety of construction projects. Qin Guan also directed a bit of military housekeeping, picking up stray units here and there. Desao Songqi's miserable diplomatic skills were not enough to bring Lanchou fully into the Kingdom. Qin Guan became proud papa to two baby girls. A lot of gold arrived from Lhasa in crates marked, "FOR UNIVERSITY." Qin Guan dumped them into the treasury and promised Po Yin that they would be used properly. *cough* *cough*
A royal road now stretches from Kansu through Shensi into Huang.
The Chin Kingdom
Che Teh, Divine Overlord of the Middle-Kingdom, Lord of the River
Diplomacy None
Che Teh called out to his Lord Counsel (in rather a loud voice for such an old man), "It's about time I show that young cub how all this administrative stuff works! Bring me the scrolls for the last fiscal year and get my grandson in here!" Che Wei wasn't too devastated, since his evenings were spent trying to expand the royal line a bit, and with some success. "Cool!" the Heir mused, "A day job AND a night job!"
Foo Wong patrolled the Huang Hai and adjacent sea zones, keeping a lookout for pirates and sneak attacks. On the southern border near Bacphan Zhuangzu, Mi Fa delivered an Imperial Rescript. The ornate parchment scroll officially thanked the Lord of Kienchou for his efforts on behalf of the Empire and commanded him to take his well-earned ease for the next four years. The vacationing lord choked on an unpeeled grape, and his successor cut all military and most economic ties with the empire. In the southeast, the armies of the Kiang'si and Fukien allies were more than doubled.
Che Teh received an enraged letter from Fei-Tsu Han, protesting Che Ho's espionage and threatening to keep Che Ho imprisoned indefinitely (see below).
In Ganzhou, the city of Canton was built. And more citizens moved to Wontan, Jiujiang, and Mukden.
Bacphan Zhuangzu
K000, Overlord of South China
Diplomacy Nan Chao (f)
Just outside of Hong Kong, an itinerant bronze-smith named Wong Pei made a living searching out people who needed a little metal work done. Whenever he is tired, Wong Pei babbles incoherently in his sleep, apparently one of the northern dialects of Chinese. But one night a silk trader overheard a few alarming snatches of a dream conversation and rushed off to alert the local police. Within hours, Ministry of Security agents arrived to search Wong Pei's tent. They were shocked to find encoded records of troop movements and fortifications. Despite his indignant protests, Wong Pei was dragged off to the dungeon in Hong Kong to await further investigation. Lots of diligent research, and a carefully-laid trap for the spy's courier, revealed that this "Wong Pei" was in fact Prince Che Ho, grandson of Ch'in Emperor Che Teh! Fei-Tsu Han was enraged and petrified at the same time. For the Ch'in Empire's power is well-known.
Perhaps it was this scare that did him in, but Fei-Tsu Han died at an early age like his father before him. Both generals promised loyalty to the not-even-teenage-boy-king, K000. Hopefully he can shake off the family curse of early death. And also figure out what to do about wily old Che Teh in Ch'in.
Cities increased: Vijaya, Hong Kong, Shantou, Tai'li, and Saigon.
The Celestial Kingdom of the Jade Buddha
Po Yin "the Generous", 5th Incarnation of the Blessed Jade Buddha, Light on the Path to Nirvana, Illuminator of the Human Soul, Thinker of Deep Thoughts, Mayor Shangri-La
Diplomacy Hupei (ca), Thaton (ca), Dai Viet (ne), Lingsi (ne), Lingnan (ab), Gouangxi (ab)
Po Yin sent more gold to Ch'in, Shensi, and Lu'an to bolster their universities. After hearing of the incident in Hong Kong, he sent Fei-Tsu Han and Che Teh letters asking them to please play nicely.

Mercenary QRs | c04, s04, i04, w02 |
Mercenary Leaders | Saees (M???) |
Palankala
Kalimbo, Guardian of the Ganges, Divine Wrath of Kali
Diplomacy Sikkim (t)
Kalimbo raised many new troops to deal with the southern threat. He hired the able Saees to be the nation's combat advisor. These two were joined by General Darmal and the Sikkim Raj in their march south along the coast. In August of 1046 the Palankala battle group burst into Vengi. No one was around except the workers building the new city. Kalimbo laughed at them and pressed on, knowing that he didn't have time to mess with small stuff. A tiny Cholan and local force in Madurai slowed things down a bit, but by July of 1047, the resistance was crushed, and Kalimbo again rode southward. In April of 1048 the Palankalas swarmed into Chola to pacify the region and assault Tanjore. Both tasks were easy, since there were no defenders within 100 miles. Chola and Tanjore received garrisons, and by May 1049 Kalimbo had advanced into Pandya for the big fight.
