LORDS OF THE EARTH
CAMPAIGN X
Turn #92 Industrial Stage One
1523-1525 Anno Domini Renaissance Era
Gamemaster: David Adams
Next Turn's Orders are due Sunday, April 21st, 2002
Quote of the month:
Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!
- Sir Walter Scott

ANNOUNCEMENTS

MaxTax: MaxTax is going into effect in Lords 10. Starting this turn at 2.25. It will decrease by .15 every turn until it reaches 1.25. This means that the maximum any region or city will garner is 1.25 x value, divided by all the hands grabbing at the pie.

Mercenary Brokerage: Section 5.5.3 says clearly that to bribe or counter-bribe a mercenary (leader or troupe) that a leader with gold must be present in the same region as the mercs. This does not break the mercenary brokerage rights - only effecting the actions at that time.

Cav Counts: Unless you see a note to the contrary anywhere, all cav counts are finished, both in the Americas and in Africa.

Aircraft Tech: Italy has it now. You can find all the tasty bits in the Rules Notes - pretty much just like Lords 1.

Building and Listing Cities: When you build, expand, or do anything with a city, were appropriate please list the region it's in. Just listing the city makes it difficult for me to locate on your stat sheet since they're all listed in alphabetical order by REGION name, not city name. Thanks!

MSP nightmares: If you are making EXTENSIVE changes to your MSP allocations, please list the current port the MSP is in.

Diplomacy: If you tell a leader to DP a region without any gp bonus, or additional time, or a marriage, he'd better be a GREAT diplomat if you expect anything better than a hostile reaction from the 'natives'. Your Charisma stat for Merchant/Religious/SE sites...

Homeland Build Zones: Yes, I actually use these rules. You should too!

Rules, HA!, what are they good for?: We've all got access to rulebooks people - and they're free! (ok - not the pretty printed version)

Battle Assistance: Lasts the whole turn, not just one battle.

3 YEAR TURNS: Lords 10 is in 3 year turns now for the next 27 or so turns. Your base tax rate is 60%. Even though the turns are shorter, projects like royal roads, bridges, cultivation still take 5 years per level - unless you have some kind of reason why it should take less time...

COLOR CODED NATION HEADERS: The Colors coded on each nation represents your technology level. Tech 1, 2, 3, & 4, Tech 5, Tech 6, Tech 7, Tech 8, Tech 9, Tech 10, and Tech 11. If you can't read it, select the text so that it's reversed.

LORDS 4 & 10 UNIT CONVERSION

  • Cavalry or Infantry (100 men = 1 point)
  • Siege (50 sappers = 1 point)
  • 5 siege towers, or catapults
  • All Ships (2 ships & 100 men = 1 point)
  • Cargo = MSP
  • NOTE: 4 MSP + 4GP = 1 HT
  • Field Forts (1 tower/trench with 50 men each)
  • Wall point (10 feet of wall ramparts and 50 men)
  • Artillery (2 guns or 1 mortar and assorted men)

  • RULES USED IN THIS GAME This campaign uses the ThroneWorld's 5th Edition Revised Rulebook (v.5.8.2) and the Renaissance Rules Supplement (v2.1.2). Also, I've made EXTENSIVE changes and clarification to these rules - all listed on the Rule Notes web page. These notes are added and tweaked every time I come across something that I think needs to be clarified or *gasp* changed.

OBTAINING THE 5TH EDITION REVISED RULEBOOK: This is just the rulebook you'll need to play in Lords of the Earth (Version 5.8). We have a copy of this rulebook available for FREE download at the ThroneWorld site.

    AFRICA

    West Africa

    THE AKA'MURRID EMIRATE OF FULANI
Mohammad II, Emir of the Fulani, The Philosopher-King of the Sahel
    Diplomacy: Niani(a) Kanuri(fa)
Mohammad discovered an inconsistency with the amount of gold Aethiopia delivered. He was prepared none the less, so Hausa received fewer improvements, while Susu was fully cultivated. Further moves toward apostasy were made by the Emir as well, with huge overtures toward the Coptics. Oyo was flooded, but nobody cared.

    THE SUPREMACY OF TOGO
    Oduduwa, Supreme Oba of Togo
    Diplomacy: Yoruba(ea) Ife(t)
Oduduwa continued talks with the Yorubans, finally achieving success. What was even more momentous to the Supremacy was the new leader gained in 1525.

    South Africa

    THE BANTU KINGS OF OKOYO
    Ogourke, Ba King
    Diplomacy: Uige(ea) Douala(c)
Ogourke took in the records of his vast expanses and found that with just a small expenditure, Lui and the homeland would be cultivated. He sent a couple diplomats north to Douala and started the cultivation project of Teke. He then set Omote free to reduce the paperwork from that jungle region.

