LORDS OF THE EARTH
CAMPAIGN IV
Turn #59 Industrial Stage One
1391-1395 Anno Domini The Renaissance
Gamemaster: David Adams
Next Turn's Orders are due Sunday, March 3rd, 2002
ANNOUNCEMENTS

Bill did it!: Congratulations! We are now in the Renaissance. Go get your Renaissance rules.

What's up?: MaxTax now at 2.15.

Builds before existance: If a region isn't on your stat sheet at nt or better, you aren't allowed to build in it. From here on out, if you try it you'd either better have a large army to protect your resources, or expect them to be taken greedily by the natives. Same thing with Trade routes - stuff can't be transferred over a trade route that isn't on your stat sheet. Opening one isn't the same thing.

Primate Status: Primates are not allowed to hold a region at Feudal Allied nor Allied. If successful diplomacy indicates Allied (a) the results will slip back to Economic Ally (ea). 2.2.4.11

Technology Transfer: 10.11.3 - New rules! Check them out.

OPEN POSITIONS: If you're dropping, let me know ASAP. There will be a lottery February 18th if you are interested in any of the open positions.

4 YEAR TURNS: Lords 4 will switch to 4 year turns after turn 60 (1400 AD).

COLOR CODED NATION HEADERS: The Colors coded on each nation represents your technology level. Tech 1, 2, & 3, Tech 4, Tech 5, Tech 6, Tech 7, Tech 8, Tech 9, and Tech 10. If you can't read it, select the text so that it's reversed.

    The Kingdom of Bei Song
Timur, Emperor of the Bei Song, Explorer of the Northern Lands
    Diplomacy: None
Timur sent his men to the borders to watch and defend. He also opened trade with the Nihon.

    The Empire of Nippon
    Takedasan, Shogun of Nippon
    Diplomacy: Saga(t)
Takedasan started the regional cultivation projects in Toyama, expanded Heian, and built Tatsuo in Kagoshima. In Kagoshima, Takeda Yabu had to do some extremely fast talking to explain why the Empire would just assume that they had permission to build a port city. The building of public works in the region was not allowed. In the end, he and his resources were abruptly shown to the border where he died. He told Kichiro before he died that the region would have been tributary if it weren't for Takedasan's haste.
Raiders sailed in the Choson Mon, apparently from the north. They successfully hit Koguryo, then into the Dozen Wan where they hit Yamato itself. Here Takedasan repulsed the pirates. Finally the raiders hit Cheju Do. They were last seen heading into the Korea Hai...

    The Tumet Horde
    Khan Subutei
    Diplomacy: For Weeenies!
Subutei decided it was time to drive the knife deep into his ancient foes. He crossed the border into Liao-Tung, then into Luan where he met Jung-Mo. Jung-Mo had just arrived in the province so he was unable to set up anymore than a hasty defense. This was enough as his tactical mind and close to 4000-man field fortifications drove Subutei from the realm. This was to be Jung-Mo's last hurrah, for as his scouts were pursuing the horde from the land Seong-Lee was readying the litter to carry his liege to the capital...

    The Jung-Mo Empire of Korea
Seong-Lee, Emperor of Korea, Protector of Northern China
    Diplomacy: Hopei(H)
Jung-Mo died before Seong-Lee could get him to the capital. Kyo-Hah's mission was to bring Hopei into the empire. When he heard that Jung-Mo had died, he would have rebelled and attempt to stake his claim on the throne, but at the time he was a captor in a dark lonely Kaifeng prison. He died later that year.
In the aftermath of the transition to Seong-Lee's administration, several cities without walls in the outlying areas were overran, Inchon, Galedon, Pusan, and the formerly pacified region of Yen and Yen-Ching.