Just before the big battle in Pandya, an assassin almost took Mujahid's life, but alert security forces foiled the attempt. Next, Palankala agents convinced two thousand Cholan soldiers to desert their units and go home to their families. In the attack, Kalimbo and the fearsome mercenary captain Saees commanded several thousand mixed cavalry, two dozen thousand mixed infantry, and several thousand siege engineers. Poor Mujahid only led several thousand mixed cavalry and infantry, a small handful of warships, and a few field forts which had escaped demobilization. Worse yet, he was awful as a combat leader. Kalimbo only lost two thousand men capturing Chola and utterly destroying the Cholan army. Mujahid fled to Seylan, and the Cholan capital fell easily. There was no gold to sieze, but Kalimbo did capture a few government administrators and the Cholan university
The Chola Mandalam
Mujahid, Mandala Chola
Diplomacy Kakatiya (a), Madurai (ne)
Mujahid planned many economic improvements. To obtain the necessary manpower, he demobilized lots of city walls and field fortifications. The sneak attack by the dirty Palankalans was well-timed to take advantage of Chola's near-total lack of defenses. Andhra died early in 1046 and was unable to perform any of his many assigned tasks. Luckily, this prevented him from demobilizing half of the troops defending Pandya.
After the debacle in Chola, Mujahid escaped on a warship to Seylan and set up a temporary capital there. Despite his military ineptitude, he is quite a charming guy, and vows to recover his land from the greedy northerners. The Cholan trade fleets in Kollam escaped to other cities.
Minto's diplomatic efforts in Madurai were cut short and demolished by the Palan army.
In Madurai, workers completed the port city of Madros. Gondala and Polonarva got bigger.
Xanthi Empire of Xanadu
Palpatyn VI, Grand Poobah of the Xanthi Zieterund, Rajah of the Rajputs
Diplomacy None
Yound Emperor Palpatyn VI trained for adulthood under Mikal's tutelage. Ramesevka and Batrami preached Hinduism to the Buddhist minority in Assam, with some success.
A wave of urbanization swept through Xanadu. New citizens moved to Kyoko, Amchan, Madoka, Reichan, Limu, Beth, Lyssa, Jenni, and Kayal.
Sultanate of Sind
Nasser, Mansurashah, Protector of the Indus, Barrier of Allah
Diplomacy Bandar (t), Carmania (nt)
The youthful Nasser handed leadership of the entire army over to General Khayyatt. Amazingly, Khayyatt did not overthrow his liege (yet). Nasser sailed off to Bandar to negotiate a closer diplomatic relationship with that region. Nasser spent many of his days hunting with the local chieftains in the woods and mountains of the wilderness. But even so, the Sunnis of Bandar we slow to accept their Shi'a king.
Nasser's enthusiasm for hunting is matched only by his lust. He brought his wife along on the trip, and tried very hard to make some babies, but he must have been firing blanks.
In Sahis, the elderly Naheef continued his preaching. He is nothing if not patient. On important Shi'a holy days he publicly recited majlis, dramatic accounts of the sufferings of the Holy Imams at the havds of the Umayyad usurpers in the early days of the Faith. He also organized local Shi'a youths and taught them how to perform passion plays demonstrating the martyrdoms of the Imams Ali and Husayn. He efforts were fairly successful.
Khayyatt stayed near the capital to guard the kingdom against enemies.
The Satrap of Carmania was glad to be released of his feudal obligations. Now he is free to do whatever he wants, which isn't much different from when he was a feudal leader.
Rashid moved additional citizens into Mansura.

Uthman alSaidar, Shah of Bactria
Diplomacy None
Ali-ben Kharj took ten thousand cavalry and some settlers to Khurasan to put friendly residents in control of the region. Khurasan almost rose up against the colonists, but the numbers were almost four to one. Khurasan is now fully controlled by the Shah.
