Mercenary Leaders | Yuang Xi (M???) |
United States of Asia (Yamato)
Kengujo Tohiro, First Minister of the Diet
Diplomacy Toyama (a), Okinawa (ea), Leyte (fa), Mindanao (nt, rebelled)
Several Japanese leaders went on a whirlwind exploration/diplomacy mission to the southwest. Leyte would have gone higher that feudal allied, but it's wilderness, and not very compatible to seafaring nations. Mindanao turned away from the Molucca claim, but rebelled when the delegation left.
The good servant Owari received his instructions: find out how to get to that Kazan Retto place. So off he went, eager to chart new waters. He didn't return. Sakhalin and Hokkaido were allowed to degrade to feudal allied.
Kengujo ordered a massive round of city expansion: Jenna, Anfiro, Edo, Kobi, Kentosani, Ise, and Heian expanded. Also, many new irrigation projects now increase Kwanto's harvest.
The Kingdom of Mongolia
K218, Kucha Khan
Diplomacy None
K218 came of age. Open for a Player.
Mao Cheng, Supreme Monarch of Lu'an
Diplomacy Kin (ne), Tumet (nt)
Mao Cheng was very eager to get control over the northern frontier steppe regions. But as before, diplomacy with the pagan barbarians of the north continued to be quite difficult.
The royal road was extended from Yen-Ching to Tsing'dao. Tsainan received regional improvements.
The Shensi Chinese Kingdom
Qin Guan, King of China
Diplomacy Huang (f), Chinling (f)
The ally from Huang died and left the region to Qin Guan. The war heroine Princess Qin Boqing visited Chinling. She toured the region, and thousands assembled to greet her and hear her speak. She spoke of the need for Chinese unity in the face of constant danger from the steppe. Her untimely death did not reduce her persuasive impact upon the region.
The city 1+0p0 in Shentung is now called Chengtu.
The Chin Kingdom
Che Teh, Divine Overlord of the Middle-Kingdom, Lord of the River
Diplomacy Kiang'si (fa), Fukien (a)
Che Teh's boring paperwork was interrupted by horrible news. Che Hua, the Imperial Heir, was killed by assassins while napping in his chambers. The apparently scaled the castle wall with metal hooks and entered through Che Hua's window. The sloppy operation was unable to conceal its sponsor: Bacphan Zhuangzu.
Che Teh ordered dozens of new canals and local roads for Hunan. A sparkling new port city, Wonton, rests in Taiping on the Huang Hai. More citizens moved into Cheng'du, Wuhan, Taishan, Nanchang, Linan, and Chanjing.
Bacphan Zhuangzu
Fei-Tsu Han, Overlord of South China
Diplomacy Nan Chao (t)
King Chang kicked the bucket in May of 1036. The kingdom's leaders have vowed loyalty to the very young man Fei-Tsu Han. In Hong Kong, General Chou kept a lookout for any potential threats. He also decided not to use his overly large army to overthrow Fei-Tsu Han.
Fei-Tsu Han denies any involvement in the death of the Ch'in heir.
Cities increased: Xiamen, Shantou, Hong Kong, Tonkin, and Taipei.
The Celestial Kingdom of the Jade Buddha
K224 "the Generous", 4th Incarnation of the Blessed Jade Buddha, Light on the Path to Nirvana, Illuminator of the Human Soul, Thinker of Deep Thoughts, Mayor Shangri-La
Diplomacy Ghangde (ca), Shentung (mn),
By the end of 1040, most of the holy sited were connected to Lhasa. But some were not, and degraded: Kansu, Lu-erh, Shentung, Honan, Pienching, Hopei, Kaifeng, Yen, and Bao Ding.
More Hindus were converted to Buddhist in Assam and Palas. K224 smiled. Soon all residents of Assam, and hopefully later all of Palankala, will come to see the wisdom of the Path to Nirvana.