    The Chin Chinese Empire
Tri Liang, Emperor of the Middle Kingdom, Master of the World
    Diplomacy: None
Tri Liang expanded Chang'Ling and Chiangning, both of which enclosed the port fortresses. Field fortifications nearly as large as Jung-Mo's in Lu'an were built across the countryside at critical locations. Then the waiting began. Within the year news reports of the repulsion in the North-East filtered through to ChinLi who was ruling at the time in Chingling. Condolences were sent to Seong-Lee for Jung-Mo's courageous passing.
In other news, Shih Huang, the bumbling administrator found himself walking through the grounds of the Imperial Palace just as some workers were lifting a brand new Acme Heavy SaveTM using a winch-and-rope system. Whistling a popular tune to himself, it was too late when he realized that the rope broke above him. The dumbfounded look on his upturned face was priceless.
The effects of Shih Huang would be felt for years to come as Fukien, Kiang'Si, and Kwangsi degraded in status, while Tai'Li in Nanchao revolted altogether.

    The Celestial Realm of Buddha
Hung Feng-Chan, The Robed Wise Man
    Consecration: None
Hung Feng-Chan contemplated his navel in depth.

    The Khemer Empire of Kambuja
Tran Cau, Emperor of the Khemers, Cloak of the Buddha, Mask of Hidden Glory, Master of the Lotus Throne
    Diplomacy: Preikuk(t) Kedah(F)
Tran expanded Angkor Wat again and placed regional improvements in key locations as well as fortifications. In an effort to make the empire more like a police state, elite police units were placed in all of the cities. Tran attempted to boost the religious sector as well, but wound up having an adverse effect. Petitions to the Celestial Realm will be forthcoming. Tran set his diplomats on fire once again to get a little bit more productivity out of them.
Talking about fire, terrorists struck the small village of Paga early on in 1391 wiping out the city's small market place in a blaze. Later on in 1392 raiders struck Mon, but the massive field fortifications drove them off, managing to kill several of the blackards.

    The Khemer Empire of Burma
Dinth Shan the True, Emperor of the Khemers
    Diplomacy: Prome(A) Assam(t) Padishan(c)
Dinth put walls on most of his cities and expanded Chittagong again. He put his son Samnang on the job of setting up proper taxes on head count in the nation. Not only was Samnang successful at that, but after taking a wife from the nobility an heir was born in 1391. At the end of that year raiders hit Pegu, making off like bandits.

    The Island Kingdom of Java
Adrissa III, King of Java, Master of the Spice Isles
    Diplomacy: Chengtu(t) Matara(c)
Once again, without the assistance of anyone, the Javans moved closer to their Hindu gods. Adrissa expanded the three largest cities in the realm and had a couple kids. This was a good thing because in 1393 his brother and heir, Suharto died.
In 1393 pirates sailed into the Selat Strait apparently fresh from raids up north. They set upon raiding Pajajaran, Adrissa's home! Adrissa sailed around the strait to not only sink the pirate fleet with his elite heavies with marines, but capture the pirate captain, a WOMAN called Kanti by her men. Unfortunately any booty the pirates would have had, besides Kanti's, sunk with their fleet.

    The Chola Mandalam Empire
Abhata, Chola Emperor of Mandalam, the Left hand of Vishnu
    Diplomacy: Singapore(t) Kakatiya(f) Pawar(f)
Abhata sent his agents into Surat to root out any form of organized government besides his own. He personally interrogated some aged old men who vaguely remembered the exploits of Sidhartha, but when led to the dens and meeting halls, all they found was empty rooms and dust.
Several more cities expanded, raising the industrial output of the Empire to unprecedented levels. Public works in Kakatiya as well as a new royal road. Workers were sent off to build a road through the walls at Uttar Pradesh to Chitor. And to back it all up, another ten thousand heavy horse under Abhata's personal command.
Fundamental shifts in the Empire's culture began to make their way throughout the region when researchers in Tanjore discovered a way to harness the power of ancient chinese fireworks to fire lead at high velocities. Abhata jumped all over that and immediately stated that he would throw huge sums of gold into further research as well as training new regiments to make use of his new discoveries.
In the west, the cultural shifts were made apparent when merchants took knowledge gained at the university along with some funding from ecclesiastic agents further west....

