LORDS OF THE EARTH | |
CAMPAIGN IV | |
Turn #60 | Industrial Stage One |
1396-1400 Anno Domini | The Renaissance |
What's up?: MaxTax now at 2.05. Artillery: Just want ya'll to be aware of that little note in Table 3-1 of the Renaissance Rulebook... OPEN POSITIONS: If you're dropping, let me know ASAP. Most open positions are available First Come/First Served - except for truly juicy ones. TEMP POSITIONS: Several positions are available to play for free, on a temporary basis. If someone wants to pay to play them though, they'll get it from the temp player. No "right of first refusal" deals either - if you REALLY want to play it, pay up. Also, only simple orders will be accepted. If you're not paying, you don't get to confuse me or complain too much. GOLD AND INTEL BONUSES: I feel that my magic number system of Intel Bonuses is more than fair. There's nothing new here. This has been in my Rules Notes for a long time. Someone just spent an ungodly amount of gold in this game, so you all might as well know why his operations are being blabbed about in the fax. That doesn't mean that you won't get the bonuses (except in the case of a CF, were every bonus point you would have received cancels out one previously gained, depending on the CF circumstances), or that the operation won't succeed. It's just that everyone will know about it. You might not care if everyone knows that you know more about your neighbor than he does, especially if you have the power to snuff him in an instant anyway. AO/DAB/DIB: These ops are too harsh as written. Apparently, without having any knowledge of the inner workings of an opponent's intel network, you are able to destroy it, as if it's a house with the words INTEL BASE written on the front and you can just torch it. As of now, these actions require a fairly high level of infiltration in the organization you are intending to destroy. MULTIPLE ACTIONS: I'll have you know that, like the diplomacy action, I don't know of any action that will succeed if you try it a second (or more) times in the same turn. Multiple ST actions against the same treasury will fail. 4 YEAR TURNS: Next turn you'll see the effects of 4 year turns. 80% tax rate will be the norm. |
COLOR CODED NATION HEADERS: The Colors coded on each nation represents your technology level. Tech 1, 2, & 3, Tech 4, Tech 5, Tech 6, Tech 7, Tech 8, Tech 9, and Tech 10. If you can't read it, select the text so that it's reversed. LORDS 4 UNIT CONVERSION

The Tumet Horde
Khan Subutei
Diplomacy: For Weeenies!
Subutei felt that he needed more men to assault china with. So he high tailed it to the west. The Manchu, Naiman, Gobi, Hsia-Hsia, Gaxung-Nur, Bulingir, and Yumen hordes were all absorbed, while the Uigur allied. The Tumet now number over thirteen hundred units, er thousand men and horse.
The Alung-Gangri Horde
Gyanendra Khan
Diplomacy: None
Gyanendra headed north out of the Himalayas. The Astin horde allied with him. After that, it was quite dicey when both the Charchan and the Kucha, nearly active hordes themselves allied with Gyanendra. The horde pressed on up into the north, absorbing the Suachu, Jungaria, Altai, Tanu, Oriot, Telmen, Hovsgol, and finally the Yenisey with close to fifteen hundred units, er, thousand men and horse.
The Glorious Kingdom of Manchu
Timur, Emperor of Manchu, Explorer of the Northern Lands
Diplomacy: None
Timur emphasized the increased separation from the decadent Chinese, wishing the kingdom to be known henceforth as the Glorious Kingdom of Manchu. His appointed heir Chung Wang died in 1398. Two postal road projects were begun!
The Empire of Nippon
Takedasan, Shogun of Nippon
Diplomacy: None
Toyama's cultivation project completed and three new ones started. Taiwan became a full part of the Empire with the death of the ally.
The Jung-Mo Empire of Korea
Seong-Lee, Emperor of Korea, Protector of Northern China
Diplomacy: None
Seong-Lee did nothing but pay his loyal armies.
The Chin Chinese Empire
Chin Li, Emperor of the Middle Kingdom, Master of the World
Diplomacy: No good Effects
Tri Liang expanded Chiangning, Tonkin, Zhanjing, Daw-hni, and Canton as well as filling Lienwha with public baths and sports arenas. He marched the entire army of nearly thirty thousand men into Huang to talk. Spending such a small amount of time and not even offering the hand of his sister was too much for the proud people of Huang. They called out the guard. Tri Liang quickly crushed them into paying tribute. Then he marched down to Szechwan to be illin. He IL'ed himself to death! His younger brother Chu Jin also IL'ed himself to death.
Without opening the coffers of the treasury one smidgen, the heir and new Emperor Chin Li thought that his people would become more pious, restraint and all that. This is now a task best left to the Celestial Realm, who could be looking at a schism within the apathetic Chin.
The Celestial Realm of Buddha
Hung Lo-Chan, The Robed Wise Man
Consecration: None
Hung Lo-Chan contemplated his navel as his master before him.