    THE GREAT ZIMBABWE
Malachai, Chief of Zimbabwe, Holder of the Five Twin Jackal Chair
    Diplomacy: None
Malachai completed many of the projects he had set out for Zimbabwe, cultivating Banhine and Matopos, building a bridge across the Zambezi and a postal road through the passes to the capital.

    East Africa

    THE KRAKAS EMPIRE OF AETHIOPIA
Gobbu VII, Alem 'Elum, King of Aethiopia
    Diplomacy: Ghebel Gharib(t)
Gobbu built an evil fortress in Meroe, expanded half a dozen cities, and continued cultivation projects in the frontier regions. Admiral Minquat sailed west around the Cape to Swakop to unload a couple thousand cavalry to protect the new anchor port city of Akwila. With this conduit city, Gobbu is now able to support his West African holdings by sea, as well as by possibly hostile land.
The heir's new wife died during the pregnancy of their first child, while Gobbu had another daughter. Ambuti was highly successful in Ghebel Gharib.
Generals Basqu and Krestos with the mobile portion of the Imperial forces waded across the Benue River intent on taking the region of Igbo. With close to twenty thousand men, composed of heavy elite shock troops and artillery, Igbo was pacified quickly. Since the technical and numerical superiority was so great, the Aethiopians didn't even lose a man. Biatra had no walls, and so was also quickly assaulted and pacified. Missionaries were on hand to support the dismayed pagans.

    North Africa

    THE SULTANATE of IEST
Khalid ibn Abu al Arrod, Sultan of Mahidia
    Diplomacy: Ad'Diffah(ea)
Khalid completed the expenditure of resources towards the construction of the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Grand Mosque in Medina Karib. His son along with half of the diplomatic corp convinced Ad'Diffah of their importance to the realm. With it in the Sultanate the Iesti could once again trade with the Indians. The best that they could do was to form an economic alliance, since Ad'Diffah was firmly Monophysite.
Bashir was unsuccessful in Tobruk since it was a city fully controlled by the Krakas.

    THE ALMORAVID EMIRATE of ANDALUSIA
    Kadir, Emir as Sevilla
    Diplomacy: None
Kadir built another city near the Cape of Good Hope. Walvis Bay in Herero where the terrain was plowed and irrigation ditches were begun. Saladin had no luck with family matters, but impressive luck with investments, taking a hint from the Italians.
Admiral Kalid took his fleet of warships out into the ocean again, this time from the Cape into the Buengula Current. He arrived in Alagoas some 4 weeks later to witness the devastation that the plague had wrought. He picked up what supplies he could and then sailed south, intent on mapping out the infamous Cabral's Passage. He arrived back in Capetown on Christmas day, 1525.

CASABLANCA WESTERN HAWALA OVERSEAS MERCHANT PROTECTIVE COMPANY
    Rik, Merchant of Casablanca
    Diplomacy: Acre(AW)
    Capitalization: No Effect
Señor Rik supported all of his new mercenaries very well, inspiring loyalty among them all. He gave the former Dar al Islam navy of 1515 jobs within his own merchant marine, paying them well. New guards were set up at the gates of Casablanca to detain and interrogate any foreign leaders, other than Andalusian ones of course. Vic Torlazlo, a rising star bureaucrat, was named the heir under Rik.
El Ouie escaped to the safety of WHOMPCo's branch offices in Acre, defended by Mosheh ben Iaco's men, when he failed miserably at negotiations towards political influence. Samm was taken prisoner by the Kitsangan police in Fulani territory. Whether this had anything to do with the failed trade negotiations is still up in the air. Amazingly, Ogatti escaped a similar scrape in Arakos, but was wounded by a mob in Nicosea on Cyprus.

    EUROPE

    Western Europe

    THE SULTANATE OF ELSUT
Jaraah bin Zulfaqar, Regent of Ingiltarra, Sword of Sayyidina Ali
    Diplomacy: None
Abdullah died at the age of 60 in 1525. His trusted friend Jaraah took the throne in regency for Abdullah's 5 year old son.

    THE KINGDOM OF MORAY
Angus Og Mac Donald of Islay, ifth Lord of the Isles, Lord of Argyll and Kintyre, Earl of Ross, Captain of Clan Donald, Ri Innse Gall
    Diplomacy: None
Angus requested aid from the pope.

    THE NORMAN KINGDOM OF SAXONIA
Henry IV, King of the Saxons and of the Normans, Count of Blois
    Diplomacy: Brittany(ea)
Henry discovered that the Faranj had burnt the old port of Pau and had moved it's population inland for some reason, replacing it with a port fortress on the Bay of Biscay. Diplomat Oscar did not in fact die during his mission in Aragon, much to the Castillian's chagrin. Even so, they could not match Roland of Perigord's offer of marriage to the Aragon crown.
Gedric continued to assist his Imperialistic neighbor in the Cantons with the entire army subordinated to Wilhelm's man Orgul. Henry's reach was extended.

