CAMPAIGN TEN

Turn #85

Industrial Stage One: Renaissance

1500 Anno Domini

Next Turn’s Orders Due: Friday, July 25th, 1997.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

If you haven’t already heard, you have a new Gamemaster, Scott Hagen. I’ve communicated with many of you already and hope to get the chance to talk with more of you in the future.

I’m going to keep things status quo for a while. I just don’t think making wholesale changes right away would be conducive to the continuity of this game, even if things have been done wrong. For example, I have heard that the ISI calculations are not accurate.

An exception: no hunting for tech 4 nations and above. If you hunted this turn I gave you 1 NFP per attempt.

We are going to 3 year turns at turn 100(You all know what that means).

I had no say on what credit was put into you LX accounts. If Thad was suppose to do something that isn’t reflected in your account balance, you need to take it up with him.

I didn’t drop anyone no matter how low their account has gotten. This won’t hold true this next turn.

As user friendly as you can make your turns would be appreciated. If I can’t read your handwriting or understand your orders, I will make my best guess as to want you mean or want. Also make sure that your expenditures are accurate, several of you made mistakes and tried to spend with resources you didn’t have.

A note on cheating: a certain amount of trust is important among the players and how they fill out their turns. If I feel someone is cheating, I will not hesitate to remove them from the game.

Halal convinced the Yemenis to join the Iestis expanding the empires already significant boundaries. He also oversaw the construction of the port of Sanaa on the Bab-Al-Mandab.

Muhammed wasted time backtracking from the Azores picking up Mostafa and Akbar in Morocco. The three amigos had difficulties after a brief pit stop in Mawran. It seems they were given an incomplete set of rutters that didn’t show where they should turn north toward the Orinoco Sea instead of continuing to the Suriname Sea.

"Where the hell is this island we’re suppose to settle anyway," said the testy, Iesti, Akbar. Annoyed, Muhammed had him thrown to the sharks proving that he had hefty Iesti testis. None of this mattered as most of the supplies and a few ships had been lost in a storm.

In other news, the university was significantly invested in, Malaga expanded, Kabilya went cultivated, a port fortress was built in Misr on the Med, and Khalid had a daughter.

The Iest are proud to announce that they are beginning construction on Necho’s canal. They welcome all inqueries and offers of support and maintenence.

Kadir, Emir as Sevilla

DIPLOMACY: Carib(c)

On a spring day as the Emir Kadir was riding through Sevilla and visiting with his subjects he noticed that there were quite a few bills posted reading, "Visit Ahmmad’s Pottery Emporium."

"Ahmmad must be doing well for himself to have so many scribes to copy all these bills," thought the Emir. The farther the Emirrode the more of the signs he saw. He also noticed that they all seemed to written by the same scribe. "Why, I must hire this prolific scribe," thought the Emir and off he rode to Ahmmad’s.

"Where is this amazing scribe you’re hiding!" said the Emir as he enter the small shop.

"Scribe?" replied Ahmmad, "I don’t employ a scribe."

The Emir was flabbergasted, "Well then how do you make so many of those bills?"

"I’ll show you," and Ahmmad reached behind him and grabbed a clay jar hat had the letter "b" stamped into it. Beside it were jars with all the letters of the alphabet stamped into them. Inside the jar, he showed the king, were little squares of pottery each with a reverse of the letter "b" raised on one side. "I take these and place them backwards into this wooden frame I had made over at Abdul’s Carpentry Shop, and lock them in with these clamps I had made over at Aziz’s Smithy, roll some ink over it, press on a sheet of vellum and," he peeled up the vellum, "Vwal-la!"

The Emir fired half his scribes and had the rest retrained as printers.

Turfail explored the currents between South Africa and Green Arabia.

Nezzail and Al Humbil sailed all the way to Maya and asked for an audience with the Oazaca King. Nezzail died of impatience.

Nakbar was able to make a little head way with the Caribs; must have been his big boat.

Zifram was lost at sea.

Kalid also was lost at sea.

Muhammed sailed around and finally landed in Bermuda where he drop off a few infantry. "I claim this land in the name of Allah for the people of Andalus," he said and sailed off.