The Khemer Empire of Kambuja
Tran Cau, Emperor of the Khemers, Cloak of the Buddha, Mask of Hidden Glory, Master of the Lotus Throne
Diplomacy: Preikuk(a) Mon(a)
Goupang was named heir to the throne when Tran Cau's wife died early in her pregnancy. Two massive cultivation projects were started in the north west of Khemer, otherwise, efforts were made to expand the Empire through diplomacy. Trade was severed with the Chola Mandalam. The port of Tun Son Nha fully joined the empire when the ruling family died without an heir.
The Khemer Empire of Burma
Dinth Shan the True, Emperor of the Khemers
Diplomacy: Padishan(fa) Gtsang(c)
Dinth Shan declared that the Empire of Burma is now a tributary to the Chola Mandalam and sent off a token amount of gold. His son Samnang was eaten by river sharks in 1398 while vacationing along the Irrawaddy. Admiral Arun took the royal navy to patrol, especially staying on the lookout for pirates and raiders.
The Island Kingdom of Java
Adrissa III, King of Java, Master of the Spice Isles
Diplomacy: Matara(a)
Adrissa disbanded more than half of the army, putting them to work in the fields working on intense cultivation projects in the homeland and Kediri. Subversion techniques were successful as Kanti joined the Island Kingdom as an ally.

The Indian Ocean Basin

The Chola Mandalam Empire
Abhata, Chola Emperor of Mandalam, the Left hand of Vishnu
Diplomacy: Singapore City(H) Maldives(F-To Java) Karnata(nt)
Abhata poured vast amounts of money into investments and nearly all of them paid off, including all of his new renaissance ratings. He was ecstatic. Twelve cities were expanded, a couple of them had walls built on them even, sorta like caps. The un charismatic man attempted to re-equip his troops to heavy class, but failed miserably.
Merutunga tripped (some say he was pushed) on the steps of city hall in Singapore where he had been goofing off for nearly 4 and a half years before sitting down at the table for talks with the nobility, who didn't speak the same language anyway.
Massive amounts of gold were spent on a booby trap for any intel operations that the Merchants of El'iskandria may have conducted, flooding the Islamic world with Chola Abhatans.* Infiltrations on the other hand were easily gained, as most people LOVE Cholan gold and love showing it off to everyone they know and where they got it. The Merchants refused the 300 gold incentive to return to Tanjore. Abhata's advisors mused that for one third that amount, another merchant house could be commissioned out of any city in the Empire, but Abhata was adamant, and had a few of them beheaded for their impertinence.
The Empire sponsored several missions to Prome, Assam, Gtsang, and Bhutan. Trade was cut with Khemer, Egypt, and any ships flying the flag of the Merchants of El'iskandria.
*Note: An Abhatan is a common Chola gold coin. Most of the Orient uses this as the coin of choice, sometimes, like in the case of Burma, merchants prefer an Abhatan to a coin minted by their own treasury.
The Hindu Primacy
Niraj Pdesh, Blessed by the One's whom follow the path
Consecration: Kalanjara(ch) Lahore(ch) Amritsat(ch) Suratjat(ch) Jakhau(ch) Somantha(ch) Sorat(ab) Nasik(ch) Banavasi(ab) Chera(ab) Soerabaya(ch) Palas(ca)
Niraj acted on information gained in previous years by searching for government infiltrations. He discovered definitively that his earlier reports must have been in error as no infiltration was discovered. The services of Victor "the Cleaner" weren't needed after all.
The Empire of Sirinigar
Kailash Vish, Emperor of Sirinigar
Diplomacy: Suratjat(t)
Pingu increased the size of all of his cities and expanded public works around the realm. Then in 1399 he died. A rising star in the ranks of the military by the name of Kailash Vish successfully claimed the Jainist throne of Sirinigar.