    THE DUCHY OF PERIGORD
    Roland, Duke of Perigord
    Diplomacy: Aragon(nt)
Roland married a beautiful Aragon princess who became the Duchess of Perigord upon Roderic's death in 1524.

    THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
Boniface X, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ, Servant of the Servants of God, Supreme Pontiff on the Universal Church
    Consecration: Poitou(ch) Gascony(ch) Pau(ch) Corsica(ch) Bastilica(ch) Westphalia(ch) Friesland(ch) Groningen(ch) Holland(ch) The Hague(ch) Flanders(ch) Bruges(ab) Rouen(ab) Cherbourg(ab) Tours(ch) Bergerac(ch) Carmac(ch) Bakony(ch) Podravina(ch) Dalmatia(ch) Cologne(ab) Bremen(ab) Jutland(ch) Avente(ch) Holstein(ch) Kiel(ch) Obodria(ch) Wiczin(ch) Merseberg(ch) Tyrol(ch) Trangau(ch) Zurich(ch) Lyonnais(ch) Sete(ch) Catalonia(ch)
Boniface surprised several of the heads of state by sending them gifts they didn't expect. None of the "tithe refunds" were recognized and so were lost, frittered away to the winds. Pretty soon, if Boniface continues to return the tithe monies, his tithe income will drop to nil. Bochnia was especially distressed, since the tithe is effecting their tax base.
Obviously not skilled at trade, Boniface directed that shipping be stripped from the Medici route and that new routes be set up with Saxonia, Perigord, and the Helvetica Empire. But there wasn't enough to go around, so shipping was only moved to the Ingiltarra route.
Expanding the reach of the Church was the main focus in 1523. Boniface personally visited with Abdulla Ralif before his death. He was at Roderic's side giving last rights in 1524 after consecrating new churches throughout the region.

The foundation for St. Peter's Basilica was placed in 1523.

         Brothers and Sisters,

We are at the dawn of a new day of peace and prosperity. Recently, we bestowed the title "Caesar" upon the King of Italy. There is another who has carried the legacy of the Caesars and of the Roman Empire since the days of Augustus. I speak of the Roman Emperor in Constantinople. He is also called Caesar, and rightly so. We are about to embark on an historic journey whereby the Eastern Orthodox religion may soon become one with us in name as well as in spirit. The combination will have attribute of both sects of Christianity, but the basic precept will remain, as it always has been, that of peace and love. Europe has seen more war and death than God ever intended for us. Let us take advantage of God's grace and see our neighbors as friends. Let us take Christ's words to heart and do unto others as we would have them do unto us.

A new basilica in Rome is under construction, using the finest artisans and architects in Christendom. It will be on a scale unlike any other place of worship before, and it's magnificence will be great, though pitiful when measured against the magnificence of our Lord and Savior, Jesus.

         Yours in Christ,

         Boniface X

    THE ARLES EMPIRE OF ITALIA
Rolfo II, Rex Lagobardum, Imperator Occidental Romani, Defensor Christos
    Diplomacy: Savoy(a)
Rolfo expanded Merano and Pavia while repairing some of the damage from the flooded Po River. Rolfo successfully ripped off most of the Medici treasury, recovering most of what they stole from him the previous year. Later he was embarrassed to acknowledge to the Pope that he indeed did attempt to raise the national religious strength, thus reducing the Papal effectiveness.
Returning from the Helvetican wars, Rolfo took the experience gained to train his men, forming a unit of close to twenty thousand pure heavy elites. Lord Luigi took up a post in Savoy as the new feudal lord, while Boriga died on the voyage to Ciboney with a similar goal. Lord Augamondo felt that he was supposed to be the Feudal Lord of Savoy...

    THE MEDICI SYNDICATE
    Cosimo d'Medici, Guildmaster of Medici
    Diplomacy: Brittany(EA)
    Capitalization: None
Cosimo spent the years rotting in a Saxonia prison. Bookkeepers paid Italy for the routes Medici runs for them.