Like a phoenix from the ashes, Samarkhand arose once more from the fields of Kara-Khitai. Some brand-new field forts were built to help defend the shiny city.
The Betpak Horde
K765, Khan of Betpak
Diplomacy None
K765 died, and his small band disintegrated.
The Abbasid Caliphate
Mu'hammid Al'rahi, Kaliphat Rasul Allah
Diplomacy None
Mu'hammid Al'rahi took a long vacation.
Imam Al Muslim
Abrahm, Siadat Kuran, "The Sustainer"
Diplomacy Raja (ne), Hahmar (ca), Baghdad (ca), Murcia (mn), New Castille (ab), Valencia (ne), Basra (mn), Media (ab), Hamadan (mn), Persia (ab), Diyala (ab)
Five more long years of hard work yielded another big crop of holy sites. Isak disappeared when he found out he was in violation of table 6-2.
Diligent missionary work in Kassala finally converted the last of the region's Coptics to the One True Faith.
The Fatimid Empire of Egypt
Harum el Hadad, Guardian of the Holy Places, Emperor of Egypt.
Diplomacy Alwa (fa)
Harum el Hadad returned home to rule his rich nation and to father a couple kids. The outstanding diplomat Karain had a difficult time in Alwa because of religious and other differences.
In Syria, generals Mochma Alwi and Memet Oman pulled off a great feat. Their large army of infantry detected major cultic movements in the region. It turns out the cult was trying to spirit its stronghold away to a safer location. Instead, the shadow warriors found themselves surrounded by a wall of Fatimid troops. For once, the cultists came to their senses and chose to surrender rather than die. Memet Oman allowed the rabble to turn in their weapons and return to Islam, but detained the leaders of the cult for further questioning. After determining that he had indeed captured all essential personnel in the cult, Memet Oman tossed them in jail to let Harum el Hadad determine their fate.
The rebirth of the Empire continued with the founding of the university in Dimashq and the upgrading of cities throughout the land: Al-iskandariyah, Al-maraghah, Tobruq, Al qahira, and Al aqabah. Education and urbanization can now be the focus of Harad's rule since the cult has surrendered.
The royal road in Al'maraghah was extended north as a postal road to Al'iskandariyah.

The Rus Empire of Anatolia
Boyar Izjaslav, The First Czar of Rus Anatolia
Diplomacy None
King Boyar ruled over his nation. He sent his generals forth to expand the realm.
The heir, Igor Izjaslav, took a small force of light cavalry and mixed infantry to force tribute from Galatia. The five thousand defenders inflicted heavy casualties upon him, but had to succumb in the end. Next on the list: Vaspurakan. The locals mustered six thousand infantry and beat Igor back. Igor retreated into Galatia with only a couple thousand heavy infantry to his name.
Lord Kane took several thousand mixed infantry across the mountains into Phrygia and managed to extract tribute from Phrygia. But his men took quite a beating, and he decided not to mount a suicidal attack into Psidia.
General Derzinski woefully underestimated the time required to march settlers and heavy infantry over mountains and through forests. He also didn't know that his slow-moving force required well over a YEAR for every region colonized. In any case, they settled Pontus, siezing all the good land from the Greeks in the region. Then, Derzinski headed over the mountains and pacified Lazica. This task was barely completed, leaving no time to begin the colonization as the year 1050 drew to an end.
The Atelzuko Khan was rudely repulsed when he attacked Pechneg. The khan of Patzinak was similarly rebuffed in Kiev.
The Eastern Roman Empire
Emperor Stavros, Augustus of the Romans, Basileus of the Hellens, Supreme Among the Princes of Christendom, Equal of the Apostles, God's Own Anointed Vice-Gerent on Earth
Diplomacy Rhodes (t)
A famine swept over the empire. The tiny region of Constantinople is not productive enought to feed its hungry city and army. But a larger problem loomed. A big Byzantine army crashed over the undefended great wall on the western border and subdued the region of Constantinople. Nikolas had elected to stay holed up in the city because of its tremendous walls. Luckily for Nikolas, the Byzantine did not bring enough troops and siege engineers to effectively islolate the city (Table 6-15).
Late in the year 1050, Nikolas died, and his son Stavros took up the burdensome mantle of emperor. So the year ended with Stavros staring down from Constantinople's very high walls, hoping the Byzantines would go away and give the region back before the famine ripped his army to shreds.