The Mid East

The Kyzl-Kom Horde
Khan Atanur Kzyn
Diplomacy: Khazakh Horde(a) Urkel Horde(a) Tarhain Horde(absorbed)
Atanur Kzyn rode with his men south into the territory of the Khazakh to find support and to meet up with representatives from the Imam Hazim. The caravan of religious men didn't show up as promised, something about an inability to find suitable transport. So Mullah El Kabob administered to the tribes, bringing gold as well as investments in siege technology. Atanur then crossed the Ural to join with the mighty Urkel tribes. The horde was last heard from absorbing the Tarhain tribes and finding the Palavoi latent Near the fur line, with close to ninety thousand men, the Kyzl-Kom found many wild beasts to feast upon.
The Emirate of Turkman
Abdul, Shah of Bukhara, Emir of Merv
Diplomacy: Dusbane(t) Kush(f)
Abdul expanded several cities in the Emirate as well as adding to the cultivation projects in Kuldja and Uzebek. The wedding to the princess of Dusbane was a festive occasion.
The Khanate of Scythia
Henuz ar Samir, Khan of the Scythians, Lord of Afghanistan
Diplomacy: Firoz Kohi(F)
Henuz sent Sharit to head up the delegation to bring Firoz Kohi back into the realm. Next the delegations will target the southern rebels. Just a little bit of money and man power is all that's needed to complete the royal road projects into Tabaristan.
The Holy Imam of All Islam
Imam Mohamad ar-Rhani, The Holy Imam of all Islam, the Highest Follower of Al'lah, Beloved of Scythia
Diplomacy: None
Consecration: None
The holy army of Islam was turned over to the Imam upon his return in 1397. He closed The Great All Islam Conference of Tabriz, asking the delegates to go home and return in 3 years with the will of the umma. Each nation is being asked to vote on the final direction of Islam. The choice is to vote WITH the Imam (pro-Shi'a), or AGAINST the Imam (Pro-Sunni). The number of votes are listed below, next to each nation:
The Safavid Empire of Basra
Nuh'a-Din ibn Nur, Shah of Baghdad, Spokesman of God, Chosen of Allah, Guide of the Faithful, Most Learned of the Holy
Diplomacy: Damascus(t) Hamadan(t)
Nuh'a-Din expanded most of the cities on the Persian Gulf, including the desert city of Islamabad, knowing it's importance as a trade port. Then he rode at the head of his army more than ten thousand strong along the royal roads into Syria where he attacked mercilessly, obviously intent on reconnecting to the valuable trade route with the Mamluke. Back in the capital, Sulih's efforts were a counterpoint to Bazzan's.
The Madragian Emirate of Aleppo
Aga Ali Turrela, Emir of Aleppo, Servant of Allah, Guardian of the Western March, Regent of al-Salud
Diplomacy: None
Abu B'akar died in 1399 so Aga Ali Turrela took up the regency for little Al-Salud now 13 years old. The Mamluk's recent subsidy program was suspended due to a lack of communication about the transfer arrangements.
The Mamluke Sultanate of Egypt
Uzayr, Sultan of Egypt, Ruler of the Upper and Lower Nile, Defender of the Holy Land, Master of the Seven Seas, Sword of Allah, Invincible Overlord of the Mamluke Empire
Diplomacy: Tangier(f) Nubia(fa)