    THE EMPIRE OF HELVETICA
Wilhelm Kemmelstim, Grand Doge of Helvetica
    Diplomacy: Switzerland(c) Nordgau(ea)
Wilhelm provided lip service to starting the process of constitutional reform. He talked about organizing the lords into a house to protect their rights and voice, and for the people to be given a parliament to speak on matters by towns and regions, both allowed to advise the Doge. All the while he was crushing the Republic which had been born of his oppressive rule. To this end he allowed just about every Imperialistic neighbor free passage through the Empire to assist him. It's no wonder then that Republican spies were quite busy behind the scenes and within the ranks of the imperial government. When a chance came to snatch a gold shipment bound for the WHOMPCO mercenaries, the republican agents were ready. The Emperor was outraged when he learned of the theft. "You, knave. Yes you! Didn't you tell me that the gold transfer had been made?" "Sire it was made, but the merchants say they never received it. Apparently it was not their man that we gave the gold to.... No please Sire, it's not my fault.... Aie!"
Word of the theft reached Bonoque de Samanigo when he was in Tyrol preparing to march the combined merc forces of the Mediterranean and North European theaters into Bavaria to assist the imperial assault on the republicans in Munich. A stolen gold shipment meant no hazard pay for the men, and what was worse no bonus for Bonoque! Well it was just too bad for those imperial troops, Bonoque kind of liked some of those guys, but there was no way he was going to let his boys get slaughtered with the Helveticans and Romans in a nasty assault when the client was a deadbeat who could not keep track of his own money, Emperor or not. Bonoque knew he needed to get his lads out of the war zone and fast. After a quick look at a map he knew what he would do. At a place where the Munich road takes a sharp turn to the left he led his mercenary army to the right instead, and set off with his troops overland through the alpine back country. Crossing a high mountain pass into Carinthia, Bonoque pushed on through Podravina until he reached the relative safety of the neutral region of Alfold where he made camp and waited. Ibrahim ibn Jacob and Mosheh ben Iaco likewise put a halt to their plans to assist the Imperial cause, and instead undertook contingency orders to reorganize the force structures of the various mercenary corps.
Wilhelm expected that the government would devolve to his grandson, who is the heir to the Republic which he was destroying. Otto, appointed and current heir to the throne of the Helvetica Empire was not please to hear this, because he had wanted his own son to rule after him, one of the dynastic perks of being appointed heir to a large Empire.

         Battle of Munich 1523
Saxonia's General Gedric with close to 15,000 men arrived in Bavaria in the summer of 1523. Combined with the Roman forces and Otto's own men to screen, the assault of Munich was begun. With overwhelming support from the Saxonians, Otto deferred to their siege skills and the city fell on the first run, the massive mortar volley smashing the walls to bits. The cavalry took the brunt of the losses, wishing they weren't even in the fray. After the battle, Otto destroyed all functions of the Republic while half of the Roman army departed the field.
Commander Funke tromped into Switzerland to see the walls of Zurich. Otto continued on into Nordgau to conduct diplomacy. With the Saxonian forces, Herr Orgul moved on to pacify Thuringia, assaulting Murke afterwards. Herr Flieschenhaker and Von Einem moved on Austria and the small set of resistance in Bohemia, finally hitting Meissen and assaulting Berlin in 1525.

    THE REPUBLIC OF HELVETICA
Lord Johan Handhahn, Constitutional Monarch of Helvetica, Regent of Reinhold
    Diplomacy: None
Johan and his partners in crime were captured at Munich. In 1525 Johan died in prison, a martyr for all Helvetican idealists. [See Battle of Munich]

    THE NORDIK KINGDOM OF THAERY
Maxim (III) Goldnose, King of the Danes
    Diplomacy: None
Kjel returned with the army to Maxim in Jutland. Economic development was all the rage as Avente, Kobenhaven, Bremen, Liege, The Hague, Kiel, and Groningen were expanded. Luckily Sven Gamat Viol didn't have to operate at sea, since several bad storms made it look like he would have lost much of his fleet. Olf counteracted the bad job that Erland was doing.

    Eastern Europe

    THE GRAND DUCHY OF CRACOW
Stashu II, Blackjack Duke of Cracow, the King of Polka
    Diplomacy: Bialowesa(fa)
Lord Benny was the name of the idiot administrator who Lord Iven worked to offset. Fortunately the harvest was as expected.
Stashu himself led more than twenty five thousand men and assorted guns through the rebellious Sandomir, Kuyavia, Kassubia and finally Obodria in 1525. Pulling the artillery up to the walls of Wiczin was the best he could do though, as the end of 1525 seemed to take him by surprise.
Lord Edward took ten thousand horse across the Carpathians to force some tribute from the steppe denizens within it. He was wounded in the first foray, which cut his trip shorter than he had planned.
Lord Jocko too took more than twelve thousand men and guns into Ozu to support the port fortress at Krasnik. Then he moved on to Kiev, another strategically important region and city. The small walls of Kiev were blown apart spectacularly. He took Lyubbech and ended at Christmastime outside the walls of Gomel.