When it became know that these brigands were paid agents of their own government, the regions rebelled. Robert and 6500 elite knights were ready. It took two months to pacify the locals and then he had taken enough losses not to be able to carry out the relocation plans for fear of inciting another uprising. In Lyonnais, the expected infantry never arrived, so when rebellion came all Peter could do was flee.

Oscar had fun in the Hebrides. They were part of an another empire already. "Gee, maybe Henry could have checked with some of our neighbors before sending us out on so many wild goose chases."

Rolfo ii, came of age, got married, and tried to have children. His father must have forgot to tell him about the birds and bees.

Guarnual and Cotto sail back home.

The Pope and three lietenants travelled extensively though Europe attempting to found abbeys. While the lietenants all had some limited success, Sixtus proved relatively influencial. Even so, it was obvious that Roman Catholism lacked the clout it once weilded, and it remains to be seen if it will regain what it once was or if something else will rise to take it’s place.

In the summer of 1497, noted artist Leonardo Da Vinci finished The Last Supper in Pavia. When questioned on why the representation of Judas looked remarkably like King Rolfo he smiled and shrugged, "Gee, I hadn’t noticed."

"Just leave us poor folk alone."

The Dihaj successfully stole technology from the sleepy Scythians. They snuck in when the Romans weren’t looking.

Kuban went cultivated and the port city of Saykhin was built in Urkel, land of annoying little sitcom stars.

A couple of leaders seached for signs of cultic influence to no avail.

The big Burma backstab fell apart because of a few dominos in the chain that didn’t work out as planned. Don Marco’s call for mass conscription went unheeded. He arrived back in Kwa disappointed and with large loan to pay back.

Sancho Aurolli sailed around in Japanese waters after trying to establish a couple a factors in Dai Viet land to no avail. Other executives had some success overcoming religious, language, and cultural barriers, and some empires reniged on promises made. Just who can you trust.

(The REALM of BURMA)-RIP

The Burmese successfully purged their government of all infiltrations. This didn’t help as Thurlyazi was assasinated.

The Burmese handed over all external trade to the SGOC and built them some ships as well. Well, the sindacate must have know what was going on because instead of useing the ships to further the interests of the Burmese, they parked them in the harbor at Pendash. When the Vietnamese invaded Siam, they took advantage of the situation which was obviously, even at such an early stage, before any actual fighting, going to go against the Pagan people to offer bribes to the government administrators, military, and even the merchant shipping. When a portion of the military took them up on the offer, the former Burmese transports skuttled the fleet.

Third Lientenant Sasimari reacted to the Dai Viet invasion of Siam with balance of the Burmese army 45000 cavalry, 25000 infantry, 100 cataputs, and with 50 field forts. He faced the chancellor-general Du Vinh with 45000 elite cavalry, 55000, elite infantry, 250 elite catapults, and 100 elite cannons, plus a few extra goodies. In one fell swoop, the entire Burmese army was destroyed. Sasimari’s corpse was never found. The Dai Viet forces easily overwhelmed the city of Chantabun in an assault.

Dvarvati and the capitol in Mon fell just as easily to the Vietnamese.

The Burmese are no more.

After readjusting troop levels, the invasion of northern Burma began. General Tiger with 20,000 elite infantry, 200 cannons and mercenaries stormed Burma and successfully sieged the City of Pagan. Then continued relatively unapposed through Pegu and Thaton. It was just too easy.

It must have been a renewed devotion to the Mahayana faith that kept the republic together when Zhen Wu died. It’s a good thing his son Zhen Lao was around to take his place. Oops, Zhen Lao died too, but he had a son as well, how lucky can you get.

China

Mercs: 10mec, 10mei

The DAI VEIT GUO(t7)

The troops were elated when at long last they were call upon to do some real fighting. They were disappointed with the poor showing the Burmese gave of themselves. They didn’t know what hit them. Many in the Dai Viet army volenteered for the intellegence service, "That’s where the real action is!"

Quan Gui, Celestial Emperor of Chekiang

DIPLOMACY: no effect

Quan Bian kicked the bucket early in 1497. Deng Chubow will act as the regent for young Quan Gui. Will young Quan Gui make it to the age to be able to assume his empirical duties? Only time will tell.

"See, I told you."

Contact was made with representives of the former New World Catholic Mission.