Uzayr granted the Merchant Jamil two monopolies, namely cotton exports in Faiyum as well as dates. They were granted massive leeway in matters such as the defenses of El'Iskandria and the use of the University. Trade was cut with the Chola Mandalam, the ships transferred to the Merchant. The Imam poured resources into the repair of the Grand Mosque.
The Aswan Locks project was begun in 1396. The largest construction the Mamluke Emirate has ever attempted. Allowing shipping to move into the Upper Nile beyond Nubia. Gold and technical support came from the Byzantine Emperor.
Sheik Ali ibn Omar had no luck in the bedroom and at 45 years old, the heir to the Mamluke throne felt desperate. This led to feelings of inadequacy that he was only able to quell by pouring himself into the work of ruling the Emirate.
The Merchant of El'Iskandria
Jamil al Haysin, Merchant of El'Iskandria
Capitalization: Corinth(ma) Mesolongi(ma) Mahidia(ma) Madiera(ma)
Jamil received slaves from the Egyptians, with which he attempted to build transports with. Putting them to work building walls, or roads or something is ok, but not to crew his transports. So they were shuffled off to work on a government project instead. Jamil sent tech advisors to Egypt, but was unable to explain some of his technical superiority to the Imam. He considered his good fortune when his own advisors told him about their advances in artillery. He personally met the rich lords of the Eastern Empire who were eager to sign contracts.
The Sultanate of Sheba
Waliyudeen Mutlaq, Sultan of Sheba, Patriarch of Islam
Diplomacy: None
The Sultan marched up the coast to attack his feudal ally in Zufar. Superior skill on the battlefield and Amr was off to do the same in Muscat. If Oman were pacified as well, trade could be conducted out of Masqat. It might be cheaper than royal roads through non-paying tributary deserts... He died in 1398.
The Coptic Kingdom of Aksum
Tobin VI, King of Aksum, Negus Negesti, Lord of the Coptic Wilderness, Lioness of Judah
Diplomacy: Charuls(f)
Tobin VI finished the cultivation projects of Sidamo and Kassala as well as completing the repair work on the Gezira/Sennar bridge. A new royal road was sent south of the newly rebuilt city of Tutsu in Gezira. More public works were spread around while BurSudan and Wasan were expanded. The expansion of BurSudan included the addition of a port fortress on the Red Sea.
Angcur was just as incapable at bringing new children into the world as his Egyptian counterpart. He remarried and kept trying to produce an heir. After two of his wives died Angcur developed a nasty nickname among the peasantry. His third wife in five years gave him another daughter in 1399, but then died in 1400.
A grand ball was held after Princess Lillian married Atri, the king of Buganda, now a full part of the republic. Tobin VI announced that the Merchants of El'Iskandria would be allowed to build their offices in Aksum, as long as it would not cut into his income. Considering the fact that this is impossible, without some form of kick-back from the Merchant, it remains to be seen if they'll take him up on his magnanimous offer.
Slander in the street implies that Tobin VI is not a faithful Coptic Lord...
The Coptic Prelate
Arch Prelate Zardoz the First, Shepard of the Flock, Lord of Hosts,
Keeper of the Holy Relic
Consecration: None
Zardoz died in 1397. Without the support of his flock, the Coptic church folded up.