    THE KINGDOM OF THE BALTS
Boris, King of Baltica, Prince of Novgorod
    Diplomacy: None
Lord Mikhail was sent to Daugava to take it as his fief. It must have been a cruel joke played on him, because Daugava wasn't pacified. Commander Ivan was stranded at Saratov without a fleet, the one that was supposed to be built there but could not because of the distance to the capital was too great.
"During the last couple of years I have sent overtures to the Khan of the Dihaj seeking friendly relations and peaceful co-existence and trade between our nations. And the securing of our mutual border. The Khan assured us that this was his wish as well. So how do we explain the Dihaj agents we captured and killed trying to rob our treasury? We sought peace and the Dihaj sought war. So be it. Send the Royal Army south." Along with the tax collectors, the brute squad was able to round up another six thousand men. He also sent some grain to the Empire.

         Battle of Don 1524
Dmitri, Crown Prince of Baltica, marched south with more than forty thousand men, horse, and cannon. Near the end of 1524 he crossed into Don to hit the waiting forces of Chevak II. The heavy elite forces and superior technology spelled doom for the Khan's forces. Fate would seem to smile on Chevak though because it was at that time that Dmitri heard the news of his father's death...
Boris, Admiral of the BRN was first to hear that Rurik had died. Reacting to naval invasions from the north, he quickly sailed to the homeland at Ilmen and personally took the home guard. Kirivich and Pskov, Polotsk, Prussia, Reval, Suzdal, Tver and Vitebsk, and Viatka revolted.

THE KINGDOM OF THE BALTS - Peter Splinter
Peter, King of Baltica, Prince of Novgorod
    Diplomacy: None
Dmitri was assisted by General Peter during the Dihaj battles, trusted as a close friend. As the army prepared to return home, Peter announced that apparently Dihaj assassins had killed Dmitri during the night and that Peter now would lead them home on a forced march to defend the honor that was Rurik's dynasty. They made it as far as Kaluga.

THE KINGDOM OF THE BALTS - Ivan Splinter
Ivan, King of Baltica, Prince of Novgorod
    Diplomacy: None
Upon hearing that Dmitri was dead, Commander Ivan in Saratov gained the allegiance of Boyar Kubishev to take his two thousand men to the capital, hopefully to claim the throne in Rurik's name. They made it as far as Kalinin.

    THE DIHAJ KHANAT
    Battah, Mighty Servant of Allah
    Diplomacy: None
Chevak knew something bad was coming, his advanced couriers informing him of a large army marching through the northern wilderness. He put Makki and Dhu Nun in charge of the defenses. [See Battle of Don] Chevak stepped down to take a Prince position when Battah came of age. Late in 1525 the Tara Horde raided Vabol.

THE ROMAN EMPIRE - Phormion Dynasty
Ilias Phormio, Imperator Romanus, Basileus of Constantinople
    Diplomacy: None
Ilias continued to support foreign wars. [See Battle of Tyrol] It was revealed that the Black Tower cult was in Heraclea. Erasmus and Cyrano returned from the Helvetican Wars with more than twelve thousand men, leaving Christos and Myron with an equal number to continue. Christos died at the age of 64 while screening Munich.
Erasmus came home to pick up a fleet and was commanded to explore the seas to the northwest of Hesperia. While he was successful at mapping the inter island route to the Faeroes, he did lose 8 ships of his fleet in a storm prior to reaching his port in the Orkneys.
Naubolus and Kosmo ferried Galerius to Bithnia to continue fighting. Near the end of 1523, Galerius hit Cilicia with more than ten thousand horse, men, and elite artillery. It was easily taken and then Galerius set up an active siege on Adana. Cyrano met up with Galerius in early 1525, having traveled from the middle of Europe, his leadership much in demand. Galerius had just taken over Aleppo and was about to beseige Antioch. Cyrano's mortar reduced Antioch's walls in little time. Cyrano was able to pacify Lebanon before winter set in.

    ASIA

    The Middle East

    THE DABBAGH KINGDOM
    Kabeer al-Waliy, the homeless wanderer
    Diplomacy: None
Kabeer attempted to hire Mosheh to lead the evacuation of Antioch, but Mosheh had other obligations. Kabeer supported Hammad Abu-Hassan of the Burning Sword to the bitter end. [See Battle of Iraq]