The Javan Federation
Jarobono, President Sirivjavan
Diplomacy Perak (ne), Bali (nt), Luzon (down to fa)
Suddenly, the residents of Luzon realized that they live in a wilderness region, and according to Table 2-22, their maximum status (unless colonized) is feudal allied. So they reduced their ties with Sirivjaya. The local honcho in Perak told Jarakoni to be happy with economic allied until their religions are the same.
Sunda and Singhasari got bigger.
The United Monarchy of the Avans
The Celestial, Virtuous, and Benignant King Phunim, Monarch of all Burmese People, Munificent Potentate of Pegu, Dispenser of all Avan Goodness and Benevolence
Diplomacy Arakan (ne), Sagaing (nt)
Anisakan II retired, leaving the kingdom to his son Phunim. This did not go over well with some regions. Lampang and Padishan rebelled. Nakhon almost left the nation, but Avan Security Agency was able to keep things under control there.
The horrible diplomat Malin went to the Hindu wilderness of Arakan to woo them. Not only did he fail to bring a fresh coconut with him went he went to visit the chief of Arakan, but he then tried to convince the chief that he could arrange a royal marriage. The chief of the region informed Malin that only the Avan king or heir can offer royal marriages. Luckily, the region did not become hostile.
Phunim can't believe that Kanamori thinks he was the one who sent spies to infiltrate the Pala military.
Phunim ordered a royal road from Pagan to Narathu.
India | |
Mercenary Troops | 15mc, 15mi, 15ms, 13mw |
Mercenary QRs | c04, s04, i04, w02 |
Mercenary Leaders | Saees (M???) |
Palankala
Kanamori, Guardian of the Ganges, Divine Wrath of Kali
Diplomacy Samatata (f)
Some suspected Avan spies were caught trying to infiltrate the military.
The Dalai Lama's conversion efforts in Assam are nearing completion. What to do, what to do...
Some people in Bhutan became Hindu. Bombphan and Bhuphalla received new citizens. A fortress now improves the defenses of Samatata.
Xanthi Empire of Xanadu
Palpatyn IV, Grand Poobah of the Xanthi Zieterund, Rajah of the Rajputs
Diplomacy None
The heir Palpatyn V celebrated the birth of his first son. As if he didn't already have a large enough army, Palpatyn IV added a small pinch of troops to the total.
In Avanti, men and material converged to found the city of Lyssa. Kyoko, Reichan, and Amchan expanded.
The Chola Mandalam
Mujahid, Mandala Chola
Diplomacy Seylan (f), Chela (ea), Kakatiya (nt), Maldives (a), Vengi (f), Madurai (a)
Mujahid grew up a little more. All the other Cholan leaders were quite busy in a major storm of diplomacy. Also, the Seylan Raj died, leaving his lands to Mujahid.
Banavasi grew larger.
Sultanate of Sind
Rashid, Mansurashah, Protector of the Indus, Barrier of Allah
Diplomacy Sahis (ne)
Rashid didn't bother ruling. His took the army out on patrol. Along the way he brooded about the two regions that rebelled. In the end, he decided that it was better to let them go for now, and consolidate the Sultanate's position. While in Sukkur, he took a moment to inspect the irrigation system that his father ordered expanded shortly before his death. Allah willing, his own reign will be as great as his father's. Rashid also prayed for talented leaders and good administrative talent for his son Nasser.
Naheef blamed himself for Und's rebellion. He reluctantly went to Sahis to speak with the local Raj. Unfortunately, the region is already at its maximum status (tributary) towards a Shi'ite nation of strong faith. The Raj of Sahis showed Naheef Table 2-21, Maximum Region Status by Religion to prove his point.
In Sukkur, Sayyarah defended the region against any military threats. He found life rather boring, and snuck off to Multan as much as possible for wine and women. He had to be careful, though, since his boss was in the same region patrolling the area.
Mansura became larger.

