United States of Asia (Nihon)
Jenguku Tohiro, First Minister of the Diet
Diplomacy Koguryo (a)
Ozawa discovered that Nigata was already friendly. Owari tried to explore northeast of the Kurils, but a storm blew him hopelessly off course and he returned empty-handed. Mantap, Sikhote, Suifenhe, and Anshan were released from the Union. Toyama and Hokkaido were reduced to tributary.
In Toyama, ten thousand men labored to clear the land. With fire, axe, and saw, they cleared most of the trees in five years of backbreaking work. Now Toyama is cultivated.
The Kingdom of Mongolia
K000, Kucha Khan
Diplomacy None
All was well in northern Asia. Jasmir died of old age, and his son K000 took over at the age of six, with the help of General Khul.
Mao Cheng, Supreme Monarch of Lu'an
Diplomacy None
Mao Cheng hatched a plan to recover the rebel-held regions. He would get his Shensi and Ch'in allies to help him. The Dalai Lama sent a chunk of change. He assembled over twenty thousand infantry, and a few thousand siege engineers and light cavalry. The army proceeded south to Yen while Shensi and Ch'in gathered their forces. Mao Cheng was happy to find no defenses in Yen, but decent walls and a handful of sappers guarded the city of Yen-Ching. Before attacking, Mao Cheng announced that amnesty would be granted to anyone who left the rebellion and rejoined the original ruling House of Honan. No one took him up on his offer. Quickly tiring of the waiting, Mao Cheng ordered the immediate capture of Yen-Ching. The assault was short, and cost Mao Cheng only a few thousand troops because of his top-notch combat leadership. By the end of June 1026, Yen-Ching was his. Next, the army of Lu'an swept through Shangtung and its undefended city of Tsing'Dao. They then marched back through Yen to rendezvous with the Shensi army.
In the summer of 1027, the armies of Lu'an and Shensi converged on Hopei, the last region held by the Yen rebel faction. No troops guarded the region or the city, and Kaifeng's walls were not strong. As before, Mao Cheng offered amnesty to the rebel soldiers. Only a trickle of soldiers answered the call. During the assault, Qin Tianyou (the Shensi heir) was captured, then rescued hours later when the assault was over. Mao Cheng prepared to march on Honan, but there was some confusion about whether Qin Tianyou and the warrior princess Qin Boqing would bring the Shensi army along, or stay in Hopei. Mao Cheng thought they should come with him, while Qin Tianyou and Qin Boqing thought they should stay and guard Hopei. Mao Cheng didn't push the issue too hard, because he knew Che Teh was sending a big army.
And indeed the Ch'in army was a large one. An army about twice the size of Mao Cheng's showed up in Honan to join with the Lu'an army. Che Hua (the Ch'in heir) and the gifted General Dong Wan were happy to help Mao Cheng recover his former capital. Again the rebels hid behind city walls. Having learned of Mao's extraordinary battle savvy, Chaing Lu sent his assassins to take out Mao Cheng, but they couldn't get past the alert guards. But the assassins sent to kill Chaing Lu found their mark. After that, only the mediocre general L641 was left to lead the defense of Pienching. But the worst (or best, from Mao Cheng's point of view) was yet to come. The Lu'an Security Agency did a great job convincing the Honan soldiers to come over to the loyalist side. Around one third of them came into Mao Cheng's service before the assault. So the allies ended up taking only several thousand losses, even though they wiped out over twenty thousand rebel troops.
Mao Cheng was happy to recover most of the government, espionage, and the university from the rebellion.