    THE DAR AL ISLAM EMIRATE
    Suleiman, Emir of Baghdad
    Diplomacy: None
Trade was reopened with the Ciao Zhong Guo along the silk route, since the Diyalans lost interest in blocking it. Government expanded far beyond the needs of the small Emirate.
In Raqqah, Mehmed's men uncovered a huge train of wagons apparently filled with barrels of alcohol, tasty Tokay wine from the vineyards of Hungary which is very strong and not for the faint-hearted. The Emirate soldiers captured the wagons for Mehmed to investigate, hoping he would soon pass it all around. When he came over to check it out someone tipped a candle into one of the wagons in the train, which caused the contents to explode, as it would seem that the wine was not the only thing in the caravan. Mostly it was filled with hidden gunpowder and rusty nails! Mehmed was protected by his bodyguards to some degree, but still ended up with an eye put out and other less serious wounds. But combined with his wounds from 4 years earlier it was too much. A sub-commander took Mehmed's orders to return the army to Iraq via Arbiliq. Unlike the famed Mehmed though, he had a difficult time managing so many troops. He still made it to Iraq before the Sword attacked. [See Battle of Iraq]

THE SECRET EMPIRE OF THE BURNING SWORD
Hammad Abu-Hassan, Keeper of Secrets, Master of Lies
    Diplomacy: None
Hammad was wounded by assassins in the employ of Dar al Islam.

         Battle of Iraq 1523
The Damascus army was on the move, striking at Iraq from across the Euphrates. Aviz, Hammad's appointed successor took the Sword's infantry and artillery along with the Kabeer of the Dabbagh south into Iraq. With a combined force of more than thirty thousand men, not counting Hammad's twenty-eight thousand cavalry since they were still with Hammad, the Sword met Suleiman's hundred thousand on the plains of Iraq.
The clash was fantastic, with the Burning Sword forces blocked and harried at every turn. For the Dar al Islam forces, Nuradin was killed and Mehmed's replacement was wounded, but only three thousand men were lost. For the Burning Sword, losses were staggering, since Sulieman's elite cavalry pursued them from the region. The Damascus contingency fled the field, vowing never to return.
Hammad felt no further effects of the famine, since a large fleet from the east dropped off several tons of food at Homs in Khuzestan, sailed up the Tigris unopposed. A new general was pulled into the ranks in 1525.

    LAHILLA PRIMACY OF ISLAM

AS SHIRKI AL BAHRI AL BASRA (SBB)
Abdulla Noir, Kalifat Rasul Allah, Captain General of the Basra Overseas Trade Company
    Capitalization: None
Mustafa died wishing he could do something. Other leaders were on some mafioso's hit list, as one was wounded and another died. Oh wait, he was already dead. Sloppy work though, as meatball and cilantro sandwiches where left at the crime scenes.

    Persia & Central Asia

    THE BOGAZGOL HORDE
Bogz, Grand Khan of the Desert, Destroyer of Civilization
    Diplomacy: None
The Bogz was intent on taking cultivated lands. He rode through Arlan and into Gurgan in 1523. Ufandin of the Ghorid was there to oppose him, but being outnumbered 8 to 1 it was over quickly. The horde continued on to Tabaristan after leaving a tribe behind in Gurgan. Port Alamut without walls fell easily as well. With this kind of success, the Khan was happy.

    THE GHORID SULTANATE OF AFGHANISTAN
    Omar II, Sultan of Afghans
    Diplomacy: None
Omar continued his investments and was annoyed by hordes.

    THE TARA HORDE
Batu, Grand Khan of the Steppes, Destroyer of Civilization
    Diplomacy: Karluk(nt) Frunze(a) Ishikotrau(nt) Chuguchak(nt) Ayaguz(a) Ryatka(nt) Ob(f) Siber(nt) Emba(f)
Batu headed south again into Frunze looking for more nomads to join his cause. They allied and assisted his raids on Kokhand and Kuldja, the later permanently reducing Kuldja's revenue until Omar can colonize it.
Batu moved on to ally with the Ayaguz horde and then absorb the Ob hordes. Finally he absorbed the impressive Emba horde and raided Vabol. Vabol, a feudal ally of the Dihaj, was in Don reacting to the Baltic invasion at the time, so the raid met with no defenses.
Aral'sk, Surhandar, Kyzl-Kum, and Uzbek threw off their free passage status at the end of 1525.

    India

    THE HARAYUK RAJPUT EMPIRE
Rupika Chandravara, Khan of Khans, Master of Kaunaj
    Diplomacy: Multan(nt)
Rupika built field forts like it was going out of style, setting them in every single northern province and a couple southern ones as well. Royal road projects received continued funding as well as cultivation programs in the newly annexed Manipur. He then released Jats from it's feudal obligations and turned Kachin over to the Hidden Dragon, thus pulling the Empire to more manageable levels. Government expanded while he continued to rule and have children, another daughter in the fall of 1524.
Just as the Emperor was releasing Jats, reports were coming in that gold had been discovered in the desert. A rush of settlers, merchants, and workers for the mines showed up in Rajtaj.
Achyuta Kamakshi was hired to defend Kuru from any attacks. Missionaries gained a foothold in Kamarupa just as the region was pulling diplomatic strings, refusing to pay some of their taxes. A similar situation took shape in Nadavaria across the border in the Chalukya Kingdom.
While Rupika handled all the paperwork, General Vijani, along with Balu and Narasimha, was leading about six thousand men across the river into the wilderness of Sagaing. The bridge across the Irrawaddy had been washed away several years earlier, so the royal roads were almost useless. Defenders from Poppy Blossom joined the defense of the region, since they had no walls to speak of. Victorious, the Harayuks returned to Assam with improved cavalry and artillery quality.