Mercenary Troops | 30mc, 20mi, 10ms, 15mw |

Mercenary Leaders | Pireheram (M965) |
The Shahdom of Merv
Uthman alSaidar, Shah of Bactria
Diplomacy Transoxania (c), Bactria (nt)
The Shahdom prayed that the Liao would not return. Allah spared them this time, and the Liao passed by to the west. Uthman opened trade via the silk route with Abbasid and Shensi.
Open for a Player.
The Liao Horde
Petor, Khan of the Liao, Hand of the Prophet, Scourge of the Saracen, Benevolent Destroyer
Diplomacy Otrargh Horde (n)
In the cold winter months at the beginning of 1036, Petor spent a lot of time in his tent, trying to keep warm. It doesn't get to terribly cold temperature wise in Turkestan, but when the nighttime winds funnel down from the mountains, it feels like you're being cut with a knife. So Petor lay shivering on his cot, covered in a couple dozen sheep pelts, when he heard a commotion outside. He grabbed knife and peeked out of his tent. A dark-clad man stood over the body of Petor's guard. The assailant spun around and raised his scimitar to stike Petor down, but before he could, Petor hurled his knife right into the assassin's neck, and he fell to the ground, helpless. After finished the intruder, Petor chewed out his chief bodyguard, got another night watchman, and returned to bed.
With the defeat in Media Petor became struck with grief at his failure to accomplish the Mission that God had given him. He was saddened by this failure, plus the fact that he must attack again, even if it cost him all of his people. The bible tells him that he must obey the will of God without question. The Pope's rejection of his pleas for help dissillusioned Petor greatly. On the eve of his march back into Media for the slaughter, the Messenger of Heaven returned to him in a dream, which he remembered vividly.
"Petor," the Angel intoned, "God has another mission for you, in a far distant land. Jesus will return to earth soon, and only your people have proven themselves worthy of protecting and reising him." The angel continued, "The reason your enemies are so great, is that the devil has made his earthly home in Baghdad, and lent his demons to their cause. The Pope has sold his soul to Lucifer. You and your people are not to listen to the imp, but wait until a new Pope leads the flock. First you must raise a mighty army, Petor, so that you can bring destruction to the unfaithful.
Petor related his dream to his followers, and issued a warning to the world: "One hundred years from now, the Holy Father shall send his Son back to earth to cleanse it of the minions of Lucifer. Prepare yourself for the coming of Armegeddon and repent!"
Petor's son Lukan celebrated the birth of a son. The Otrargh Khan ally died, and his successor decided to leave the Liao. As if that wasn't bad enough, Petor was unable to gain any more allies on his trip back to Tabolsk. This was going to be harder than he thought.
The Abbasid Caliphate
Mu'hammid Al'rahi, Kaliphat Rasul Allah
Diplomacy None
Mu'hammid built QUITE a large number of additional troops to reinforce his battered army. Pireheram and Mu'hammid waited for the Liao to act. When the Liao didn't attack, they went back to Baghdad to get the new troops.
Mu'hammid wanted to hire the unbeatable general Pireheram as a permanent general of the empire, but the aged man died in his sleep one sunny afternoon. The next few years were uneventful.
Imam Al Muslim
Abrahm, Siadat Kuran, "The Sustainer"
Diplomacy Baghdad (ab), Mesopotamia (ne), Kraznovia (ca), Carhae (ab), Granada (mn), Madiera (ab), Andalusia (ca), Ad'diffah (ca), Mosaid (mn), Raja (ab)
Abrahm initiated a massive wave of religious sites. It seems that Allah smiled upon his efforts, because only one of them failed.
No Islamic sites are outside of the control of Medina.
The Fatimid Empire of Egypt
Jafan Amal, Guardian of the Holy Places, Emperor of Egypt.
Diplomacy None
Jafan Amal opened sea trade with Chola and Zimbabwe, and trans-Sahara trade with Tchad. He would have opened trade with Songhai as well, but the Tchad-controlled oases block that route.
Al-Uqsor, Al-Aqabah, and Al-Maraghah got bigger. Open for a Player.

The Eastern Roman Empire
Emperor Justin, Augustus of the Romans, Basileus of the Hellens, Supreme Among the Princes of Christendom, Equal of the Apostles, God's Own Anointed Vice-Gerent on Earth

Open for a Player.
The Polish Kingdom
Marko Brodzinski, King of Poland
Diplomacy Bavaria (ea), Pomern (a), Bohemia (ea), Moldavia (fa)
The heir Bram II found a wife in Pomern, which greatly assisted the talks there. The young couple produced two boys and a girl.
Marko sent Lord Wolfgang and the Duke of Galich off to slave raid a few Russian forest regions. He must have forgotten that now that he's a Civilized man, his reach is quite limited in wilderness areas. When the ally from Galich got back, he told Marko that Wolfgang decided to go his own way. Oh, well.
Polish diplomats did well again in most of their efforts, expanding the nation's influence considerably.
The port city Odessa now surrounds the fortress in Moldavia. At long last, the southern trade routes can now resume!