Xanthi Empire of Xanadu
Palpatyn III, Grand Poobah of the Xanthi Zieterund, Rajah of the Rajputs
Diplomacy Avanti (a)
The silver-tongued Xorth joined Ramesevka in Avanti, and even though Xorth died an early death from a snake bite, they convinced the locals to ally themselves fully with Xanadu. Palpatyn III reduced Ajmer from a feudal ally to a non-paying tributary.
Another leg was added to the Royal Road system. It now connects from Kayal to Limu. Palpatyn snorted with derision when he heard of the new Abbasid road. "A feeble cartpath next to my highway," he quipped. His eyes would have popped out of his head if he saw the Incan highway. The aqueducts and sewers of Xanth were upgraded to make Xanth the cleanest city in the nation.
The Chola Mandalam
Hamari, Mandala Chola
Diplomacy Kakatiya (fa, rebelled), Chela (nt, rebelled), Vengi (fa)
Hamari conducted a census. Then he went to Sri Lanka to help the Seylan Raj in his conversion efforts. Fasyai was in Kakatiya, talking them into a feudal alliance, and Bayataska was in Chela, convincing them to join the kingdom.
Nefulasa (the Mandala Chola) was in Vengi, having just married the local Raj's daughter. Then Nefulasa died of malaria. Since there was no heir, all three lieutenants (Fasyai, Bayataska, and Hamari) rushed to Vengi to collect the army for themselves. They all arrived at the same time, and the troops had to choose sides. Although Hamari was the youngest of the three, he was also by far the most convincing and likable. So they join him. Hamari promptly had Fasyai and Bayataska executed for treason. Then he took the army to Pandya. Luckily, there were no leaders there, so the capital was open for him to move in and take over.
Kakatiya and Chela recoiled from the violence. A few ditches and roads improved the countryside in Chola.

Ali ben-Kharj made himself useful in Kara-Khitai and Bactria. Open for a Player.
The Abbasid Caliphate
First, Kaliphat Rasul Allah
Diplomacy None
Mahtaub finally noticed the teeming masses of unemployed and the huge pile of gold in the treasury. "I know," he said, "I'll build some stuff." And so he did. First, he ordered the construction of a highway to better control the western reaches of the empire. Workers cleared and leveled the ground. The layers were built up: first sand; second, flat, squared stones set in mortar; third, a layer of gravel set in clay; fourth, a layer of sand concrete. Finally, he sent off to Egypt for the finest limestone around, almost marble, to pave the entire road, all the way from Baghdad thru Kraznovia [obviously named by an U.S.-military type; it grates on me to type the word in an eleventh-century history] and Kirkuk to Antioch. But Mahtaub did not live to see the completion of his dream. His tired body finally quit a few years after construction began, and his son Ali had to oversee the completion. Ali was more than happy to see his dad kick off, because he was beginning to feel old himself. He was right. Ali died in 1030, and was succeeded by his eleven-year-old son, First. Kuwait rebelled.
But the new construction was not limited to the mighty highway. Kamizak, Kirkuk, Kraznovia, Antioch, and Aljaz all got bigger. And very many new canals now crisscross Hahmar.

The Varangian Empire of Kiev Rus
Piotyr Nechesik, The First Czar of Kiev Rus
Diplomacy Patzinak (fa)
Piotyr apologizes for the confusion: his capital did NOT move last turn; it is still in the city of Kiev.
Then he announced that the empire would henceforth be Roman Catholic. He gave his steppe regions the option of not converting. They were appreciative of his sensitivity. None of them converted. Of the non-steppe regions, only Daugava and Seversk rebelled. The rest (Kiev, Polotsk, Chernigov, Muscovy, Murom, and Mordva) are now Roman Catholic.
Several Kievan leaders travelled to Patzinak to discuss matters of alliance with the local khan. After years of negotiations, a feudal alliance was reached. Them Patzinakers don't listen too well to barbarian monotheists.

Baron Igor grabbed a few thousand troops and headed off to the northeast to do some slaving. While tramping through the forests, they came across several wild boars. One of them charged Igor, and before the nearest soldiers could stop it, Igor was skewered. Leaderless, the men drifted away into the woods. Some of them made it back to Poland.
Praha got bigger.