    The Hindu Primacy
Niraj Pdesh, Blessed by the One's whom follow the path
    Consecration: Rajput(ab) Jaunpor(mn) Varanasi(ch) Nadavaria(ab) Palas(mn) Samatata(ch) Chittagong(ab) Ava(ch) Paghan(ab) Pegu(ch) Bassein(ch) Sagaing(ch) Kyongia(ch)
Niraj failed to increase the influence of the Primacy over the Javans. Quite the opposite in fact with the Chola, where bribes and gifts seem to do the trick quite handsomely. Bribes and gifts propped up the apathetic Hindus in Burma as well. To fund all this Niraj personally set an 8% tithe on the Chola Empire. He feels that the high fanaticism will quell any fears of revolts.
Thorin died in 1391 before he could move on any of the consecrations he had planned. Oin led the funeral procession for his dear old friend.

    The Kingdom of Sirinigar
    Pingu Singh, King of Sirinigar
    Diplomacy: Jats(fa)
Pingu increased the size of all of his cities, replacing the walls at the same time. He wasn't too surprised when Mysore spontaneously converted to Hinduism.

    The Mid East

    The Kyzl-Kom Horde
    Khan Kzyn
    Diplomacy: Turgay Horde(a) Khirgiz Horde(a) Kazan Horde(a)
Kzyn took his men north to find great support for his causes...

    The Emirate of Turkman
Abdul, Shah of Bukhara, Emir of Merv
    Diplomacy: Samarkand(f) Uzebek(f) Kush(c)
Yasir died in 1392, marring the diplomatic mission in Kush. Otherwise things were fairly quiet in the Emirate. Omar build up a quick ten thousand man force to act as his body guard. They could not stop the ferryman who came to call on Omar in 1393. Abdul rode in from Uzebek to become the new Shah of Bukhara, establishing the Constitutional Monarchy that the rebellions in the previous years had demanded.

    The Khanate of Scythia
Henuz ar Samir, Khan of the Scythians, Lord of Afghanistan
    Diplomacy: None
Samir sat paralyzed in his palace, not sure what to do besides horde all his gold and pay the bills. He died in 1394, leaving the young Henuz on the throne.

The Holy Imam of All Islam
Imam Hazim, The Holy Imam of all Islam, the Highest Follower of Al'lah
    Diplomacy: Georgia(nt) Shirvan(t) Kurdistan(H)
    Consecration: Antioch(ab) Cyrne(ch)
The Imam opened "The Great All Islam Conference of Tabriz" addressing the prospects for the unification of Shiite and Sunni Muslim sects. Religious scholars and teachers from throughout the Islamic world were invited to attend and discuss those questions of differing doctrine and practice that remain unresolved. The Imam himself will remained aloof from the daily proceedings to allow the scholars a freer hand to resolve their differences and formulate their recommendations. But he was kept informed of developments through his clerical corps of advisors assigned to oversee the work of the committees. The procedures called for the expeditious resolution of those controversies that are less intractable first, saving the tougher issues for later in the conference. If the work of unification is not completed in this pentacade, then an interim report will be issued, and the conference will be extended for another cycle.
Prospects are good that most matters of doctrine and practice relating to religious law can be resolved in a swift and timely fashion due to the fact that both Sunni and Shiite sects recognize the authority of the Sharia law and follow very similar teachings with respect to its interpretation. The more difficult issues will revolve around church structure. The Sunni-Shiite schism originally occurred over the issue of who should properly succeed The Prophet Mohammed: a committee of his closest associates, or the closest blood relative his nephew Ali (Shiite means "the party of Ali"). In the events immediately following the death of The Prophet, the original leadership of both camps were lost, with Ali the leader of the Shiites being killed in battle, and the group of Mohamed's associates fragmenting into several different Sunni factions in the time of the rival Caliphs. The real question dividing Islam throughout much of Muslim history has centered not on spiritual doctrine or ritual practices, but on this political issue of how to organize a centralized church structure when so many rival political factions feel entitled to lead.
Counter-balancing to some extent this fractionalized history of Islam's first three centuries, is the history of the more recent three centuries, a period in which all Muslims regardless of sectarian allegiance have had to repeatedly band together to beat back various incursions by both Christians and infidel barbarians. Against this background, the institution of the Imamate and the person of the Imam (traditionally a Shiite leader) have risen up from relative obscurity, and come to be the de facto spiritual leadership of all Islam. A number of conflicting historical claims remain outstanding, but these controversies tend to center on which historical figure was the rightful leader of Islam six hundred years ago, and which other historic leader was the impostor of his era.
The real work of this conference will be to piece together a consensus that recognizes the de facto spiritual leadership of the Imam as the just and true leader of all the faithful in this time after the era of rival claimants.
A fairly uncharismatic Mullah Bakhar was killed in Armenia by Eastern Orthodox fanatics. Mullah Khataan died in 1392 part way into his diplomatic mission in Shirvan. He was scheduled to conduct diplomacy in the mountains of Kurdistan later that year. His silver tongue would have helped smooth out the folly that was the Imam's idea to set up fortifications without Kurdistani permission.
In 1393 Imam Khemeni died at the age of 67. It was assumed that he was just dozing, when in fact the Conference had actually bored him to death. Mullah Hazim was recalled from his missions in the East to become the new Imam.