Mercenary Leaders | Gunther Schultz (M???) |
Denmark
Halfner, Imperator Danmark
Diplomacy Holland (fa)
Halfner rejoiced in the recovery of Holland. After decades of foreign control, the region has finally returned to its rightful owner. Other than that, he worked on internal matters.
Grand Duchy of Verona
Leonardo Maquina, Grand Duke of Verona, Defender of Italy, Chosen of Christ, Shepherd of the Faithful
Diplomacy Verona (un)
Going downhill fast. Verona left the kingdom, at Lombardy's persuasion. Open for a Player.
The Lombard Kingdom of Italy
Ludovico Orsini, Rex Sognari
Diplomacy Verona (un to Duchy of Verona), Swabia (a)
Ludovico sent a large diplomatic mission to steal Verona from the Duchy of Verona. The Lombards still have a lot of influence in the region, and they turned their backs on their Spanish liege. He then celebrated the births of a boy and three girls.
The Roman Catholic Papacy
Innocent V, Il Papa, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ
Diplomacy Burgundy (mn), Meissen (ne), Bochnia (ca), Lothian (ab)

Soloman II, King of Turquis, Champion of the True Faith, Lord of the Franks
Diplomacy Hainaut (a), Maine (t), Languedoc (t), Lorraine (fa)
Soloman II opened land trade with Denmark and Cordova. His daughter Catherine coordinated a census of the kingdom's populance.
In Lorraine, the peasants complained and raised hell until their lord agreed to reduce his ties to Paris. Apparently, they don't like Paris' influence in their region.
Monaco expanded.
K669, Thunder Lord, Khagan of the Khitan
Diplomacy None
K668 died, and his not-quite-teenage son 669 took over. The Tangut Khan remained loyal, but Connaught, Lienster, Lothian, and Munster all rebelled. Will K669 find the steering wheel and guide this nation toward greatness? Tune in next time...
Ummayad Caliphat Al Cordoba
Asad Nasir, Caliph al Cordoba, Infidels Bane
Diplomacy Gebel-al-Tarik (fa)
Gebel-al-Tarik agreed to a feudal alliance, but when Ali asked for more, they directed his attention to Table 2-22, Maximum Region Status by Terrain. Asad Nasir and his son Mustapha added more offspring to their unbelievably huge families. Each of them has a list of names and birthdays in his wallet because there are too many to remember.
A beautiful royal road now winds from New Castille over the mountains into Old Castille. Work continues on the road from there to Asturias.

The Algerian Caliphate
K691, "Zaban Nogreh", Lord of the Rif, Lion of Morocco, Sword of the Prophet
Diplomacy None
L691 decided that Sa'id al'Farad was a weak Caliph, and that L691 could do a better job by himself. So he took control of Zirid, Cheliff, Algeria, Kabilya, Tunisia, Sicily, and Sardinia away from Sa'id, and declared the Algerian Caliphate.
The cities of Tlemcen, Mahidia, and Caligari expanded. K691 advised Sa'id al'Farad to bend over and kiss his *ss goodbye, since he will soon get crushed by Algerian armies.
The Caliphate AlMoravid
Sa'id al'Farad, "Zaban Nogreh", Lord of the Rif, Lion of Morocco, Sword of the Prophet

Sa'id al'Farad sent his two lieutenants east with the army to guard the Mediterranean coastline. Unfortunately, they were not loyal, and L691 left the Caliphate, taking most of Al'Moravid with him.
New citizens streamed into Casablanca. Sa'id al'Farad has vowed to retake the rebellious regions.
The Songhai Herdsmen

Many regions rebelled: Adrar, Bir-el-Khazim, Terhazza, Araune, Walata, Senegal, Gambia, and Mossi. With the loss of the oases, trade with the northern coastal nations is less efficient.
Open for a Player.

Kinshasa rebelled due to distance. Open for a Player.
Great Zimbabwe
Lorkaunk, Shaka Zulu
Diplomacy None
Chunkulor died, and his son Lorkaunk took over as Shaka Zulu. Zimbabwe merchants tried to start sending their goods to the Fatimids, but their trade range is only 2, so only Fatimid merchants can make the trip. The imperial size is putting a real damper on the university, too.
Many infantry demobilized to help construct improvements in Delgado.

The Aztec Empire
Ometepec, God-Emperor, Divine Ruler of Mexico
Diplomacy Achi (a), Cuyutec (t), Maya (un)

Pucara got many new canals and paths.