Vizier Djohar visited Pemba with the Pride of Tarbyr, the new flagship of the fleet. He was killed in a storm that hit the islands in 1397. Shirazi died in the same storm while trying to tie down the ships to the dock. Hussain stepped forward to rule the Kingdom until Shirazi's son reaches his majority.
The Kingdom of Great Zimbabwe
Ayize, King of Sofala, Master of the City of Round Towers

The Republic of Venice
Marco I, Doge of New Venice

The Kingdom of the Kongo
Umbono Puto, Tallest of the Tall, The Big Man, Stomper of Little People
Diplomacy: Kang(t)
Umbono converted his government to Centralized Monarchy when he expanded his infrastructure. He personally conducted the census and then ruled his domains. The port city of Tsenda was built in Teke so that trade could begin with his neighbors to the north.
Anjabu Minunge married a Kang woman and knew that, as Prince, he would be next in line should Umbono not be able to sire an heir.

Akanosh of the Jaguar Tribe
Diplomacy: None
Akanish looked forward to trading with his neighbors.
The Kanem-Bornu Confederation
Ali al Uthmani II, Supreme Chief of the KBC

The Arguin Directorate of Ghana
Orin Ghasim, Arguin Director of Ghana, Protector of Kumbi-Salem, Conqueror of Timbuktu
Diplomacy: Khalem(nt) Boure(c) Segu(nt)
Director Ghasim ruled his fractured nation, while sending his men out to diplomatically encourage the rebels to come back into the fold. He pronounced that, should he die, Toliver should be the new Director. The younger more charismatic Eli and Bwian felt they'd have something to say about that when the time comes. Never-the-less, Toliver started working on a new royal line, with a daughter in 1396, his wife dieing soon after the birth of their son in 1398.
The rebels of Betif continued to hamper trade and Ghasim found that the royal roads were damaged while under the rebels' control, and he feared the same situation would be found in Gorouol and Zerma.
The Almohad Emirate of Morocco
Astaba ibn Sayid, Emir of Morocco
Diplomacy: Adrar(nt)
Astaba discovered that all trade links to his Imam had been severed. Luckily the Imam had recently built a church in one of his eastern provinces, so he could share tech. Al'Hauts stopped paying taxes.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
EUROPE
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The Kingdom of Andalusia
Christopher II, King of Aragon
Diplomacy: None
Christopher was wounded by a masked assailant early in 1396. It didn't take long to figure out who was behind the murder attempt...
The Empire of Aragon
Henry III the Infirm, King of Castille, Emperor of Aragon, Restorer of the Faith
Diplomacy: C
Henry sent missionaries to Salamanca. Unlike previous successful attempts to convert the heathens, Henry did not send along resources to support the missionaries in any form. It's no surprise that the native culture reasserted itself. Henry told all of his merchants to fish and allowed the Merchants of El'iskandria to set up offices anywhere in the Empire except for Saragossa or Aragon itself. His cousin-in-law Don Sanchez died before his administrating could take effect, so the Empire was held together through assistance from the Pope and Henry's hard work.
While reading some of the journals of his late wife, Henry discovered that she had three aunts who where now nuns in Rome. He wrote to the Pope to have the youngest one sent to him, so that he could marry and continue to produce children in the line of Catherine's or something like that. The Pope did not reply.
Undaunted, Henry built up cavalry for his Galacia and Valencian allies, and a couple thousand heavy cavalry for Don Dantae to attack his ancient foe Christopher. Asok II, a veteran of this civil war took waited for the Valencians and then crossed the Guadal river in the summer of 1396 with seven thousand men. Christopher had nearly no defenses, trusting in diplomacy and the support of the Pope, which never came. Andalusia was easily taken within the year and then the city of Seville was stormed, since it had no walls to speak of. Don Amistad was unable to effectively blockade the city with his 4 ships; it's unknown which merchant ship secreted Christopher and the bulk of the Andalusian treasury out of Seville before Asok took over.
Don Dantae and the Galacians pacified Portugal and Estremadura later in the year, meeting up with Asok in 1397. The celebrations lasted for weeks since Henry had set aside bonus pay for his armies. Asok died in 1398 finally seeing the empire whole.
The Roman Catholic Church
Boniface IX, Bishop of Rome, Pontiff of the Apostolic & Reformist Catholic Church, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Servant of the Servants of God
Consecration: Tuscany(mn) Florence(mn) Provence(mn)
Boniface IX expanded St. Peter's Cathedral by adding to the grounds and surrounding buildings. He felt that this would help him increase the spread of the works of God. Bishop Godfrey and Bishop Thomas returned from Britannia, the church's influence there gone.
The Pope misread the message from Aragon and assumed that Henry wanted to have his late wife's youngest niece sent to Henry. Boniface sent a messenger to locate a niece of Catherine's along with his blessings on the union. The messenger, finding that Catherine had no sisters nor brothers, and thus no nieces or nephews returned to the Pope with the sad news.
A suspicious greek man was taken prisoner in Naples.
The Empire of Greater Britannia
Geoffery I, Emperor of Greater Britannia, Grand Duke of Flanders, Keeper of the Irish Talisman of Faith

Geoffery was sad to see his Bishops leave. The Earl of Limousine died in 1399 after dragging the Empire's marines home to Paris.
The Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation
Henry II, King of Bavaria, Kaiser of the German Reich, Roman Emperor of the West
Diplomacy: Spoleto(nt)
Margarethe expanded 20 cities in the Empire, choosing to let the walls rot, and sent Count Abernathey to Spoleto. In Alsace, she grudgingly agreed to step down to let her son Henry II rule the Empire. In his first steps as Emperor, he sent small armies out with instructions to his generals to Garrison the rebellious regions and cities. Count Jura in Verona sat outside the walls of St. Petersburg wondering why the Emperor sent him with only a thousand men, half of which were cavalry. Similar thoughts entered the head of Count Prien when he arrived at Genoa with barely more troops than he knew occupied the large city. He died later that year, his replacement didn't have a problem moving back to Savoy to await additional instructions. Baron Marcus had instructions to garrison Latium. He also remained at his station.