An intrepid player has picked up this nation.
The Patriachate of Constantinople
Levillus, Ecumenical Patriarch of The Holy Orthodox Catholic Apostolic Eastern Church
Diplomacy Bithnia (ne), Lydia (ne), Thrace (ab), Heraclea (ne), Thessaloniki (ab), Macedon (ne)
Levillus and Bishop Marellus established a few new abbeys.
The Byzantine Empire
King Phillip, Imperator Romanus Orientalis
Diplomacy None
Young King Phillip launched an attack on the Eastern Roman Empire to put them out of their misery. He hired Shasa and his eight thousand troops. Lord Anthony picked up some infantry and cavalry from Bosnia. King Phillip brought the entire home army, including a corps of new light infantry. They stormed into the region of Constantinople, finding the great wall undefended. The region is now a pacified tributary of the Byzantines.
Prince Berenger from Lombardy showed up right on schedule with the twenty heavy warships. The large force deployed around Constantinople to starve the city into submission. But it didn't work. The defenders were too numerous, and the city's defenses to too expansive, to effectively passive siege. Consulting Table 6-15, Phillip's eyebrows shot up. "Holy smoke!" he muttered, "Maybe I need to rethink this." At the end of the year 1050, Phillip was still looking up at those imposing walls, hoping for famine to decimate the Eastern Romans, now that they produce practically no food at all.
Ivan II, the Wanderer, King of Russia
Diplomacy None
Ivan sent General Kovis out to slave raid Yaroslav.
The kingdom's first city, Moskva, sprang up in Kirivitch on the banks of the Dvina.
The Polish Kingdom
Bram II Brodzinski, King of Poland
Diplomacy Bavaria (f), Pomern (f), Bohemia (f)
Marko singlehandedly brought both Bavaria and Bohemia into the empire. He died in 1050. His son Bram II took over as emperor. Bram is bad at this, but Moldavia didn't rebel. Yet.
Lord Stiffen grabbed most of the army and headed for Lorraine. He arrived late in August of 1046 with a mostly-infantry force of over twenty thousand. Lorraine was a feudal ally of Turquis [France], and did not have any defensive assistance. They were crushed like bugs and occupied.
Bram released an imperial proclamation:
Hear ye, hear ye. We have sent our army to retake the stolen region of Lorraine from the French Turqs. Lorraine is rightfully a Polish region, and so it shall remain. You Turqs can stay on your own side of the Rhine, or face the consequences!.

Going downhill. Lombard diplomacy induced Romagna to revolt. Open for a Player.
The Lombard Kingdom of Italy
Ludovico Orsini, Rex Sognari
Diplomacy Romagna (un to Slovenia)
Paolo of Syracuse and his six thousand cavalry tried to sneak through Provence and Languedoc. They were almost as stealthy as a herd of elephants. The Turqs discovered them right away, but ended up allowing Paolo to move unmolested to Catalonia. Unfortunately, young Paolo developed a fever and died shortly after arriving in the region. Prince Achmed of Cordoba was in charge of Catalonia, having just conquered the region. He left the leaderless Lombards alone.
Ludovico sent three of his best diplomats to Romagna. The region repudiated its ties to Slovenia.
Prince Berenger sailed to Constantinople with a squadron of heavy warships. He blockaded the Eastern Roman city, disrupting trade. But he and the Byzantines together did not have enough forces to effectively isolate the Eastern Romans and starve them out.
Milan and Genoa got bigger again.
The Roman Catholic Papacy
Innocent V, Il Papa, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ
Diplomacy None
Innocent prayed that someone would take this abandoned position and propel it to greatness. Open for a Player.
Soloman II, King of Turquis, Champion of the True Faith, Lord of the Franks
Diplomacy None
A highly suspicious force of several thousand Lombard cavalry crashed through Provence and Languedoc without attacking. Soloman II in Ile de France was on alert, but too far away to intervene. The Count of Provence was about to confront the ruffians, but let them pass when he noticed he was outnumbered 4 to 1. The Lombards passed through to Catalonia without doing any real damage.
Soloman II decided to demonstrate his commitment to trade and economic development. New cities sprang up everywhere. In Normandy, the port city Caen. In Ponthieu, the port city Amiens. In Lyonnais, the city Lyons. Monaco expanded. And the royal road from Paris to Nivernais was completed.