    THE CHALUKYA KINGDOM OF BANAVASI
Ekoram-varman, Maharaja in Banavasi, Yogi of the Maldives
    Diplomacy: None
Harshana did little. Somebody nudged him and he fell over. His son Ekoram who had been ruling for the past 6 years took the throne. There was some concerns about the large force of marines left unattended in Jaipur. The Nadavarians did stop paying taxes, not able to take being ruled by such fundamentalist Hindu's as the Ekoram-Varmans.

    South-East Asia

THE DAI VIET EXILE KINGDOM OF MONPHU
    Phan Jainan, Wang Dai Viet
    Diplomacy: None
With walls around White Mountain, the people felt they could fend for themselves better than the Wang Dai. It took the national guard to stop them. Phan had to put down a rebellion in the capital itself as Rajput spies and terrorist further reduced the Dai Viet intel capabilities. Messages were sent to Kong Asuang, begging for support.

    THE MIET-SI EMPIRE OF ANGKOR
    Ne Sutak, Emperor of AngKor
    Diplomacy: None
A diplomat from the tiny kingdom of Mon was almost captured attempting diplomacy in the pacified region of Thaton. General Ne Sutak disbanded the fishing and merchant fleets, and mass conscripted to build fortifications against attacks that were surely coming. Blood curdling screams, cut short too soon alerted the palace guard to Sutak's bed chamber, there to find his mutilated body. The entire army fell into the hands of General Chesdabodin. His raw charisma easily quelled any mutinous reactions in his men. Word soon came of an invading force from the north. See Tonking
After successfully beating off the Tonking, Chesdabodin discovered that he was being attacked from the south as well! Luckily and for some unknown reasons the two enemies didn't attack at the same time, and so he had time to return to defend his homeland. See Hidden Dragon

IL SINDACATO GRANDE ORIENTALE COMMÉRCIO (Republic of Portale D'Oro)
Don Santino Carpachi, Il Doge della Portale D'Oro
Diplomacy: None that you know about
    Capitalization: Aseb(mf)
Don Santino converted a huge amount of merchant shipping into heavy transports and sent them on their way to the west filled with troops and food. He discovered that some interlopers were trying to learn his trade secrets. The rest of his time was spent, along with the rest of his un charismatic crew, attempting to set up shop in various cities without bribes or very much time getting to know the locals. In places where he needed a specific amount of labor, he left it to the winds of chance, posting ads on the street corner, hoping crews would show up.
In other news, Don Santino sent food along with his assassins in case they got hungry stalking their prey. Cadoni was literally sent up the river, the Irrawaddy River, without any gold for the agents he was tasked with setting up. When asked to comment, the Italian Boss said "Shadduppa yo face!"

    THE VIET VICEROYALTY OF MAKASSAR
    Zhen Xiao, Viceroy of Makassar
    Diplomacy: None
Zhen Xiao relaxed as a normal harvest made his people happy.

    China

    THE KINGDOM OF TONGKING
    Vhoi Tien, Wang Tong King
Diplomacy: At the point of our swiftly spinning swords!
Vhoi finished up the bridge rebuilding projects around the Empire. The war took it's toll on the governing body, so Muy Tak was put on Admin duties - he seemed well equipped. He was informed that it would take a bit more gold to hire Lun Ang Chhoub, but the rest of the mercenaries showed up to work for Bin Ak out of the ruins of Pakxe. They marched on Surin across the Mekong in 1523 with about fourteen thousand men.
General Chesdabodin was prepared for an invasion, and when reports from Surin reached him, his fortifications slowed the enemy while he brought in the fleet to cut off Bin Ak's supply lines. When the retreat horns were blown, Bin Ak was wounded while Tongking's forces where cut down like fish in a barrel.

    THE MAHIYANA BUDDHIST MISSION
Kong Asuang, 2nd Host of the Longevity Buddha
    Consecration: Jao(ca) Pa-Artu(ch) Kaifeng(mn)
Kong was unsuccessful at maintaining the controversial internal influence of Mahiyana Buddhism. This didn't stop him from increasing influence in Ciao Zhong Guo, or the Hidden Dragon of Chekiang. Missionaries were sent up to Parhae as well.
Guchi was assigned the task of consecrating the Jao Cathedral. If it weren't for the assistance of Huang Fulao the achievement would have been for naught. His earthly mission complete, Guchi died in 1524.
Tsing Chu made a pilgrimage to Lin'an, the golden city of the Hidden Dragon to exact the Mission's first tithe. His earthly mission complete, Tsing Chu died in 1525. I guess you only get longevity if you're the Primate himself.