    The Safavid Empire of Basra
Nuh'a-Din ibn Nur, Shah of Baghdad, Spokesman of God, Chosen of Allah, Guide of the Faithful, Most Learned of the Holy
    Diplomacy: Hamadan(nt)
Nuh'a-Din collected up some cavalry from the garrison at Bagdad and along with his trusted general Asalih and an additional twelve thousand men, rode through the canyons of the Kabír Kúh to crush the rebelious people of Media. He went on to conduct diplomacy with the city of Hamadan. Ahmat successfully officiated the census before dieing in 1394.

    The Madragian Emirate of Aleppo
Abu B'akar, Emir of Aleppo, Servant of Allah, Guardian of the Western March, Regent of al-Salud
    Diplomacy: Cyprus(a) Sancelade(fa)
Salud al-Hajj once again expanded Antioch and Hassanchop, blowing out the walls in the process. He had another boy in 1391 before his wife died in 1392. Expecting gold from the Imam, Salud was surprised when it actually came from Egypt. He spent it all on regional public works in the wilderness of Edessa. Salud died in 1395 so Abu B'akar took up the regency for little Al-Salud. Pamphyla revolted.

    The Mamluke Sultanate of Egypt
Uzayr, Sultan of Egypt, Ruler of the Upper and Lower Nile, Defender of the Holy Land, Master of the Seven Seas, Sword of Allah, Invincible Overlord of the Mamluke Empire
    Diplomacy: Ceuta(f)
Uzayr shared technology with the Imam, but was unsuccessful at sharing with the Kanem-Bornu tribes, even though he initiated trade across the great sand sea. Aqaba was expanded and at the end of 1395, Uzayr was pleasantly surprised to find merchants setting up shop in the great port of El'Iskandria beyond the great walls of Egypt. In attempting to raise his own religious strength on his own, with no incentives or gifts to his people, Uzayr only managed to reduce it. Taxes were reduced since the Imam did not reduce the tithe that was expected from the Sultanate.

    The Merchant of El'Iskandria
    Malmhud, Merchant of El'Iskandria
    Diplomacy: None
Swayed by sweet words, merchants from India set up shop in the prime real estate of El'Iskandria.