Diplomacy None
Things were pretty quiet in Verona.
The Lombard Kingdom of Italy
Ludovico Orsini, Rex Sognari
Diplomacy Swabia (t)
Diplomatic progress in Swabia was slow, because Nunzio offered Ludovico's hand in marriage, even though Ludovico was absent. The local duke said he'd prefer to actually see his daughter's prospective husband first. But at least trade can now resume to the northern nations.
In Tuscany, by the sea, a fortress surrounded by a city rose, clean and new, from the rocky beach. It is called Florence. More residents moved to Genoa and Milan.
The Roman Catholic Papacy
Innocent V, Il Papa, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ
Diplomacy None
The Vicar of Christ prayed for five years.
Soloman II, King of Turquis, Champion of the True Faith, Lord of the Franks
Diplomacy Lorraine (a), Provence (a)
Soloman decided that his kingdom needed more peasants with good, solid Turqish heritage. So, an army of almost thirty thousand horsemen descended upon Burgundy. Every last Frenchman was rounded up and thrown into slave pens. Soloman led the procession of Turqish colonists into Burgundy. Every village and farm got new residents. The Turqs put their captive Frenchmen to work building new paths and storm sewers. Then Soloman marched toward the English Channel and did the same thing in Ponthieu.
Bishop Verdi headed east, over hill and dale, chasing after the Liao horde. Soloman had ordered him to find them and get them to join the kingdom. But Verdi got sick and tired of tromping the endless miles, and decided not to come back.
A few young Turqs worked on the road from Paris to Nivernais.
Altan the Red-Handed, Thunder Lord, Khagan of the Khitan
Diplomacy Kingdom of Eire (nt)
Hearing of Soloman II's ideas on proper treatment of foreign speaking regions, Altan declared that some serious, big time enslavement needed to occur. The Tatar Khan started in Holland, working his way southwest. Altan and the Tangut Khan went after Mercia and Lancashire. Inconveniently, the Grim Reaper came to visit many of the elderly Khitan leaders.
The Tatar Khan enslaved Holland, bypassing Karnkorb, and populated the region with Tatar peasants. As soon as he went to Brabant, Karnkorb revolted, rejoining Denmark. Then the Tatar Khan died of old age. The horde's new boss decided to remain in the empire.
Altan and the Tangut Khan enslaved Mercia; then the Tangut Khan keeled over. The Tangut horde withdrew to Sussex to elect a successor. Without the Tangut colonists, Altan was unable to repopulate Mercia, and it reverted to forest. But he did enslave and recolonize Lancashire. The former residents of Mercia and Lancashire had the pleasure of beautifying Northumbria. The new khan of Tangut opted for a military-only alliance.
Turchuq travelled to Lienster to bring the Emerald Isle into the empire. He succeeded.
Bishop Kubli died before he could begin his work.
Kingdom of Eire
Roalf, Retired Defender of the Cross, Former High King of Eire
Diplomacy None
Altan's son Turchuq married Roalf's daughter, and Roalf turned his kingdom over to the Khitan.
Ummayad Caliphat Al Cordoba
Asad Nasir, Caliph al Cordoba, Infidels Bane
Diplomacy None
The Gebel-al-Tarik ally fell off a cliff in Catalonia and plummeted to his death. The new sheik adopted a much looser (non-paying tributary) relationship with Cordoba.
Still no attackers came into Iberia, so the defensive plans remained untested.
Asad Nasir ordered a new city. Settlers streamed into Portugal and built it around the port fortress there. It is called Lisbon. Work continued on the road to Bilbao.

George went to north toward Gefara. He trudged through mile after mile of burning desert, glad to have accurate maps of the oases where he could water his camels, chat with the few locals, and replentish his own waterskins. The weeks dragged on into months and years. George was never heard from again.

The soon-to-be-great port city of Borwaham was built on the Inhambane coast of Phalaborwa. The coastal regions to the northeast were wowed with glimpses of glory and gold. It's fun to be king!