    THE HIDDEN DRAGON OF CHEKIANG
Quan Gui, Celestial Emperor of Chekiang
    Diplomacy: None
The Imperial Library as well as the Celestial Observatory were both completed in 1524. Many people remarked that the Chekiang now has a place to store the ancient documents proving that the Chinese were the first to circumnavigate the world. The cultivation project in Hengshan was finally completed.
Shan Feng and Suma Ch'ien headed out of Dukou with a couple hundred elite light cavalry to ride into the Harayuk Rajput Empire. They carried large quantities of gold, tea, and silk. Without any word from Rupika Chandravara, the caravan was detained in Gauhati.
Wang An loaded up his newly built transports and sailed out of Kwangchou. He met up with Suma K'uang and transferred all land forces to him. Jak Chan then moved out to take possession of Kachin from the Harayuk. With more than 15,000 mixed forces and a large fleet to support them, the Hidden Dragon marched on Khemer. Agents were sent into the field ahead of the warriors. Chesdabodin was unable to control his men with fear of the approaching battle spurring them to insurrection and open mutiny. He was killed in the mayhem, another king dead. Lieutenant Chulalongkorn gladly turned his back on the future of the Miet-si, and since there wasn't anything else to revolt, he turned over the aspects of government to the two Chekiang men.
Wang An quickly sailed over to Kedah near the end of 1525 to arrange for the transfer of tributary status from ISGOC.

    THE CIAO ZHONG CHINESE EMPIRE
Fei Pi, The Noble, King of the Northern Prefectures
    Diplomacy: Shangtung(nt) Chinao(nt) Shan'Si(nt) Tai'Yuan(c) Liaoyang(t)
Fei Pi initiated three new intensive cultivation projects in the Yellow River plain, added to the government, then moved the Empire's fifty thousand, mostly elite forces, including better quality artillery, to Shensi to parley with Toghril Khan. Observers were heard to exclaim that the crates of gold took over two hours to transfer to the Horde before it moved off to the south into the mountains above Chinling. Wiling went from the smelliest city to the cleanest with a wave of the Emperor's pen.

    THE ANGORA HORDE
Toghril Khan, The Fuzzy, Khan of the North
    Diplomacy: None
Toghril headed south through Gaxung-Nür into Lob Nor, where he faced a large angry horde under an extremely charismatic leader. The Lob Nor foolishly decided to fight Toghril, and then immediately allied with him. The Angora then moved into Tsingpeng to meet Ciao Zhong guides.

Showa I, 89th Emperor of Nihon, Descendent of Amaterasu

General Nibunos took his four thousand men into Erhos to extract tribute from them. A much better diplomat than military commander, Nibunos was surprised to find that the Erhos were even worse. He died in 1525, leaving the entire Vakas army in the pacified wilderness under a sub-commander.

    THE COLONY OF NYDANIA
Harold III, Konik von Nydanland, Emperor of Nydania
    Diplomacy: Yuma(nt)
The ranking Prelate of the Church met with the Regent, Styrbjorn, following the untimely death of the well-respected Hamlet II. The Prelate, being in an unusually politic mood, managed, so he thought, to keep from his face his pleasure at what he believed to be God's hand in removing the late King, whose dedication to the Church the Bishop had long doubted. "Another near-Pagan sent to his deserved fate" was the kindest thought the Churchman had.
The Regent was more observant than the Bishop thought, and knew exactly what the Purple-robe was thinking, while being skilled enough himself not to let the Bishop realize this in turn. He gave polite, respectful replies to all that he heard, until the Bishop suggested (nearly commanded) that the minor Heir be placed in the care of the Church, for education and instruction for the two years until his majority. The Regent's reply was neither polite nor positive. "The young Prince will not be a Priest but a King. He will learn the things a King must know, which are not the things of a Priest. He will be, by the will of God, Ruler of this land, not its Shepherd. You may go...now."
As the Bishop left, the Regent muttered, "Did you truly believe that I, who could have had the Crown myself, for the stretching of a hand for it, would betray my rightful sovereign to your rule?" Obviously Roman Catholicism slipped a peg or two among the nobles.
In 1525 Styrbjorn stepped down as Regent for the coronation of Harold III.

In 1525, Corn Flower died. Since his son had already died from the plague, the empire was left in the hands of Corn's younger brothers Goldenrod and Hyacinth.