    The Sultanate of Sheba
Amr, Sultan of Sheba, Patriarch of Islam
    Diplomacy: Berbera(f) Hadramuht(c)
The Sultan attempted to increase the piety of the nobility yet again. Thus the tithe weighed heavy on his poor nation of apathetic peoples. Amr build Zunigo, a new port in Hadramuht and set up several new trade routes and merchant fleets.

    The Coptic Kingdom of Aksum
Tobin VI, King of Aksum, Negus Negesti, Lord of the Coptic Wilderness, Lion of Judah
    Diplomacy: Charuls(A) Susa(F)
Tobin VI finished the cultivation projects of Gamo-Gafa & Ilubabor, and moved Sidamo's nearer to completion. Projects were initiated in Lalibela, Kosti, Kobowen, Kassala, Harar, and Ain Farah. An earthquake crumbled the city of Tutsu in Gezira as well as the bridge to Sennar in 1394. A couple cities expanded and all of the nation's urban areas were improved.

    The Coptic Prelate
Arch Prelate Zardoz the First, Shepard of the Flock, Lord of Hosts, Keeper of the Holy Relic
    Consecration: None
Zardoz was dismayed at the lack of devotion that Tobin portrayed, So he withdrew the government support.

    The Kingdom of Great Zimbabwe
Ayize, King of Sofala, Master of the City of Round Towers
    Diplomacy: Luba(no effect)
Queen Thuwa died in 1393, two years before Ayize would take the throne. Trusty old Choktale had died just a few months earlier. Gezu Gei administrated in the Round Towers, or at least pretended to until Ayize reached his majority. Finally, the royal road project from the capital to the newly rebuilt city of Pebane was completed.
The death of Queen Thuwa squashed any chances the Chief of Kilwa would have had in Luba after Choktale's death.

    The Republic of Venice
Marco I, Doge of New Venice
    Diplomacy: None
Marco expanded Phalaborwa and discovered where his cavalry had been hiding. Romeo was quite successful in Xhosa converting the nobility to Christianity.

    Diplomacy: None
         Umbono considered his options carefully.

    The Kanem-Bornu Confederation
Ali al Uthmani II, Supreme Chief of the KBC
    Diplomacy: No effect
The Chief of the KBC hunted a wife with a bastard son to claim as his new heir.
Ali felt the tremors late in the afternoon of 1394 from the palace at Ngazargumo. When the shaking subsided he knew in the pit of his stomach that many lives had been lost. The royal roads to Sokoro and Soro were heavily damaged, luckily the crews in Daza were able to build around the new fissures that had pushed the road 30 yards to the north. Kanuri and Sokoro completed the decade long agricultural undertakings.
Although a successful census taker, Amida II proved to be a less-than-capable administrator.

    The Arguin Directorate of Ghana
Masak ibn Alekr, Arguin Director of Ghana, Protector of Kumbi-Salem, Conqueror of Timbuktu
    Diplomacy: Zerma(AW)
Masak ibn Alekr died in 1393. It was at this point that his decision to name Ghasim heir was put to the test. Diplomat Toby was eliminated in Takrur when it became apparent where his loyalties lay. Ahab, administrating alongside Ghasim, attempted to wrest control of the Directorate, but was snuffed in the end. Adawara, Adwaghost, Khalem, Boure, Segu and Gorouol revolted. The revolutionaries worked without any direct leadership to disrupt trade with most of the Arguin Directorate. Omar was wounded in Zerma.

    The Almohad Emirate of Morocco
Astaba ibn Sayid, Emir of Morocco
    Diplomacy: None
Astaba ibn Sayid shared his technologies with his Imam then stayed home to raise his family. All kinds of things were built around the Emirate, a postal road to Misratah, urban works, the expansion of Oudga, Fez, Mahidia, and Algiers, including walls around the later. Farosh Alim died at the age of 70 at his post in Sicily. His replacement was called up from his troops.