The Sonoma Kingdom
Leaping Bird, King of Sonoma
Diplomacy None
Leaping Bird hung around in Mokelumne, watching the constructions crews adding to the metropolis. He went to his favorite lookout point to gaze over the ever-sprawling city. Soon his nation would possess the most impressive set of cities in the world! As he turned to leave, he lost his footing on the crumbling rock. He tumbled down the hillside and cracked his head open on the boulders at the bottom. His fourteen-year-old son is the new King of Sonoma.
Patwin received more improvements. Albion, Ursa Minoris, and Mokelumne are reaching sizes near that of Baghdad.
Anasazi Republic
Crawling Fox, Chief Executive of the High Desert
Diplomacy None
Sitting Wolf found that controlling Mescalero, Tonkawa, and Caddo from so far away, through the deserts and forests, is no mean feat. If only he had more gold and manpower, a few postal roads could be built. Crawling Fox won the election.
More of Tahue became North Amerind. Additional settlers streamed into Caddo, colonizing it to 1 Gpv. They also built a city, Naschitti, on the Lower Great Snake.
The Iroquois Nation
King Talon, Prime Chief of the Council
Diplomacy None
Unshakable in his determination to expand toward the icy northern seas, King Talon sent his best warrior, Blue Tide, to woo Gronland into the empire. It turned out Blue Tide was spectacularly disloyal, and he went to the Caribbean to spend the rest of his life soaking up sunshine.
King Talon also sent a column of settlers across Lake Erie into Tobacco, colonizing it to 1/10 NA. The city of Cahokia got more citizens.
The Aztec Empire
Ometepec, God-Emperor, Divine Ruler of Mexico
Diplomacy None
Like his predecessors, Ometepec felt a little cramped having the Mayans so close to his empire. Unlike his predecessors, he did something about it. Ometepec declared, "Let every man and boy old enough to throw a spear twenty man-lengths be mobilized. Raise a corps of engineers large enough to fill any moat or batter through any wall." And so it was done. Around thirty thousand spearmen, and an impressive siege train, gathered in Mitla. To bless the assembled army, a day of sacrifices was held at the city temple. A hundred maidens and two hundred llamas met their maker on the altar. Thus was victory assured.
The host marched east, led by Calliacatl and Evil Eye. They easily captured Popoluca, but bypassed Chiapa to save time. Chontal, Yucatec, the city Lucatec, and Maya were also largely undefended. Each was pacified in turn. Only Chichen Itza itself posed any challenge. But not much, as they were outnumbered ten to one, and without walls. Bravely, Cacaquatal led the doomed defense. They were crushed like bugs. Calliacatl knew his father would be pleased with the booty: forty transports, a few thousand slaves, a bit of the university, and a couple hundred trunks of gold.
The Mayan Astronomers
Cacaquatal, Former Priest-King of the Yucatan
Diplomacy None
Without warning, thirty-some thousand Aztec warriors crashed through the kingdom and captured the capital. Without a single remaining friendly region, the Mayan Astronomers ceased to exist as a nation.
The Andean Incan Empire
Anapa, Emperor of the Heavens
Diplomacy None
Anapa stayed in Inca, watching over his growing realm. While there, he furthered his line, with another son. His oldest son Pachamac got married and celebrated by having a couple baby boys of his own.
Manco Capac travelled south, gathering the extensive garrisons together. He stopped in Arica to guard the southern frontier. In 1030, he kicked the bucket, leaving the leaderless troops parked in Arica.
From Galapagos, Lloque Yupanqui gathered the northern garrisons and went to Chimu to watch the northern approaches.
A royal road nows cuts through the mountains from Jauja to Macchu Picchu. Every region in the empire is now connected by Anapa's mighty highway, by far the greatest in the world. From Cuzco, it takes no more than half a year to reach any region of his sprawling domain. New terraces and qanats improved maize production in Inca and Pucara.
Quiro Mapuche
Kniso, the Chosen
Diplomacy None
A huge noise woke Kniso. A stack of gold in his treasury had collapsed, killing two accountants. Kniso decided it was time to act. He spent a very impressive (unless you're the Dalai Lama) sum of cash. Aqueducts in N'Dru, irrigation canals in Mapuche and Poya, and the colonization of Guenakan (by the Atlantic Ocean) to 1/10 SA did the trick.
Kniso noticed that his twenty-three-year-old son was of age, and issued this statement: "My son, Marok, has proven himself worthy of being named my heir. As of this day, Marok will take his rightful place at my side, and Yuxan will become the crown prince of the nation. Yet let it be known that we give this title to Yuxan and his heirs as long as my line rules over this nation." Yuxan didn't think this was such a good deal, and he quit the royal service altogether.
Marok found himself a wife, and a baby boy was born to them. Torak sailed south from Guenakan and successfully explored the Malvinas islands.
Tilok must have drawn the short straw. His job was to sail north of Guenakan, along the entire eastern shoreline of the continent, and explore the unknown seas there and farther north and east. A loyal servant, he accepted his mission, and departed with a look of determination on his face. He was never seen again.