    Diplomacy: Castile(f) Catalonia(f) Navarre(f) Valencia(a)
Catherine requested the return of a couple of her Aunts from the care of Boniface. He graciously granted her request and they were promptly wedded to Don Sanchez of Catalonia and Don Dantae of Navarre, elevating both of them to Princes and their small kingdoms full parts of the greater Kingdom of Aragon. Catherine herself was just as busy, wedding Enrique of Old Castille. She immediately took it upon herself to follow in her mother's footsteps by having a daughter late in 1391. In 1392 she died during the miscarriage of her second daughter. Enrique was crowned King Henry III Emperor of Aragon.
Saragossa and Madiera were both expanded and the port city of San Sebastian was built in Asturias. Plans to build the port city of Tarragona in Valencia were shelved due to an administrative mix up where more gold was needed in Saragossa and Madiera.

    Consecration: Calabria(ch) Spoleto(ch)
Boniface IX expanded his guard by more than eight thousand elite heavy cavalry.
Waves of Humanist thought spread throughout the Church, emanating from the recently independent Italian provinces. This, combined with Boniface's feeble efforts to increase the strength of the reforms, led to the failure of several of his plans.

    The Empire of Greater Britannia
Geoffery I, Emperor of Greater Britannia, Grand Duke of Flanders, Keeper of the Irish Talisman of Faith
    Diplomacy: None
Richard repaired Notre Dame in 1392. He died later in 1394 to be laid to rest in the mausoleum there. His 20 year old son Geoffery took on the duties as Emperor of Greater Britannia. The Varangian Empire of Russia
Ivan II, Tsar of all the Russias, Kniaz of Vlatim
    Diplomacy: Daugava(t) Latvia(t)
Russian scholars were turned away from the HRE borders because their papers were suspect. Lord Gunther joined Simon and most of the mercenaries in Europe to go gallivanting around the Russian countryside. Starting in Atelzuko with about twelve thousand men. It was taken easily along with wall-less Odessa. From there the army hit Pechneg, but met a much more savvy defense, meaning that actual casualties were felt by the mercenaries. Varna was easily taken as well. The army, with sappers in tow, marched through Goryn, Volhynia and finally into Bialoweza, just to the east of Poland at the end of 1395.

    Kingdom of Poland
    John the Peacemaker
    Diplomacy: None
Wladeslaw died in 1391 after the tremendous beating that the Murom Horde gave him. His son John took the throne and opened negotiations with the remaining Murom tribes. The influx of people increased the size of all of John's cities. [See Murom Horde]

Radu I, Khan of the Avars, Lord of the Steppe

    The Murom Horde
Arslan, Khan of the Murom, Lord of the Steppe
    Diplomacy: None

    The Byzantine Empire
Basil III, Eastern Roman Emperor, Master of the Scholae
    Diplomacy: Bosnia(fa) Pontus(ea) Lydia(a)
Tried and true methods continue to prove that Basil III knows what he's doing. He had no less than 5 more children, bringing his total to 12. At 40 years old, he shows no signs of stopping. Not to be outdone by his dad, Justinian had 4 more children as well. Constantinople, Corinth, Mesolongi, and Volos were expanded while royal roads projected into Macedon and Lydia.
The mountains of paperwork grew with a decade of feudal holdings in the Empire.

The White Order of Saint Demetrius
Simon von Seeckt, Grand Master of the White Order
    Diplomacy: No Effect
Several crates were left on the docks addressed to Simon von Seeckt from the Roman Empire unattended. They disappeared shortly thereafter.
In the backwaters of the wild Volgas, mid-wifery is not as advanced as the shining city of Constantinople, and so it was with sadness that 65 year old Rumitsav might end his life with no children to bear the name von Seeckt. An unnamed leader was supposed to head off to lead talks with Atelzuko, but he died. Considering the actions of the Rus, in hindsight perhaps this is for the best.
Eremenko brought eight hundred men to Rumitsav.

    Horde Politics:

The Alung-Gangri Horde grew weary of the monastic life in the high deserts north of the Himalayas and decided to move out with close to thirty thousand horses.
